She was hunting.
And this time she was trying very hard to be careful.
The herd was ahead of her, a few seconds dash away. From here she could see them grazing, their liquid eyes unblinking. The sound of them eating was a somewhat relaxing sound but Ivie paid no heed to it. She was looking at them one by one, waiting for a sign.
Which one would be her target?
Sadly none looked weak or smaller than the others. There were no youngsters, none that looked old or injured. She'd have to use all the skills that she had learnt during her life to bring one down. What were the odds of that? Probably not good, but she had to try. She couldn't let her pride down, not when they had been so kind to her! If she failed now then she was all but worthless and she couldn't bear that thought.
So, Ivie'lingwa, Huntress of the Mwezi'Johari, crawled forwards. Her piercing green eyes narrowed and found their target. A young antelope of average size and build. She let her eyes scan across its fine hide to the sleek, powerful neck. There she watched the throb of the artery, licking her lips as she thought of the warm blood, the life-force, that she would have to shed.
A moment later and she found her opening. The prey had swivelled and turned its back and Ivie exploded from the grass. She tore across the ground and, coiling her back legs beneath her, propelled herself onto its back.
She brought it down before it even realised what had happened.
The rest of the herd scattered, kicking and bucking in fear. Ivie ducked as one cleared the air above her head and with a snarl she fixed her jaws around one of the antelope's kicking hind legs.
Another kick and the trapped leg broke. The animal screamed in agony and thrashed with the last of its strength. However, its fight for life was not in vain. It jerked a vision into Ivie's conscience and suddenly she was faced with a flash of the antelope's past.
Running...running in a field of flowers. But it was not running alone. Its name was Hyatt and beside him was his twin brother Erai. Their long, gangly legs were clumsy bit fast. There was wind and it rustled pleasantly through their fur. Then from the wonderful grass came a monstrous snapping creature.
A scream filled the air.
Erai staggered and fell and the monster sprang upon it, spliing blood.
By the time Ivie snapped from her trance the antelope had gained its feet and was limping madly across the ground.
"N-no!" The bloodlust had left her and she gave a useless lope in an attempt to catch up, watching the poor antelope struggle off after its herd.
Anger coursed through her and she threw back her head to roar.

It had been a long couple of weeks for the large male. First there had been the whole situation with the damnable creature that had decided to bite him on his paw- the poison he was left to suffer thereafter very nearly claiming his life. To this day he wasn’t sure if it had been a snake or what, but he couldn’t only assume so with the two small puncture wounds that sat as proof in his paw. Luckily most of the fur around the site had re-grown, leaving only a pair of nearly unnoticeable patches missing on his otherwise flawless green coat. It had been a lot worse while the wound was dealing with an infection. Mito had been worried that he would never get the hair on his paw back again.
Yes, over being killed by the poison, the male had been worried about his looks. Strange, though, considering he had never felt himself to be one of those lions so concerned with looks. Did his life mean so little to him?
He could always blame it on the delirium.
While being sick, he had met a lot of other lions. Never had he gotten the company of so many while he was roaming around in perfect health. There really was something to just lying about doing absolutely nothing. Still, though he had been fortunate in his time down and out, he knew that he couldn’t stay as he had been. He had to move around more. There was too much to do and little life to do it in. Not that he was about to start living a reckless life, but he could at least walk a little further each day to see where it took him.
This day, he was roaming a familiar path, heading slowly back towards his den. The excursion had been a long one, spanning over two days and was finally coming to a close. Boy, he couldn’t have asked for the end to come at a better time- he was sick and tired of exploring. There had to be a better way to appreciate life more and not have your paws hurt so damn much.
He had been musing to himself what else he might be able to do in lue of exploration when he heard a roar spread over the ground. More curious than startled, Mito sniffed the air, his head turning in the direction the disgruntled sound had extended from.
Blood. There was blood in the air.
Jumping to conclusions with all the grace of an elephant, Mito sprang forward, hoping to be wrong as he rushed to see if another lion had just been injured somehow and was in need of a friend to help them. He wasn’t much of a hero. Large and sluggish, he knew the best he could do in a battle was sit on another lion and hope to suffocate them. Maybe he would just have to help tend to wounds as he had done when meeting a lioness named Siti. That, he could handle.
As he got closer, the smell of blood grew more potent, but also seemed to spread over a larger area. Maybe whoever had been hurt was moving off. That wouldn’t be good; how was he supposed to help if the guy left?
Luckily, he soon discovered that it wasn’t as he had imagined at all. He found not a wounded lion, but a familiar lioness looking rather displeased. She seemed unharmed, the blood didn’t look like it was coming off of her, but he thought it best to make sure.
“Hello there,” he offered softly, “are you alright? What happened?”
Though with that look in her eyes, he didn’t think she would really want to talk about it.

