What was that?
It was small and fuzzy and bouncy, and alone. It didn't look like a hare or something like that, no, it was far too proud-looking for that. It wasn't big enough to be one of the more confident prey beasts either. The wind shifted and he aahd, understanding. It was a cub.
Wait, a cub? What was a cub doing out here alone? And especially with fur like that...white and blue from what he could be. The Aikanaro'Hini slave colors. He cast a furtive glance around and then set off briskly towards the cub.
While some demons might have raced up to the cub, grabbed him up, and run back into the pride, Hewa had no plan like that. Slavery was not an appealing concept to him, and the few slaves he did interact with he always treated as well as he could. No one else was around...he might be able to shoo the little one away before someone else came along.

Demons. Buibui'Sefu had seen the demons in his dreams when he woke up in the mornings, and though his mother had told him not to... he couldn't resist. He had to see the real thing. The real evil that lived to close to his home, that he was going to fight against when he got older. He had to see the other side.
Not for their side of the story of course. He knew that much, his visions had told him that. But he wanted to actually see them with his own eyes... and there was no way that his mother would have let him get so close alone. No chance.
...So imagine his suprise when he found one so early. A demon. Right there on the horizen. How odd. "Stand back demon!" The cub cried out, completely fearless, and quite clear about how he should handle the situation.
A situation he was in no way prepared for, visions or no.

Hewa slowed when he heard the cub cry out at him. What had he said? 'Halt demon?' Well that meant he knew where he was...but then he had to know why he really shouldn't be there! If you knew about the Aikanaro'Hini enough to know what they were, then you knew that unless you were 'one of them' you'd best stay far away.
Piqued with interest, the rather large adolescent made his way a little closer, moving at a calm, easy, open walk, giving the cub ample time to react. "Hello there!" He called while he was still a ways away. "You might want to hunker down by that bush there until I reach you, alright? If you know I'm a demon then you know that you're a prime target for being so close! And personally I'd rather not have to take you in because you're out here making a racket in plain view, alright?" He finished lamely, stopping just yards from the smaller cub. "What're you doing here?"

Buibui laughed, seeming quite pleased with the response of his enemy, "Don't be a fool! You couldn't catch me if you tried demon! And even if you did, my pride would know, and they'd come and get me. My sister can see the future, so she'll know before you do whether or not I'll be safe." And he seemed to be entirely faithful in that idea.
"Besides, my mother is a demon hunter. I'm not afraid of you, you should be afraid of her!" He seemed to be even more sure about that than anything else, "I just wanted to see the demons everyone is so afraid of first hand. You don't look so tough. You're just a kid!" This coming from a cub was a little pathetic... but he seemed to totally believe himself 100%.
"So I wouldn't get too comfortable demon, because I, and my pride, are all going to come and get you, and show you what real fear is like!" He sat down, proud as could be, and stared down the demon-lion to make his point.

Hewa tilted his head to the side a bit. This cub was strange, to say the least. "Your sister is a seer? That's nice. My sister is a crafter. She makes nice shiny things. And I"m not trying to catch you, I'm trying to warn you." He huffed. "Not all demons like slaves, you know, and even if your sister 'saw' that you were fine, I'd rather not take the chance." He carefully shifted so that should any other guards pass by they would only see him seemingly staring off into space, and not the young lion.
"What's a demon hunter?" He asked curiously. He hadn't heard of that before. From the sound of it though, it was a pride that didn't like the Aikanaro'Hini. A frown crossed his face. "Why would you hunt us? We haven't done anything." Yet at least. He knew there were plans, or something, but nothing had been done that he knew about. But then, he had only been with them a little time, and things could have happened before that. He let the comment about his being a kid roll off with a shrug.
"Real fear, huh? Sounds scary." Duh. "Where is your pride, by the way? Is it nearby?" A thought occurred to him, and, against all supposed demon nature, he broke into a wide smile. "Hey! You know what, we're going to be having a sort of festive soon, I hear! With a maze in the volcano and everything! I'm not sure what all it'll be, but the others seem excited, and it's open to outsiders. You should come and see it! The volcano is really nice, it makes it warm."
Was this really one of the 'scary demons' Bui had heard about?

No, no this certainly wasn't the scary demons that Bui had heard about, or frankly like the ones he had seen in his own visions at all, "I don't think my mom would like it if we all came to the demon pride. Especially when we're supposed to hunt you. That's kinda our job mister... but you don't seem very scary at all. Why are you hanging around with demons?"
The questions about his own pride though, made Bui very proud, "A demon hunter is a creature that makes sure demons don't hurt or enslave any creatures out there, even if it means killing them. Because demons are big and nasty and stupid. That's what my mom says. And so our leader made a pride to make sure that demons... well, not demons like you, real demons, don't do any of that! And I'm not telling where it is, because then the demons will find us and attack us, and I don't want my mom getting hurt. Not that she would. She'd win in any fight!" That also he seemed quite sure of. He seemed to have an ego the size of the demon's volcano.
"And yeah, my sisters and I are all seers... but only my one sister can see the future, not the rest of us. Because our dad is a-" Was he supposed to go around telling others that? He wasn't sure. His mom hadn't said that who their dad was, was a secret... but maybe he shouldn't tell?

