This is a weird trend going on right now, and frankly, it annoys me to no end! I have no issue with seeing games I love to death becoming movies, in fact, there's a ton of them I wish would be made, and a ton more I think would be brilliant movies, however...
Hollywood seems to shoot each and every one of them in the foot, either with incredibly bad scripts and screenwriting, or hideously mediocre directing...
I was curious what everyone might think of this hunger that Hollywood has for ruining our best games, one after another... Or are they...?
On that note, I also wanted to give notice to my fellow fans, about one potential ray of light, and one new potential travesty that's coming:
Max Payne. Ok, this is going to be the best game to movie yet, if the trailer is a guide! Look it up on Youtube. Its OMG awesome! And looks REALLY close to the game. This could be good... reallllly good. The guy who wrote the game's story is *gasp* actually involved!! It looks like it has moments right from the game in it, and as such, could be one of the greatest action/crime/film noir movies around. Mark Wahlberg is playing Max. I'm so fired up for it!
Castlevania. Yes. One of the most classic, great game series of all time... This one breaks my heart. Oh it breaks. Tiny pieces. Why, you may ask? Because the same idiot screenwritier who has ruined the Resident Evil movies, Alien vs. Predator, the DOA movie, and other such horrible junk, is writing this one. WHYYYY!? You may cry. You cry along with me. I honestly think this one is doomed, hideously, hideously doomed. You can find some links from IMDB to a review of a script (granted, not a final script, but a draft) and its terrfying how insanely bad this is sounding already and its in pre-production o,0 You know, I think the only thing worse than this would potentially be a Zelda movie with a script by this same guy.
But that's me. Know about any others out there?

MissDarlingDeath well, let's see. there is Tomb Raider (two movies? whaaaa? gonk ). didn't turn out that bad. but christ.. did you have to do TWO? I think the only thing that profited from that movie was Angelina's relationship with her father.. which also flopped like the movie. lol.
can't forget Silent Hill. while I definitely liked the nurse scene.. the ending was incredibly stupid.
going back in time to Mortal Kombat.. well, I'm sorry, but I actually liked this movie.. and it'll probably look lame to me today if I watched it again, but I'd rather leave my happy Kombat memories to my childhood where they belong. xD
and traveling way back.. Super Mario Bros. The Movie. I mean. wow. words cannot describe how truly awful this movie is. but what do you expect from an early 90's film? Hey hey hey now! Don't hate on Mario like that. I loved the hell out of that movie. It was so bad it was good. I can't remember Mortal Kombat, other than the fact that it kicked arse. But then again, I don't remember playing the games. Only the one for the sega genesis, and that was only because my best friend's brother had it. I loved Silent Hill as well, even with the changes made in the translation from game to movie... but that's because I've never played a silent hill game either.
And since everyone seems to keep mentioning the Resident Evil series, I happened to like the movies. I say this with the knowledge that i've only played one RE game, and it was the one that had nothing to do with the plotline.
Yeah, I've got no gamer credit. Shoot me.

Well thats an interesting thing too, a lot of people I know actually do like the RE series movies, but never have played a single one... Which is good for the producers and writers, cause that means a percentage somewhere enjoyed the shows haha. wink
But then, I make a point of loaning these friends the RE games (I have the entire collection on Gamecube, from 0 on up to 4) so they can actually see what the movies should have been. Every one of them who went through the games changed their opinions.
The thing that is bad about these games to movies I think tends to be the fact the screenwriters feel no need to stick to even the characters from the games.
The ultimate sin of RE though was to put in a super human. Alice. UGH. I like Milla, I like her in almost everything she is in, but... her character is sooo horrrrible... RE is not about monsters (or rather super humans) fighting monsters, it's about ordinary people fighting monsters. The S.T.A.R.S. team members just happen to have good training and are well armed. The horror goes away when you have an unbeatable super human, instead of a normal person who only has six bullets left in their clip and is staring down a huge, horrific, mutant death Tyrant. Alice's presence made the movie only about the gore and monster stomping. The scariness is gone. The only scare they can give you then is to sucker-punch "made you jump!" kind of stuff.
The games filled me with such dread at times I did NOT want to go into the next room.
Although, I did enjoy RE Apocalypse. The Nemesis was done pretty cool. However, he loses his charm when they constantly remind you he was a human, and of course, when you don't have to kill him repeatedly, in increasingly desperate ways, only to find him mutating more frighteningly and STILL coming to get you...
And yup, RE: Extinction was bad. Monster stomping and gore. And more of the gore. Where'd the story really go? Eh, the screenwriter didn't care either, obviously. Leave the typical zombie stuff to George Romero I say. RE is anything but a zombiefest.
However... Max Payne... ooooh Max Payne... don't jynx it by that comparison... Sam Lake (the original game's writer) is doing all the dialogue and character work... It's the best hope for a faithful translation.