She was brought from her anger by a familiar voice. A familiar and very welcome voice, she might add. Mito! He looked just the same as they'd last met, though...maybe a little skinnier? Maybe rogue life was being hard on him recently? Or...maybe she was just remembering things wrong. It had been a good couple of weeks - maybe even longer - since they'd last met.
She observed him through her hazy, green eyes and turned around slowly to face him. Had he seen the scuffle? Had he seen her odd reaction to making contact with her prey? Or had he only just arrived - attracted to the sound of her angry roar?
Her ears drooped a little and for a moment the petite lioness looked a little unsure of herself.
"Mito." She put on a small smile and moved towards him. Inwardly she was rather happy that he was back. She'd never met a lion like Mito before. He was kindly and friendly but in a different way from Dharba. Maybe it was because he was free, spontaneous, someone much like herself in that way - living for the moment. Yet at the same time she was still shaken from her ordeal and her joy most certainly didn't show obviously on the outside.
However, by the time she was closer to him, the shaky feeling had gone and she was feeling a little better.
"I'm fine. I'm fine." She laughed and her eyes cleared a little. "You're going to think I'm a really hopeless huntress at this rate. Whenever things go wrong you show up as a witness." She grinned slyly. "But so long as you come and see me then its not all bad."
She flicked her tail, purring. "Actually, if you're free for a while, maybe you could help me track it? I wounded its leg so it won't have gotten too far."

Seeing her recognize him justified his grinning at seeing her again. After all, now that he knew she wasn’t in some kind of dire trouble he could delight in the fact that they were in shared company again. He had thought about her a couple of times since their last meeting, wondering how she was getting on and if things with the pridal life were still as wonderful as he imagined them to be. Watching her, she seemed much more collected than he wanted to be at the moment, but since she was not bounding off the trees he decided it was best to try and keep to the same kind of persona.
Just so he didn’t look like the excitable idiot.
Plonking down on his hind quarters, the larger animal smiled warmly, letting her draw closer with no reservations. After their last encounter he could hardly find any reason to be frightened or nervous around her.
“I would never think that!” protested the male, wondering if she had ever managed to catch anything before, “maybe it’s me who’s jinxed. I just pour the bad luck onto you by being in your hunting area. I’m just glad you’re not hurt! I heard the roar and I smelled blood in the air, so I was worried that something might have happened to you. I feel silly now for jumping to conclusions.”
Still, if he hadn’t have come to make sure he wouldn’t have found her again. “It’s good to see you again, Ivie,” he added after a moment, realizing that he had never actually let it known that he fully remembered who she was. He blamed the moment for that.
Secretly delighted by the purr he heard emitting from her softly, Mito continued to smile and he listened to her offer.
“That doesn’t sound too tricky,” he chuckled, “I would be honored to help you track the animal down. Maybe we can catch up a little on the way.” He was hopeful, though if they were hunting there would be moments where talking probably wouldn’t help things very much.

