The Festival
The demons of the Aikanaro’hini idolize strength, unity, and obedience among other things. As they believe themselves to be vessels or mortal incarnations of demonic souls from the realms beyond the material plane, darkness is of prime importance to the members of the pride. As such, with the turning of the seasons and the noticeable triumph of night over day, the demons have become active and festive in order to honour this event.
They call it Samhain.
This is not a happy festival, however, not by Outsider standards. The demons have cordoned off certain trackways in their territory and have discovered a miniature maze within their sacred volcano. This maze is separate from the blessed walkways and the holy ritual chamber making it a perfect trap area to entertain their guests in. It is a dark and frightening place, with tunnels that hiss from the wind that blows through and pools of magma that has worked its way to the surface. These pools give off an eerie glow and are one of the only sources of light in this place. Other light comes from the occasional open-air vent that reaches into the sky and lets natural light in but these tubes are narrow, more often then not serving only to remind the brave or perhaps foolish soul of their current situation.
The demons themselves are hidden, lurking among the shadows to take pleasure in the fear and pain of those visitors they lure into their maze. Despite the viscousness of attacks or the terror of a hulking, snarling shadow, none who enter will be killed outright. This festival is a show of strength and cunning by the demons, to honour their gods and the world. Blood may be spilled but no life will be taken within the maze.
Outside the maze, hunts and scouting groups are gathering visitors and food and one particularly special guest. There is strength in blood, you see, and to consume that strength is to increase the power of the pride. This special guest will be a sacrifice – made by the pride leaders and presented to their gods. The ritual is the climax of the festival and with its conclusion, the visitors will be run out of the pride lands to spread word of the demons.
