In the warm, quiet darkness of her den Ivie found great comfort. She was not alone this night. This time a male was with her, but not just some male wandering past. It was a friend, a dear friend. She lay draped over him, peaceful for maybe the first time for a while, her breathing even and her eyes half-lidded. The moonlight tilted at the perfect angle, sending a stream of pale, ghostly white into the den where it touched across her face. It caught in her eyes and had them glowing with some unnatural energy.

She stirred in her half-sleep and turned her eyes towards where Mito lay. His body was warm and solid beneath her, a good pillow, a good source of warmth. He was a handsome male, whether he knew it or not, and if her heart allowed her to love any other, maybe it would have loved him. Cruel then, that her heart was elsewhere - trapped in the clutches of a lion who would not return the affection.

She sighed, reluctant to sleep, reluctant to let this moment go. She felt so comfortable. So happy. It had been a long time since she could say that. And it was all thanks to Mito, this rogue who appeared to her when she needed him the most. Friends for life are rare to come by, but she knew she had one in Mito - despite the fact that she didn't deserve it.

She slipped away from where she was draped on his shoulder and reached out with a paw to brush bangs of mane from his face, then, slowly, she leaned forwards to kiss him.

A mistake, apparently.

The moment she did a vision struck. It threw pain into her limbs and had her gasping with pain and fear.

---

She could hear Mito calling her. Hear his voice upon the wind. She was running, fast, panicked. She wasn't sure why but she knew she needed to reach him. She staggered across rugged terrain - stumbling and tripping - until finally he came into view.

She called out to him but her voice was muffled and echoed.

Then, with a desperate attempt at reaching him, put on an extra burst of speed. But, to her horror, a river seperated them. A deep, fast-flowing river that would be deadly to cross. She screamed for him. Screamed. Why couldn't she get to him? Why couldn't he hear her?

Pain swelled in her stomach and she looked to see, in horror, her body changing shape. Her belly growing. Pain. Fear. Difficult to breathe.

Mito!

---

Tense and terrified, Ivie tried to curl in on herself, trying to ease the pain in her stomach that resided even now, when the vision was over. The den around her offered no comfort. No respite. Why, she thought to herself, why now? Why me? Why? Why?

Why does the world torment me so?

Mito, as his healthy frame may have indicated, had no trouble falling to sleep, even though he was in a new place and felt a little on edge about the whole thing. He wasn’t sure he was welcomed in the pride, though so long as Ivie was there he knew he really didn’t have much to worry about. Like she would take him to a place he wasn’t welcomed to. In any case, it really didn’t matter what everyone else may have thought about him being there- one lioness was happy and that was more than enough for him. With this peace in his mind rest was easy to follow, the large creature fast asleep. The day’s hunting and walking had tuckered him out a good deal.

But for once it was a kind of tired he really enjoyed.

He had been dreaming. Of a lioness he had met before, when he had been injured from a snake bite. There was something unfinished with that lioness, he just knew it. Nothing of a romantic nature, but something… else. Something he couldn’t quite place a claw on. She was vivid in his mind. The way she liked to sit in trees. There were others… little creatures marred from vision by black shadows. What were they and why were they with Siti?

There was no way of knowing. Soon the random thoughts of his mind shifted and he started to dream about tender, delicious rabbit meat.

Mmm.

His mind shot away from all dreams soon enough, however, when he heard something that sounded like a gasp come from beside him. Opening his eyes, he raised his head straight away, snapping it in the direction of the sound. He saw Ivie beside him, curled and quite in pain.

“Ivie!?” he gasped, all but leaping to his feet and drawing himself closer to her. He moved to get himself in front of her, nudging her cheek gently with his nose and giving her a comforting lick. He didn’t know what had happened, and it only made his heat beat that much faster in his chest. Was she attacked by something? Was it some kind of illness?

Was he really that heavy a sleeper that he couldn’t waken while something hurt her?

“What’s wrong?” he asked worriedly, “what happened? Is there anything I can do? Ivie?” He seemed to think that only talking would help, the questions unable to stop until he bit down on his tongue to give her a moment to compose herself. It had been a long span of never since he had cared so much about someone else- so this whole thing was very new to him. Sure, he had friends. Good friends. And he had been intimate with others before too. But a combination both? That was hard to come by.

That was something he only shared with one. With her. The lioness lying in pain before him while he stood like an idiot without any idea of how to help her.

She gasped, desperate to pull herself together, desperate to stop herself from going into full blown panic mode - if she hadn't already. She felt Mito stirring, knew that realisation had hit him. She was hurting and now he wa worried. Oh no. Oh no. This couldn't be happening. Now he was going to know that she was a freak? Look at her as if she were...a cursed, disgusting...thing!

She cracked open an eye and looked up at him as he spoke her name. And, as if that had been enough to dispell the panic, she felt something in her chest ease, made breathing come easier.

"N-no." She choked out in response, drawing back a little and forcing herself to calm. It wasn't the first time this had happened and she knew it wouldn't be the last. "No, it's okay. I-i'm fine." She swallowed and after a moment of silent shaking, lifted her head to look at him, apologetic, sad.

"I'm sorry." She felt the tears welling in her eyes. "I'm sorry. I d-didn't mean to wake you. Now I've ruined everything. I...I..." Another pause. "I'm so sorry."

She could tell him it was just a dream. A bad dream. But would he believe her? And did she want to lie to him? She thought of him as a friend now. A very good friend. But, if he didn't know the truth of things, was he really a friend? She shuddered and looked away, uncertain.

“Whoa, whoa!” Mito said, watching her. She looked so flustered! Why was she apologizing to him?! He just wanted to know what was going on and she looked like she had just killed his mother and was now regretting it. “It’s alright- I don’t need to be sleeping so much anyway. What happened? Was it a dream?” He hadn’t seen anyone get so worked up about dreams before, but then again he rarely had anyone with him these days. The chances of one of his few den buddies having a nightmare while he was there were slim. Statistically.

But not impossible, it seemed.

He didn’t like seeing her look so upset. Tears in her eyes- his friends weren’t supposed to look so forlorn. It made him want to do something to help her- but she was apologizing to him like he was involved in the matter. Though he didn’t know what had happened, he felt a little guilty.

Which only made him want to make it better even more.

“You don’t have anything to be sorry about… really! Calm down, it’s alright. Why don’t you tell me what happened? Or… I could bring you some water?” In a leaf. He’d have to find a leaf. Anything to make her feel better. Stop those tears from falling, Mito, stop those tears.

Watching her, dorky smile on his worried face, he tilted his head to one side, more than ready to turn flips and make goofy faces if it meant getting her to smile again.