“You could never be bad luck, Mito.” She replied teasingly, moving close enough so that when she extended her neck, her nose brushed against his mane. “I think you’re the only male I’ve met who I’ve missed once he’s gone. There are so many terrible males out there and most of them I never want to see again. It makes me happy that you came back. Happier still that I can think of you as a friend.” She chirped merrily. “No, I just need more practise at hunting, that’s all.”
Her heart gave an excited little jump when he admitted that he was worried. He was worried about her? Well that was new. Fedha had never seemed to worry about her at all. Actually, she was beginning to think he’d forgotten all about her. How was she supposed to steal him away if he never came to visit? If Ivie was less dedicated to her pride maybe she would have swooned off to find him. But she didn’t want to risk upsetting the king, not after his kindness towards her. No, she wanted to make a life here – though she wished Fedha would come by to say hello.
“Don’t worry about it,” She replied smoothly. “I probably would have worried too.”
It was odd. She almost felt normal around Mito. She felt like just a normal pride huntress meeting up with an old friend. Never mind that this friend was more than a friend in the normal sense of the word. The purr never left her throat and, so long as he didn’t move away, she reached up to give his cheek a lick. “Thank you, honourable rogue.” She teased. “I’ll find a way to repay you later, I’m sure.”
And slowly she turned away to face the direction the animal headed and began to move off. She spoke as she walked, feeling the madness in her head sift away. Normal conversation. It did wonders! It healed the mind and soul!
“Life has been pretty slow around here. I think it’s always like that, though. It’s a peaceful place and much nicer than my homelands, though I wouldn’t have said that when I lived there. But in a way, it’s not so different from home. They look to the moon here. My old pride looked to the stars. The sky certainly is magical. It’s not hard to think that there’s a bigger, better force up there.” She paused…realising that Mito probably didn’t care about that. Or would he? She cast him a glance, smiling sheepishly.
“So how about you? How has rogue life been treating you since we last met?”

Finding that she had missed him was indeed a new delight to Mito. He had missed animals before, of course, and there were some that had said they had missed him too. But this was different. With his Laika, it was a fatherly fondness that made him wonder where she was or what she was doing. With Siti, it was concern. She had been in trouble the last time they met and he couldn’t help but wonder how she was doing from time to time. But this was a whole new kind of feeling, for him, leaving him stunned by just how many different ways one was able to feel loss. Missing someone.
Just how sharp a pain it had been was becoming more clear the longer he let himself sit in front of Ivie.
It almost made him feel bad for liking that she had missed him, knowing this new kind of pain he had been left with himself. Still, he couldn’t help it. She might have suffered because of him, but now she was getting to feel the same delight, hopefully, that he was feeling. So, all-in-all, it wasn’t a completely malicious thought at all. He was happy she thought about him at all.
“I’m happy you think of me as a friend,” replied the male, “and what males are you talking about? Anyone I should sit on for you?” he offered, poising himself playfully to try and show that he was ready for a fight. Really, though, he knew he wasn’t the best fighter on the planet. All he did was use his weight against others when needed. If she needed him for something, however, he would be all over an enemy male with every fiber of his rage.
Just to pay them back for wronging her.
Allowing her to sit quite close to him, Mito was all smiles. This reunion had come out of the blue and certainly made his week fantastic. At her lick and the comment, the male was glad for deeply colored fur, heat on his cheeks instantly. “Well, I wouldn’t go as far as honorable. Not when compared to you. And if I’m getting repaid, than it’s not honorable at all! We’re just making a bargain, right?”
He walked beside her, keeping close for the time being. When they caught up to the food, then he could move away. For now, he was content to feel her body heat near his.
Looking at the sky, though it wasn’t dark, as she spoke of her pride, Mito hummed faintly. “I suppose there must be something up there,” he commented, “I guess we rogues don’t think about that kind of thing too much. I should look at the stars more. “My life has been more of the same. Roaming short distances, meeting random animals… I was bitten by a snake not long ago. That wasn’t pleasant. Still, I’m probably the least interesting rogue out there.”
His voice was lower than usual, as they were stalking their prey now. It wasn’t too far ahead of them.