Hewa blinked. "Aww, well it's supposed to be fun. At least, that's what they told me. I've only been a member a little bit, so I wasn't around the last time they did this..except they didn't do this last year, I heard. We just found the maze. I don't think I like the sound of being hunted. It's a weird job to have. I mean, we're both lions, right? I just have something inside me that lots of people don't."
He laughed and smiled. "Oh I'm not scary huh? You should see me when I'm hungry! I could scare the meat right off a gazelle! As to why...I'm not sure. I met some of them, and what they believe explained some things I didn't understand about myself. Some of them are pretty nice once you get to know them. My sister is one too now, and that's wonderful! Not all demons are big and nasty and stuff. I mean, I'm big, yeah, but I'm part f-..." He paused, amused. Looked like they both were half something that might not be best shared.
"Hey, I'll tell you what I'm part if you tell me what you're part, huh?"

"Well... I'd ask her, but I'm not even supposed to be here. And your our enemy, so I don't think she'd like it even if she did. And I should have probably tried to hunt you, right here and now so... I can't really say much about that. And it isn't a wierd job at all, and I've seen what some demons do. They kidnap lions and they hurt them, just like they hurt my mom's friend, and they took one of her kids, who I might have been friends with otherwise. And I saw when they did to Dogo too. So no, demons are bad. What you have inside you is bad... and Mom says that we can take it out, if you let us, but if you don't, then we're supposed to kill you so you don't infect or hurt anyone that doesn't deserve it." Bui said, clearly believing everything he said... though he still didn't really think the lion in front of him was all that 'evil'. But what he had seen demons do in his visions clearly was bad, and he wasn't going to stand for it.
"Demons aren't nice or good. I don't believe that at all." He said, making a stand on that, "You're just... a defective demon." That seemed reasonable. A demon that wasn't working the way he should, so he was acting nice... or he was just trying to kidnap Bui when he wasn't paying attention! He would have to watch for that.
"I'm not supposed to tell, I don't think." Bui said, glancing from one side to another. Maybe he could make something up? That way the demon would give up all his secrets! "You see I'm... I'm really part bird!" Now where had he come up with that?

"Hmm...well I don't want to be your enemy. Being friends is more fun, I think." He blinked at the cub. "But I thought lions hunted prey animals, not other lions. Do demon hunters eat lions then?" He had to think about the kidnapping though. Hadn't he decided to be a seeker...Hmm. "We don't kidnap lions to hurt them. We kidnap them to teach them things. And most of the time we don't kidnap them at all, we just go find them, and if they want to come they come." That was how he planned it would go at least. "Like...if you knew you wanted to be a demon hunter, but couldn't find anyone else who did, and then one day a demon hunter showed up and said they would take you to more hunters, but only if you left everything you knew behind, you'd be happy, right? That's what we do. I think at least. It's what I plan to do."
Hewa laughed. "I'm a defective demon? Well that's not the worst thing I've been called." A distant look clouded his eyes, as he felt Him stirring inside, strumming on his heart like the strings of a violin, testing for their tune. "My demon is different from the rest. He doesn't like to fight."
"Part bird! Really? Can you fly? Or are your wings not grown in yet?" He stood and tried to peek around the cub, to get a look for those 'wings'. Of course he knew the little fellow was joking, but that was alright. "Well I'm part fish! But my scales all dried up and fell off from all the heat here. There's not enough water."

Bui did not seem to be impressed by the older lion's answers in the slightest. He knew better, he had seen better, and he had been taught better. Though... he had never seen this lion do anything bad in his visions. But he knew that not all the demons were like him. If any of them were, "No. That isn't how it works. Because demons stole one of our leader's kids, and beat her up, and then came back to try and steal more. I've seen her scars, and she's not happy because someone took her kid. As far as I can see, that doesn't teach anyone anything except what it means to be unhappy. I know if one of you demons took my sisters, I'd want to come and kill you myself... and we don't eat demons. That would be gross. And then we'd have your demons inside us too. We just kill them so they don't hurt other lions, or make them their slaves."
To the other comment, he seemed indignant, "Anyone who wants to be a demon hunter should go and look for them, like my mom did. We don't need to send lions out looking for them, they come to us. Only the bravest and strongest are allowed to join, like my mom! We don't let in cowards." he eyed the demon-lion, trying to determine whether or not he was being tricked, "And your demon seems like wuss." He seemed rather pleased with that comeback in particular.
"And no. My daddy could fly, but I can't. He even flew down and saved my mom. And if you're a fish... then... well..." This was a trickier comeback to come up with. Certainly there was something he could put forward, "If you're a fish, then I'm a butterfly!"

