So far I have found NO ONE that plays this series. It consists of 6 games, including tactics. They are so awesome. It is based on 108 stars that you have to collect, no not a Mario Complex. But each star... is a playable character to help build your empire. That is why the game really is so versatile. Not to mention there is just not random battling, there is also big battling (army vs. army) and single duel, all within the context of this game. The game is fantastic in my opinion. This is because when you have certain characters together, they do special moves that are incredibly powerful, attack multiple opponents, or have special effects that affect the whole board, that really has to make you think about... "wow... who SHOULD I have in my party?" The games originated on the PS1 (yes I know old okay?) And they STILL had the 108 stars that were playable there too! Personally this game compares to FF7, although FF7 is better, and really, is the only close second I have found. I hope this thread will get SOMEONE interested in this game so I can FINALLY talk to someone about it LOL!

I own a copy of each game, and have downloaded copies of the 2 SuikoGaiden games for Ps1 that were never released in here.
Also, as of earlier this month, a new title has been trademarked called Suikoden Tierkreis.... granted, all this means is that if they make a game, they have a name... but people trademark names all the time... still, its a hopeful step in the right direction.
My only argument is that the Suikoden series is NOT better than ff7 or any other FF game created. FF7 was full of significant plotholes, to the point that they had to make multiple games after the fact to fill them...and they killed off one of the only characters that was worth playing with... as for Sephiroth, he is a whiny momma's boy in comparison to a Suikoden Villain such as Luca Blight, who killed and slaughtered for the sake of killing and slaughtering. The main characters of Suikoden (Tir, Riou, Lazlo and Frej Falenas specifically since 3 was kind of a gray area) are so much easier to sympathize with, since in reality, they REALLY get the short end of the stick if you think about it.
it was a good attempt by Squaresoft for the first 3d RPG game... but in the end, the story and characters for Suikoden far outweigh the broken complexities that is the FF7 world.

First off, OMG THANK YOU SOOO MUCH FOR HAVING SOMEONE THAT ACTUALLY PLAYED THIS GAME!!!!!
Okay... I agree with you, FF7 is no where as low as Suikoden HOWEVER, that being said, it is also a game that really was well designed as far as customization more so than anything before FF5. FF5 had the job system that really revolutionized the gaming industry (hence FF X-2). However, Suikoden had real merit (expect for 4... that sucked with the length of the game for a PS2 game). However, I will say that Suikoden Tacitcs was much better made than FF Tactics. My opinion there but THANK YOU SOO MUCH! I have YET to find anyone that played this game!

YES!!!! -jizzes himself- SOMEONE WHO PLAYS! I LOOOOVE THIS GAME... especially three (i love the way they set up the trinity sight, to allow you to see the three views of the main characters, and then they have thomas, koroku and then Luc(when you beat the game with all 108 stars) I'm so glad i grabbed a copy of it when it came out, suikoden 2 cost 100 dollars on ebay, isn't that insane? Anyway, yes, The only thing I hated about this game was the fact that it ended. And another thing I dislike suikoden 5, even though the battle system was fixed, and then the map was better and so were the monsters, I just didn't like it.
EDIT FROM CAPTAIN: Hey the sexual connotations, can we please keep them to a minimum, actually I am going to add this to the rules. But... We do have underagers in here and I really do not want to make them feel uncomfortable... sorry for adding this but... yeah...

Nooo wayyyy... 5 was like... the pinnacle... That was like an updated 3d version of 2 I MEAN OMG! LOL! Funny that I just read your intro LOL! That is too funny. BUT, 3 is still the best I agree with that. The Vid in the beginning is absolutely fantastic, and I really like how they set it up as 3 different stories that all combine into one.