Ivie did not generally miss people. She had, once, long ago. She'd missed her mother and brother and crossed the lands for miles in order to find them. She'd missed her children - at first. Then she'd missed Dharba - though memories of him were slipping. Yet, most of all she'd missed Fedha. The one she loved more dearly, more obsessively than was natural.
Since his rejection of her she'd failed to miss anyone. The loss of her mother and father, brother and sister and children had left a bitter wound in her heart, but it had been surpassed by the loss of Fedha. To her, nothing mattered anymore. Not the fact that her children hated her, not the fact that she had given up a kind and gentle male for a life of random flings and mad thoughts on the one male she could never have.
But, odd as it was, she'd missed Mito.
Every other lion and lioness in her life was gone - by uncontrollable means, or means by her own doing. Yet, Mito was here again. To her that spoke volumes. More than he could ever understand.
"No. Males in the past." She chuckled. "They don't matter anymore." She smiled flirtaciously, turning her eyes away in a coy manner. "Honourable? Me? You have the wrong female." She laughed, throwing up her head. "A bargain then."
As they moved she found herself warmed in the heat of his form. She liked his company. She liked being in Mito's presence, so close that she'd only have to lean very slightly and her side would be against his. She wanted to be closer, then. This wasn't close enough for her liking. But enough of that thinking! She could act on that later. For now she had to catch prey for the pride.
She twitched an ear in his direction as he spoke, finding his voice soothing. "Boring? Never boring. I knew a boring male once." She chuckled. "You are nothing compared to him." She paused. "I'm so glad the snake wasn't poisonous, Mito! You could have been terribly wounded...or worse! I don't want to lose you now that I have you as a friend, so be more careful, alright?"
Her eyes turned as the herd came into view. The one Ivie had caught was clear as day. It was wounded and was swaying on its feet as it tried to keep its balance.
"This should be easy." She purred. "Are you up for a chase, Mito? Think you can keep up with me?" A flirtacious challenge, perhaps?

“You seem to have known a lot of males once,” chuckled Mito in harmless observation, watching his companion fondly. He smiled, letting the matter go as she brought on something he could really respond to.
“Oh, but it was poisonous! I was in a terrible state for a very long time. I had lost all my strength and a lot of weight, if you can believe that, and I could barely lift my head off the ground. If not for some help from a friend of mine, I may have died. But luckily, the poison must not have been strong enough to tame a rather bulky lion, because I pulled through pretty much no worse for wear. I suppose there’s a little less fur around the wound site.” He sighed faintly, not meaning to upset her with his honesties.
It was just nice to be able to talk to her. Maybe the content might have been a little better enjoyed if it had been something a little lighter.
“Don’t worry,” he assured her, “I plan on being a bit more careful from now on. Though, in my defense, I had only been walking when that thing struck me. I never even get a chance to see if it really had been a snake or not.” On hindsight, he found his defense really wasn’t that great. Sure he had been walking, but he had not been looking down at the ground at the time. His eyes had been at the sky, examining the placing clouds.
If he had been watching where he was going, IE, being careful, he wouldn’t have been bitten in the first place.
Turning from Ivie and from the subject matter, Mito let his eyes turn towards the wounded animal trying desperately not to fall over. It was a sad sight for the large animal who disliked to see others in pain, but he was already in the process of justifying what had to be done. They were hunting for her pride. That meant there were others that needed this life for survival.
What was one reason to kill this creature. The other was that it was already injured. Perhaps putting it out of its misery was good enough. He needed to work things out in his mind, or he would feel guilty.
Hunting was such a chore.
“Keep up with you?” the male returned in an equally challenging tone, albeit low so as not to startle the animal, “puh! You’ll be lucky to see the dust settle behind me you’ll be so far behind.” He was aware of the flirting, and more than happy to respond. He rather enjoyed their last encounter together, his good spirits buzzing through as he got himself ready to hunt, or more likely, play with Ivie.

"I did..." She replied. "But most of them I never knew for long." She scattered the thoughts with a shrug and let her eyes dart back to him.
She shook her head. A snake had bitten him. A poisonous snake! The poor thing! Snakes were horrible things; their fangs filled with poison and their shiny, beady little eyes glaring at you from the undergrowth. She felt a shudder down her spine just thinking about fangs sinking into flesh. She was still thinking about that when he continued
"You better be. I don't want to lose a friend to one of those horrible things." Her eyes were genuinely concerned. "And if you're not careful I'll just have to keep you here, so there." She nodded her head firmly and then that sly, flirtacious smile reappeared across her slender face. She was clearly enjoying this very much.
"We'll just see then, shall we?" She slunk up beside him, letting her side brush against his, purring deeply in her throat. Then, with a playful growl she bounded forwards. She used her back legs to power her towards the herd - and her injured prey. She was rather quick despite her delicate and fragile appearance. Her eyes lost focus on everything but that injured prey-beast. She paid no heed as its herd took flight again, bleating in terror as they swerved away to the right - back towards pride lands.
Her heart was thumping in her chest. The injured creature bleated and tried its best to hobble away. But this was the end for it. She'd see to that...
...if she won this race, of course.