They stole one of the leader's kids? Huh..."Who was it they took, do you know?" He realized he was interested. He knew most of the cubs in the pride by now, so it was likely he could show that said kid wasn't badly off at all. Unless the kid was a slave..."Well I'm glad you don't eat demons. I don't think I'd like being eaten."
Still managing to be lighthearted (so very odd for a demon!) he bobbed his head. Some demons came to the pride on their own. He had. Sort of. But he knew there were those who simply would not be able to find the way. As a child he certainly had never known about the Aikanaro. Not until after he was stolen by the vampiric lions had he known.
He laughed. His demon was a wuss. "I've heard that before, actually. Just because my demon isn't a fighter people assume that. My sister's isn't a fighter either, though she could be. Maybe it's a family thing. We don't mind though."
"Ah, a shame. I bet you'd be great in battle if you could fly. No matter though." A laugh. "Well how about this, little butterfly, if you tell me your real secret, I'll tell you mine. Or show you one of my demon's powers. Either or." There was an exchange that might be of some worth!

Bui scowled a little, "I don't know his name... but he's a leopard and a lion mixed together. One of boss-lady's sons. Mom told me about him, it was part of the reason she got so angry. His brothers and sisters and his mom all miss him, and one of your leaders tried to kill ours to take him away. So you can't tell me they're good, or that he's happy. I won't believe you." And he probably wouldn't. Bui was a stubborn, and arrogant child when it came down to it, and once he had an idea in his mind, it was hard to remove it.
Then he rolled his eyes, "What's the point of having a demon if you aren't going to use it to fight? If I were a demon, I'd pick on you for being such a chicken. And when we attack you, sooner or later, you'll probably get killed. We don't have any weaklings in our pride." He seemed to be a bit proud of that, but he eyed the demon anyway, "But... I guess I could convince them to spare you. I mean, you're not... normal. We could probably just take your demon out of you, boss-lady is training us on how to do that." There, that seemed reasonable, didn't it? This demon wasn't so bad... and he'd probably be just fine if they pulled his demon out. And if his demon didn't like fighting, it wouldn't be that hard.
Bui finally sighed, glaring at him, "Okay. Fine. But you have to tell yours first, because my mommy told me to never trust a demon. Not until you've seen their hand and know you have the advantage." Lesson 101 really. His mom had always been rather tough like that.

"Hmm...a leopard and a lion...Well I only know one of those, his name's Bavu...but I don't know, he seems to be pretty into living with us, so maybe it's not your fellow." He'd have to look around better once he got home. It might be nice to tell a slave they were still thought of, even if there really was no hope they'd be free again.
Hewa shrugged. "Well some demons help you do better at things. Like I told you about my sister...her demon helps her craft, make decorations and weapons. A demon that's smart is better than a demon that's strong, anyway. It's like having two heads to think with, not just one." That would probably be taken as a bit of a jab to the cub, as if Hewa had meant that the hunters were strong but dumb...though he hadn't.
"Alright, alright...since it seems to matter to you more than me, I'll go first." Hewa smiled, stood his tallest, towering over Bui as if he was a full adult, not just an adolescent. He could feel it in his heart already, that pride so natural to his breed. He could almost smell the fire that ran in his blood just thinking..."My secret is...I'm a firekin! My sister is too."

"Well, if he does like living with you, it's a trick. And if he did want to live with you, then he's just as bad as you are, so it doesn't matter, and we'll just have to kill him too." Bui said, not seeming to see any illogic in the way he was thinking. Sometimes what had to be done, just had to be done in his mind. How his mother and the rest of his pride might have felt about that, he didn't know.
"Doesn't matter if some demons are different, they're all bad." Bui said, obviously not seeing past the "demons are evil" part that had been drilled into him, "Your sister might craft, but she'll craft so you can have slaves. You might have two heads, but one head just wants to hurt innocent lions who might not want anything to do with you. Evil is evil, no matter how you try to say it." The world was black and white. At least for Bui.
He tilted his head and blinked, "A fire... what?" He had no idea what that was. It seemed important to the demon, so he'd have to ask his mother about that later, "Well, my secret is better." He said, sitting back and smiling, obviously rather proud, "My father happens to be a God."

Hewa smiled a bit, and had he felt the cub would have allowed, he would have patted him on the back. "For a cub, you've sure got some resolution. There's plenty adults that would have had to think long and hard about how they'd deal with something like that. Not saying you're making the right choice, but you've got guts."
"Mmm, but what if the demon inside wanted to change? People change, so it makes sense that demons could too. There are lions that are very bad, but they one day see they're wrong, and strive to be good. Why can't a demon be like that, hmm?" Hewa was prodding the cub to consider more than his blatant one-way rote of thought. "Not all demons kill, you know. Or pride's only half like that." It was true. Morifaer's followers might delight in that sort of thing, but Sparda was much different. Still forceful and strict, but devoted to coexisting, not overtaking the world.
"Oooh...is he now? That is interesting..." There were gods on the side of the hunters? Huh...usually they weren't interested in mortal affairs, he'd been told. But then, hadn't he just met Morifaer himself recently?
Speaking of which, he'd better go. Go and report the cub? Well...maybe. He stood, offering the cub a half-genuine, half-wicked smile. "Well I've got to go...Things to do, places to be...cubs to steal." He winked and started to leave.