I'm gonna disagree with everyone haha — Suikoden IV was my favorite.
I played through Suikoden 4, but never all the way to the end. I'm bad at RPGs that way, I often take a break when the end is nigh and I never get back to them... Anyway, good series, I enjoyed 4 a lot, and was sucked in with the anime cutscene opening (which sadly never showed up again as the mode for cutscenes =) I liked the narrative bouncing between the three main characters a lot, especially when it all comes together at last and you choose one as your leader and such. I enjoyed the castle capital city too. It's got one of the best "epic" type plots in a game I have played, i.e. nations going at it, and all the many factions doing their things, I am really impressed with the integrity with which it managed to execute things in the plot o,0
Now, I shall skip (ok, so I'm not really skipping them at all haha) the slanders to FF7 ... which really doesn't have many, if any holes in the plot... and also the fact that they never made sequels to explain aforementioned holes... (though there ARE sequels, they were made purely to try and milk the success of FF7, which they really failed at recapturing with 8 and 9, and yes, the sequels to 7 are hidddeous... I am not completely forgiving Square for Dirge of Cerberus, or even Advent Children. However, these sequels are precisely so crappy because there is NO room after 7 for any sequels, and they twisted stuff from 7 to even make them work...) AHEM! Anyway, speaking of Final Fantasies, FF12 tries the same kind of epic sweeping Nation vs. Nation story line, but falls short of Suikoden 4 on good execution of it.
I tried Sui5 and didn't get into it... Slow wind up, and I think at that time something I wanted to play more came out hehe.
I have to say though my favorite series isn't Suikoden, though I appreciate it a lot... And no, I don't think FF beats out Suikoden... however...
I am a real fanatic for the Shin Megami Tensei games, especially Persona 3 and Nocturne. wink Those are my picks for best RPGs around. For tactics games, the original FFT was brilliantz! It was HARD, yes, but still great o,0 but... nonetheless, it's also not the best in that genre, either, least by my reckoning. The Nippon Ichi games, such as Disgaea, Phantom Kingdom, etc, are. wink

Just because it was late when i posted last night... i just wanna clarify one thing about my post... i was arguing the statement "FF7 is better than Suikoden" i actually do believe it is the other way around for the reasons mentioned above... i find all suikoden games better IMO.
with regards to 5... it was the first Sui game i played...i actually played them in a rather obscure order... (5,3,1,2,4, tactics) The story was intense, and even though that was the case, i still love 2 more than anything... it was worth the $130 CDN i paid for it.

Well, although I DO love 2 and own it, I still find the best to be 5 JUST based on graphics in comparison of the two. Because game play, intricate game play, and team formations were all the same. Seriously, 5 was a 3d version of 2... All the way through. IMO that is why I loved 5 better than 2 HOWEVER 2 STILL has an uber load of merit. Sephirob... first off, if you disagree explain why! And did that!!! That is why we are here, it is to learn from each other! Also, 4!?!?!?!?!?! I mean Sure the boat was awesome and so were the naval battles but COME ON! All the characters were extremely easy to get! What was it in particular that made you love that one over all the rest?

Dont get me wrong, 5 had it share of awesomeness... but graphically and gameplay related, i had a few small isues.
first off Rune magic... yes it was cool and is usually different in the game, i found that there were times that they could have done a bit more with them esthetically... i realize they were working with the battle screen positioning and all, but i still think that slightly more could have been done to enhance it. Compared to 2, obviously its hard to compare 2d and 3d graphics with eachother, but something about the style of a lot of the magic in two REALLY impressed me. it was a game well ahead of its time.
gameplay related, i was a little upset about the bastardization of some of the attack runes... the Falcon Rune, case in point. That rune was basically ruined in 5, as all previous games gave it an amazing ability that was reusable. in 5 it was barely worth keeping belcoot in your party cuz hed be dazed, and it didn't share the same attack design as the others with the rapid attacks motion.
i know that sometimes i kinda dig into the nitty gritty little things about a game, but there was just something about 2 that really set it apart from the rest, and maybe it was just a collection of little things.