“Funny,” hummed Mito in return, “but that really doesn’t strike me as much of a threat! I would stick around even if you didn’t want me to, so I suppose it goes both ways.” He knew she was flirting with him- thick though he could sometimes be, he wasn’t completely blind- and he found himself enjoying every minute of it. Why not happily return the favor and let her know that he was interested in rekindling their special brand of friendship they had acquired the first time they met?
Seemed normal enough to him.
He said nothing more about the snake, not really interested in bragging about his escape from death. Some lions just loved to tell others about their various pains and how they were over come, but it wasn’t for Mito. The male was more than content to shift to lighter subjects that prompted smiles and laughs. Especially from Ivie.
As it turned out once the race started- Mito was just as slow as his body dictated he should be.
He was fast enough to catch prey on his own, but when racing another it was no contest- he could only watch as she sprinted ahead and got within striking distance of the injured animal. Because he knew he wouldn’t be able to catch it –and had always known- he veered away from the path, his target having been something else all along. While she showed him up in one regard, he wasn’t going to go empty handed.
Or pawed.
Springing, he landed onto top of one of the other animals, still thinking that the food would be put to good use so it was okay to take the life. His large fangs sank into the smaller creature’s neck, his mass knocking it to the floor.

Words were lost to them then as they entered the fray of the hunt. The chaos from their presence rippled out like a shock wave. The herd beasts scattered, filling the air with dust from their fleeing hooves. Ivie ducked beneath the clouds and, with a terrific roar, exploded from the dust and grass to latch onto her prey.
With the full weight of the lioness on its back and the injured leg unable to hold both of them, the poor creature toppled beneath her. She misjudged the impact and was knocked free, hitting the ground with a dull thud.
And even as she shook the stars from her eyes, the prey was lifting itself up, flailing in a desperate attempt to make another break for it.
"Not this time!" Ivie growled, and thinking little of her own safety, she leapt back into the fray. Her sharp teeth sought to capture its neck, to severe the artery and spill life's blood. After a moment of frantic snapping, she found purchase and the animal bucked beneath her as it realised this time it truly was gone.
She gave a fierce wrench of her jaws and then waited, panting, as the creaure grew still beneath her.
She'd done it.
She'd finally caught something!
A feeling of giddy excitement bubbled through her. Elation filled her heart, tingled into her lungs and without thinking she threw up her head and gave a tremendous roar - so loud it seemed impossible that it could have come from such a petite lioness.
The bloodlust had her, and with a heave, she stood and dragged the limp body behind her, pausing to watch Mito. In her eagerness she'd not realised that he hadn't been following. Now, it seemed, they would both return with a kill.
She smiled.
She'd made two great catches this day, it seemed.

The large animal had no trouble sending his victim squealing to the floor. With his fangs around its neck and his entire body of top of it, knocking it to the floor was as simple as sneezing. Almost as subconscious too, the male not exactly bad at hunting even in spite of his distaste for it. As the bodies fell together, Mito pulled his head up, teeth still inside the neck of the quickly dying animal. This thrust, combined with the impact of their frames, was enough to create too much force in opposing directions, such a shift easily snapping the creature’s neck, killing it even before it was full on the ground.
Once down, Mito released it, letting it bleed out a bit while he licked his lips. There was something fun in hunting even he couldn’t deny, though he dearly longed to. That only made him feel more guilty with taking the life in the first- the pleasure that came with it. Sighing softly, he turned his attention away from the dead frame before him, looking instead at the other body in front of his hunting companion.
So she had managed to take hers down too.
Watching her tilt her head back, Mito stayed put while she roared, taking in the beauty of such a wild call. He could sense the fulfillment and delight in that roar, his own heart picking up speed again with its sounding. It was exciting. In that moment he suddenly felt young again- like he had just killed something for the first time and hadn’t become altered with the thoughts of stealing away lives.
“What a great kill!” he laughed, having seen bits of it from the side of his head as he was taking down his own animal, “haha, and so fast! I suppose I lost that little contest, didn’t I? Ah well, it was worth it to see you run like that!” indeed he was impressed.
He had loved the way her body moved as she charged her kill.
Getting up, he took his kill by the head, dragging it casually over to her so they could be closer again. The distance, he found, was displeasing when he knew in the back of his mind that they could be touching and it would be alright.
Dropping the body down next to the one she had taken, he compared the sizes a moment. Ha! His was larger.
Not bad for second place.
“Maybe I can help you drag these back to your pride,” he chuckled, “I don’t have any need for the meat.” He moved forward without any real permission or invitation, licking at the blood on her.

