The days of the kusini had been long, peaceful and somewhat enjoyable. Denge had been able to keep happy, however warped her mind had turned that emotion, and had spent her time mostly keeping her eyes glued to Karen and Sesere. Many other mothers whispered that she was a little too protective of her children, she did not often let them play with other cubs and she always made sure their white pelts were spotless, but she ignored the gossip.

That was, she ignroed the gossip up until three days ago. She'd heard that Adamu was returning, apparently he was the son of the Kijumbe of these lands and she'd heard enough about him. He was cruel and it was rumored he'd killed the queen, his own mother. Sure, she'd heard that her other son had claimed it had been him, an accident, but she chose to ignore that. Right now she needed to get out of the lands, needed to drag Sessy and Karen away. This place was no longer safe!

She was moving across the lands in swift steps, her eyes glued ahead of her and it gave her almost a deranged look because she was focusing so hard, willing nothing to stop her or get in her way. She was headed for the stream, one of the few places she let Karen and Ses go off on their own for a few hours at a time. "Children?" She barked out, her voice which was once so gentle and sweet held a bitter and serious edge to it.

It wasn't a bad life that Karan and Sesere led so much as a quiet one, separated from the woes and dramas of the average lion. He was comfortable in the knowledge that he was cared for and loved and though his sheltered existence led him to care little for others outside of his small family, he found no real desire for this. It often led to others being quite irritated with him and the older he got, the less friends stayed (what friends he had made anyway). Thus, it was no surprise that this day was being spent lazing on the banks of the river with only his twin - the one constant in his life other than his mother herself.

A great yawn cracked his dark jaws, his spotlessly white tail waving the dark banner of his tail tuft like a flag. He was at peace here, at least until he heard his mother's voice and the tone that it carried on the wind. In an instant, he had rolled onto his stomach, pushed himself to his feet and was now standing attentive towards the lioness that he looked very much alike. He spared a passing glance for his pelt, to double-check that there was no missed stain or hair out of place, and then tilted his head at the lioness. "Is something wrong?" he asked calmly, though with no great degree of emotion.

Sesere stared into the river, making faces. She was practicing emotions for the future. It wasn't that she wanted to feel emotions or express them. As it was, it was easiest to dominate with a cold, haughty expression of... well, levelness as though nothing could throw them off. Which was true. But she found one could also pull another's strings with emotions since others expected them. True in that she had no playmates to test them on. The only one who stuck with her was her brother who with her was fashioned into what they had become. One could not be hurt if they didn't know how, if they had no vulnerabilities in their person. Her only flaw was a slight feeling of pride that she couldn't quite shake.

Hearing her mother call alerted her instantly. Her mother had been through a lot which had become the building blocks of their childhood and their personalities. But she had seemed to become peaceful here so hearing that tone threw up a caution flag. She whipped her head around, a frown on her face. "What?" she answered in a level tone that seemed so out of place with her reaction. The emotions for her brother and mother that she had she considered natural but usually kept them just beneath the surface if not farther.

Oh, her beautiful children! She had not messed up this time, she had done things right! They were perfect, and even on her on-coming panic she checked and rechecked their white fur, making sure it was spotless. He babies had to be perfectly clean, or how could they live with themselves? And even now, when she was sure her emotions so easily spilled into her voice, her children stayed calm! Yes, this was very serious... but her children should look proper and well kept during serious times, should they not?

She panted slightly as she finally reached them, glad that both were there. Though if she was thinking clearly she'd find that thought a bit off, Denge assumed that they were always with each other. Side by side, brother and sister. And she was their good mother! Good!

Her tail flicked as she looked wide eyed from one to the other. "Children we have to leave this place.." She said, her serious tone still there but it only seemed to mask something frightened in her voice. "Do you know who is back? Oh he is retched! He is scum of this earth... certainly we should not stay here, with the likes of him!" She hissed the last words, almost as if she was speaking to herself instead of the other two. For a long time now Denge's head had been cracked, her mind not working perfectly. She couldn't afford the mistakes she'd made in the past, and she would not let her children become like her! "That wretched b*****d.." Her eyes flared with anger, her body trembled as images of her past began to surface. No, no! Stay down... She whimpered as she pleaded with her own thoughts, looking like she was in a completely different place for a few seconds before focusing on what was going on in front of her again.

"That Ada-" She halted, blinked and tilted her head slightly. Adamu? No that was not the right name... he was the young king.... Damn these barbarians! Couldn't they keep one ruler long enough for her to remember who was which? "No, never mind... That one kings son is back... he killed his own mother, murdered her in cold blood!" She was hissing these words at her children, saying them softly as if it was some huge secret. Well, it could easily be said that gossip only poisoned those with minds which were already vile, unstable or not all there.
