Marakl

He wasn't much to look at or be afraid of. He was a scruffy little creature, not a good weight but not terribly thin either. He was teetering between being average and sickly, able to keep on his feet but not strong enough to put up any sort of fight.

He wasn't a fighter though, so it didn't seem to bother him.

No, our Marakl was a talker. He was one of those types who puts things bluntly, not caring if he steps on toes or bruises feelings. Its not out of meanness or anything of the sort. He just didn't seem to realise.

Maybe that was just the way of hyenas.

Or maybe...maybe...who knows?

In any case, this little chap was moving rather noisly through a great pile of bones. He was half-buried in the mound, his bottom sticking out, short tail wagging from side to side.

"There. Got. You. Now." He had his teeth around one particularly large bone and tried to pull it free. It didn't work. The bone was lodged. And, as he made an attempt to wriggle back to freedom, found that he was stuck too.

"Uh oh..." A pause. "Mar! Mar! Marzi, are you there? MAR!!" A couple of bones clattered past his hind quarters but his front-half seemed completely stuck.

"MAR HELP!"

Small black paws scurried quickly through a dusty landscape. Micah was on a mission. She'd heard something that had torn her from the nap she had been taking. That was one big difference between her and Baal, her twin; the earthquake had barely woken him up, while the little female had dashed away as soon as the dust had started to stir. Just moments ago there had been a commotion, and the pup's blueberry eyes had snapped awake. Now, the small black creature was determined to find the source. It had better not be a lion.

There was a grimmace on the young hyena's face as she trotted forward. Her mother was adamant about hating lions. As was her grandmother. There was no way she'd betray them. Micah'd tear them up if she had the chance. Maybe she'd get one now. Up ahead a voice rang out, a loud seemingly panicked one. Micah charged ahead to see a figure buried in a pile of bones. She huffed quickled out her nose, frowning as she looked upon the sight,

"Hey! You there, INTRUDER!"

The trapped hyena fell still and a moment of silence reigned. He seemed to be considering his reply quite seriously, though any that knew Mar would know that he wasn't. He never thought before he opened his mouth. That was his trouble.

Finally; "Oi! Get away. These bones are mine, got that?" His voice was muffled from his head being stuck but they were clear enough to understand. Then after another second the hyena began to wriggle again, desperate to get free. More bones clattered down around him and suddenly he felt himself being pulled free as the mound of bones began to topple out across the ground - like grains of rice escaping through a tear in a bag.

And with the bones came Marakl, lying sprawled on his belly and coughing as he sucked in the clean, fresh air. He didn't stop to pay much attention to the other hyena, however. Instead he dived back onto the bones, stumbling and tripping his way across the the huge bone he'd had in his teeth moments before the mound had collapsed.

"Ah ha! There you are." And he lifted it up with a triumphant wag of his tail - though its weight pulled his head to one side.

As the figure covered by a pile of bones spoke, Micah couldn't help but feel offended. The female puffed herself up, growling lowly as she glared at the creature through narrow slits,

"S'cuse me? Your bones?"

Seconds later, the creature seemed to dislodge himself from the pile of bones. The dark hyena looked him over as he tumbled out. Ok, another hyena, perhaps she could relax. However, as far as Micah knew, this male was not a pack member. He didn't look like one, he didn't smell like one. Either way, her grandmother said that any hyena is welcome in the Graveyard, unless they prove themself unworthy. She'd figure it out. Tilting her head up, Micah slowly walked closer to the male, observing him critically as she did so.

"Like I said, they ain't yer bones. If any thin', they's mine."

As far as Micah was concerned, she had first dibs on anything that touched Graveyard soil. She was related to the alpha, after all, and in Micah's mind, that gave her all of the special privlidges in the world.

"Uh huh." He replied, dragging the bone a little further away from the rest so that he wouldn't lose sight of it. He didn't trust the bone not to try and escape when he was looking the other way. As he dragged it he cast his purple eyes back to the other hyena, wrinkling his nose a little.

"Whaaa?" He loosened his hold on the bone to speak and it fell to the ground with a hollow thud.

"Whatt're you looking at me like that for?" He lifted an ear and gazed back at her, unsure what the expression on her face meant. He'd not really seen it focused at him before...it was kinda how he looked at Atreyu at his most mopey.

"Yours? How comes? I dun see your name on 'em. 'Sides if you just leave 'em lying around like this then you gotta expect all sorts of people coming around to take 'em." He wrinkled his nose and set a paw on his bone so it couldn't run away. "If yah want one then go get one over there. There's plenty of 'em, right?"

And, with a chuckle, he picked up the bone in his jaws and moved into a trot, one end of the bone dragging in the dust.

Micah huffed, flattening her ears back against her skull. Who was this mouthy character? Didn't he see that she was important? The female's dull claws were digging in and out of the dusty ground in agitation. She often got very frustrated when others asked her questions, especially males. She was the only female in a litter of three, and boy, was she used to being the boss.

"On accoun' ya deserve it!"

Micah tossed her head with her words, dark mane scattering before her gaze. She never thought of it before, others just coming in and taking the bones. Why would anyone do that? The bones belonged to the Graveyard. Then again, they also belonged to the hyenas... In her thoughts, Micah had failed to notice that the male had continued talking and after that, trotting off. Dark blue eyes suddenly snapped into focus to find the newcomer running off. With a stirr of motion Micah galloped after, quickly catching up and cutting him off as she trotted before him.

"Yah, mine, well, th' packs'! My gramma, she's the alpha. Means is 'ers. Means is mine!"

He skidded to a halt as his escape route was cut off. Ugh, girls! What was she trying to do now? Trip him up? Get him to drop the bone so it broke and he’d have to go back and look for another one? The whole point of getting these was for the challenge of working his teeth into them so he could listen to the satisfying sound of them splitting open. If it was already busted wide apart, what would be the point? Didn’t she realise how long it had taken him to select this one. This one like no other. This perfect chew toy that could give him hours of mindless fun.

He set it very carefully down – in order to free his mouth for talking – and frowned.

“Your pack owns…alla this?” Boy, it had to be a biiiiig pack. Between him and his two fellow pack mates they’d only managed to scrape a few bones between them. The piles here suggested a pack of…maybe hundreds of hyenas and other such critters.

Wait…was he in any danger right now?

He knew pack loyalty. He knew what Micah was doing right now was what he would be doing if someone had tried to take a bone from his collection.

Uh oh.

“Gramma?” He huffed. “Well that ain’t nuff-ink. My Mar is pack alpha. She’s like…my Sis, see?” He huffed, not mentioning that their pack only consisted of three members, including himself and the alpha. “Dun’ be so greedy. Yah got plenty and I only need one.” He continued briskly. “You dun need to tell no one about me being here or nuff-ink, not unless you’re a tell-tale.” Maybe he could talk his way out of the situation. Yeah, that’d work.

“And if I dun have no bone to chew on my teeth’ll rot outta my mouth. That’d be sad cos then I’d get sick and even zebra won’t be good e’nuff to save me.” He let his ears droop and his eyes widen – ever so slightly. Maybe he could get himself out of trouble by pulling the same cheap tricks he used on Atreyu.