Hehehe yes the characters were easy to get in 4, but I truly only like to spend the "customary" 99 hours on a RPG rarely if I can help it, unless it just devours my soul and I cannot stop playing it.
I say this as my FF12 clock has ticked to 147 hours. UGH. My biggest issue with 12 is the randomness in getting certain monsters and loot. Lets hope this "make single player RPGs like freakin' MMORPGs" trend goes away >,< But that is neither here nor there...
Sometimes shorter RPGs are awesome. Shin Megami Tensei series games are this way, for the most part. Nocturne sure isn't, I did 120 some odd hours in that, and still cannot beat the uber boss for the ending I unlocked... But still... Persona 3 and Digital Devil Saga games tend to be short, tightly packed, fun and intense 40 to 60 hour romps. I liked that about Sui4.
Ahem. Anyway, yeah it was easy to find a ton of the stars, but I still enjoyed it, cause populating the castle was really cool hehe. I also like the art from 4 the best, very good characters designs, and very good characters.
There is something to be said for the first entry you play in a series. They tend to stick with you as your favorite, hence the continuing popularity of FF7, most likely. I know it was certainly the first big time RPG I played. Same goes for Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. I will always love that game the best of the series, even though I went back and played the NES and SNES titles, and have played every Castlevania on the DS and such as well. I judge the series based on how great Nocturne was.
Suikoden 4 was where I started. I hear they are doing a Suikoden for the PS3... I'll be playing that... in part cause I am addicted to HD gaming now. wink

I can't wait for suikoden on wii, at least thats what i heard....
Anyway, I want to state the fact that i want a free roaming battle field where the characters can run around as they please, and have distinct personalities. Such as bowman hide behind trees and spell casters look to iron heads for protection from melee attacks, the way this could be achieved would be about the same as FF battle style. Has anyone played hack? Kinda like that, except you can control the time they do their moves and stuff... Did i lose anyone?
And also, i dislike the challenging duel system in 5, that made me furious xD DO DEFENDNUUU!!! I HIT ATTACK AND HES COMING AT ME WITH DEATHBLOW!!! GAH! xp
PS: Who are three people who have never played suikoden?

Kojin - First off you are right on! I didn't even think about the rune magic, as compared to 2. I mean once I got the Twilight Rune I was set in 5. She was then on my team irregardless, especially when I attack and gain a lvl 4 spell back LOL XD!
Sephirob - I had no idea they were releasing a new one!!!! O_O I may actually WANT the PS3 now... JUST for that game. I mean I got the PS2 JUST for FFX LOL!
Lion - I dunno who the 3 are that never played... It is a shame though cuz they are missing out of one of the better series out there!

Many words here:
I have played the Suikoden series (only 3, 4, Tactics). 3 is probably my main favorite, then Tactics, then 4. But if one plays Tactics, they NEED to play 4 first and get all 108 stars. Lazlo is too valuable in Tactics to not have.
I have logged over 120 hours in Suikoden 3, beaten the game, but still not 100%
Suikoden 6 is NOT coming out for Wii. Suikoden Tierkries is coming out for DS, and is ~50% done.
The chronological order of the current games is as follows: 4, Tactics, 5, 1/Gensou 1, 2/Gensou 2, 3.
For more on Suikoden, go to www.suikosource.com
Oh, and Sephirob - you keep mixing 3 and 4 together in your posts.

Bahaha I did get them reversed, was thinking completely backwards. III is the one with ol' 'waiting for Geddoe" and Chris etc. THAT is the one I think is great hehe, IV is the one I couldn't get into. What? I haven't played it for years, and I play so much else that it goes by the wayside.
Besides, I, of all my gaming friends, is one of the only ones into RPGs. I can't even get any of them to check out SMT series titles, so I never talk about an especially rarely game like Suikoden. wink
III... thats the good one. VI I have only about 5 hours logged on. >,<

Wow... Mae... THANK YOU for the info update. I am so glad I found people that played this series. It is sort of like Eternal Sonata. The most popular underplayed RPG for the 360. I am buying one JUST for that game. Just like the PS3 JUST for Suikoden 6 (rumor) what IT is released.
