An Islamic weddings consists of, well first the engagement. Then comes the mehndi (henna ceremony), and then the barat (wedding day), and last but not least the walima (feast).

People apply mehndi on the groom/bride's toes and hands. They feed her sweets and sing traditional songs teasing the bride's/groom's appearences. The bride mostly wears something sunny, like orange, yellow salwaar kameez.

The barat is the day where the wedding actually takes place. It can be anywhere, in a hall, tent, etc. Most commonly the bride wears red lenghas (a skirt secured to the waist.) and choli (blouse). At the near ending of the wedding, the groom takes the bride away.

The waleemah is a place where you can just have a big dinner and laugh and talk with your family.

(I must honestly say, it's much better then the Christian/catholic weddings. There are a number of days in Islamic weddings before the real wedding begins.)

Well christian weddings have rehearsal dinners where the wedding parties get together and spend time together. They also have engagement parties and wedding showers. So there are also several days included in weddings under other religions as well.

so? it makes it more enjoyable. Don't criticize another person's faith when you can hardly stand people to do it to Islam.
Much of it is traditional, and very fun. And not all Christians have alcohol at their wedding. don't generalize about something you have little knowledge about.

@tassan: why are weddings prohibited in that month?

@tassan: why are weddings prohibited in that month?

well in the month of Moharam weddings are prohibited because that is the saddest month in the year because alot of people were died!! (they had got shahadat but duno how to say it in english)

and for that reason listening to songs(marriage songs) is haram

so no body does marriage in that month!!

other reason can be that when islamic weddings are done in my neibourhood the baraat could be the reason for prohibiting marriages in moharan

since shi'a muslims make rallies on the day of 21 Moharam

and a few other days!!

so that the saddest rally does not see the happy baraat!!

i guess this would be the simple answer to it!!

tassan, I think you guys forgot that poor Ratri hardly knows any Arabic.
I think all she knows is "inshallah" and one swear word xd

I know I occasionally get lost in all the 12th century jargon.

We go by a lunar calandar, so the months always change. but just say for example Moharam is currently in the month of ______ for this year.

That's what I think she's asking.

Ok...so you don't play happy music the month someone dies....
AND you don't play in the month of Moharam? User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

What if you're planning to be wed ahead of time and someone dies? do you change the date?

and what if no one dies in the Month of Moharam...is it ok if you play happy music?

*is trying to understand*
