One:

Awake…

Impossible. Where am I? Who am I? Open eyes, roll over. On the ground. Look up. Buildings, apartments maybe. An alley. Strange. Clothes are…white, but dirty. Scrubs? But why? I’m not sick.

Am I?

Lying in an alley, I was born again with these thoughts. I don’t know why, I don’t even know my own name until I look at my wrist. A piece of paper, written in a scrawling hand, was the name “Helena Mitsogeious”. My name. Written below it: “I’m so sorry. I love you. You’ll understand someday.” My eyebrows smash together in confusion.

“What are you sorry for?” I ask no one in particular. I stand up slowly, just in case something is broken or there are maladies of any sort. Nothing seems out of the ordinary. If only I knew what “ordinary” was. I walk to the end of the alley, where I come across a road, bustling with people. It’s overwhelming, too many colors for my eyes to handle.

My head aches. I’m dizzy. It’s too much. I bend over and retch onto the pavement. They notice, but do not bother to help. A few cover their noses and run off. I wipe sick from my chin. My hand is covered in red.

Blood.

“I’m a vampire?” I ask myself softly. I wipe the blood off onto my pants, the red staining the almost-white linen. Then, with that same hand, I feel my teeth. Two sharp points in my top set confirms it. I look around quickly, my mouth slightly agape, searching, but for what I cannot say. An answer? A familiar face? A woman with long blonde hair and fierce blue eyes passes me. I implore her to tell me what city I’m in. She ignores me, thinking I’m insane no doubt. A man with fiery hair passes me next. I ask the same question. His eyes run up and down my dilapidated form. “Kine,” he says curtly and walks on.

Kine, my mind speaks, where the hell is that?

I ask one more person, just to confirm. When I open my mouth to speak, the woman screams and runs. “Vampire!” she hollers into the crowd after spotting my fangs. All eyes turn on me.

Run! My mind screams now. Get out!

I’m only too happy to oblige. I start off in the opposite direction of the woman. I shout apologies as I run into person after person. After sprinting at least ten blocks, I shoot down another alley and throw myself against a door. I’m near hyperventilation. I try to catch my breath, clutching my chest. Then, suddenly, I’m falling backwards. The door I had been pressed against had swung inwards, inviting gravity to pull me to the ground.

"Hello, my sweet," a voice coos. "Care to join me for a drink?" A man with brown hair and striking brown eyes grins down at me.

He has fangs.

nice character building and setting. Kine is a very hard place to create.

Two:

A pain starts in the back of my head and travels to my eyes, blurring my vision. I squeeze my eyes shut to try and see again, but to no avail so I shut them for good. 2 pairs of arms lift me and drag me away from the door. The light fades from behind my eyelids. In the distance, I hear the door click closed. My heartbeat quickens and I cannot find my voice to protest.

The pain in my head worsens as a pressure builds in my ears. We must be going down. The pressure throbs and I cry in pain. It comes out as a hiss.

"Aw, poor baby," the brown-haired vampire cooes sarcastically. They stop and gently set me down, placing my back against a wall. Something cool is pushed into the back of my neck and I feel instantly better.

I open my eyes to a cold, steel room. In the corner, a fire blazes, but the heat can't reach me across the room. I turn my head slowly, taking in the entire contents of the room. 1 bookshelf (not even full), a grey couch and a steel table with 2 matching chairs. It is cold and unappealing. I grimace from displeasure. Someone slides the door shut and it slams upon impact with the wall, making me jump. The two that carried me smirk.

"Nervous, eh?" the brown-haired vampire asks. I slowly push myself to my feet and stand. I do not answer his question. "Fine. Silence is just fine. You won't be soon though." He caresses my neck with his frezzing, pale hand. I shrug away from his touch. "Aw, now don't be that way."

As he presses himself against me, I hear the door slide shut once more.

Alone.

Three:

Damn.

A rush of hate that I cannot control moves over me. He brushes my hair off my neck. A scream rises in my throat. Not one of terror, but of pure hatred. His lips meerly graze my tender, pale skin before he is on the floor, wondering how he got there. I stand over him, claws around his throat, fangs bared. He looks into my face and chuckles. I squeeze harder.

"My mistake," he says in that voice I'm learning to loathe so. "Your eyes are green." He gently pushes me off and stands up. "Forgive me for my lack of courtesy. My name is Michel Renault. Welcome to Sain Rouge," he says, all business. I raise my eyebrow.

"Sain Rouge? What is that?" I ask, walking so that I am no longer pinned to the wall. Michel lets me move. He watches as I pass him, an evil gleam in his eye. I ignore it for the moment. I head for the couch and drape myself comfortably across it. I sigh in reflection of my body's relief. Michel remains standing.

"It is a family. A coven of vampires who care for and protect each other," he states matter-of-factly, as though he's said it thousands of times before. I do not doubt that he has. He continues: "Unfortunately, during recent years, the king of Kine has been cracking down on us vampires. His slayers are constantly on the watch for our kind." Michel smoothes his long brown hair from his face as he moves towards me. I sit bolt upright. He stands behind me, reaching over the back of the couch, and places his hands gently on my shoulders. "You have a unique trait, my dear." He cups his hand under my chin, lifts it so my gaze is forced to meet his. "Your eyes." Michel breathes, inches from my visage. "They're green. Vampires usually have blue eyes." He frees my face from his vice. I slump away from him. Michel runs his hand along the back of the couch as he walks to one side of me. "We could use you to do. . . things for us," he points to the ceiling, a belligerent smile crossing his lips, "on the streets."

"What would I gain from being your lackey?" I ask, trying to weave venom into my words. My breathing is too shallow. I'll scream if he touches me again. Michel shrugs.

"Food, shelter, family. The usual perks." He sits on the armrest next to me. I promptly move to the other end.

"Perhaps," I say, slowly. Why should I say no? I've no clue of anything and they could help me. But then there's the chance he's putting me on. I don't trust his eyes. What if he's truely as sinister as when he first revealed himself as a bloodthirsty monster? All the while I've been thinking, Michel has been staring at me in a very intrigued way. I close my eyes to escape the piercing blue stare. I sigh. "Alright," I breathe. "I'll join you." When I open my eyes, Michel's grin is wicked.

"Good," he says, getting up and offering his hand to me. I swallow hard, grab his hand tightly.

Oh, God. . .