"Speed, I may have." She replied eloquently. "But I lack the brute strength that you have master over, it seems." Odd, she'd never thought of Mito as being big or strong or brutish. She supposed that was down to the hunt. It did something to one's head, turned a loving, cuddly lion into a raging tyrant for a fleeting moment. And then, when it was done, back to cuddly normal-ness.
She smiled and returned to dragging her kill closer and stopped to purr in delight at his offer. "That would be wonderful. The pride will be thankful for your help, I'm sure." She gave him a sly smile. "And, once that is done, maybe you'd accept the offer of my hospitality? It's getting late and you've gone out of your way to help me and my pride. As you're fully aware, my den is comfortable enough for two. It's the least I can do for you. Besides, I said I'd reward you before and I'm not one to go back on my word." Her eyes were practically dancing.
Yes, they had an odd friendship but friends they certainly were! Ivie trusted and genuinely liked his company. However, in her odd mind, the advantage of being friends with the opposite gender meant special delights; such as spending nights with them on a casual basis.
She leaned into him as he washed the blood from her fur and - with a playful growl - rubbed her head and chin against his back and shoulders. Her growl faded into a wild purr.
"So, Mito, what do you say? Could you do with a little company?"

“Brute strength?” Mito had never considered his power anything more than a fat lion throwing his weight around. Calling it strength… seemed a little strange. “Nah. I’m a big pillow. Just heavy enough to squish other things!” He laughed mightily, never against teasing his gurth. If he didn’t, someone else would and he would have to feel bad about it. At least this way he could be the one laughing.
He really wasn’t that insecure.
Hearing the pride would like it made him happy, thoughts of his weight again fleeing his mind. They never seemed to stay long.
“That sounds fantastic,” he said easily enough, “I think I would like to see your den again. And I wouldn’t leave you to take all this meat back anyway.” He watched her, his spirits so high that he couldn’t help but feel like a little cub again. So free and wonderfully joyous.
Ah, to be young.
Mito raised his head, watching the female after she had finished rubbing him. He would be a total liar if he said he hadn’t been wanting her to offer her company to him. That was a part of their friendship that he, admittedly, really enjoyed. He had never been so close to another lion, and had never been so intimate with a female. And they weren’t even mates! He really didn’t know what to think of it, it being their relationship, but he knew it wasn’t a bad thing.
“I think I would love some company, since you’ll have me. How can I refuse such a kind offer?” he replied, getting himself to his feet and taking the leg of his kill in his mouth, dragging it a little to show that he was ready –more than ready- to get going.

She chuckled. Big pillow or not, her affections for him were strong. She didn't care about his weight. To her Mito was Mito. He was, in fact, her best friend despite the fact their friendship had only just begun to kindle. There was something about him that she trusted. Something genuine that she adored about him. She felt safe with him, not on edge as she often did around males. So, he was perfect just the way he was, as far as she was concerned.
She purred, the sound deep and intent in her throat. Now she wanted nothing more than to run with the kill as fast as possible, to close the time so that they could look to better and more enjoyable things. Things more enjoyable than dragging a dead animal across the ground, for instance.
But she had to be patient. Her job as a pride member came first. She knew that with all her heart. Besides, the longer she waited the better it would be, right?
Her eyes sparkled. "Then, let's be off!"
Wriggling with joy about not having to be alone the night alone, she lifted her own kill and, with a bounce of energy, she loped towards the pride. Her heart sang as she went, lifting her paws into a happy trot.
---
After a short stroll, Ivie finally arrived at the clearing - a common place for the pride members to gather and feast upon. An empty carcass lay there from a meal a few days previous. A raven tore at the last of the stringy flesh at the rib cage.
The bird did not even look up as Ivie made her way into the scene, setting the kill down upon the grass.
Freeing her jaw to speak she turned to wait for Mito to do the same, bubbling over with joy and excitement.
"I'll call for the pride then we'll leave them to it. I don't know about you, but spending some time in the den is far more appealing to me than making polite talk with pride members." She preened.
