1.) All firearms are always loaded.
2.) Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
3.) Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire.
4.) Be sure of your target and what is behind it.

(Spoiler: No one gets hurt.)
Okay, here's the back story: Tom (my Step-dad, I'm only 15 so I can't purchase a firearm) bought a Marlin Camp Carbine Friday, and picked it up today. It has a red dot sight, and we switched them out with fresh batteries. I'm usually the first one to point out something unsafe, such as ear plugs, safety not on, loaded firearm, pointing at someone, etc.

We (Tom, Ashley, my Mom, and myself) were all fondling his new rifle. It had a short stock for my mom to use, and we all shouldered the rifle several times, putting the dot on various items throughout the room. I, being the fool that I am, aimed at a my web cam (a nice little black ball, the perfect target), about a foot or two from Ashley ( My step-sister). Who was sitting at the computer chair.

I was promptly told to put it down, as I was aiming at something a little too close to someone. I gave it to my mom, who pointed the Marlin outside (blinds were closed), possibly at the neighbors and/or passing cars. She gave it to Ashley, who aimed at a snowman on the wall. Bryan was sitting at the dinner table, doing his homework. Tom aimed at the same snowman. Both of them would have accidentally shot Bryan if it was loaded, and the firearm discharged.
Tom's also one of those people that thinks it's funny that when you tell them that he's doing unsafe, he'll take the magazine out, rack the slide to make sure there's no bullets left, and then put the barrel on his temple. It's stupid, and he does it just to piss people off.

Anyways; now I feel like crap. I greatly dislike being told to do things, and I (largely) dislike hypocrites even more.
I feel I am no worse than my family members safety wise now.

Am I expecting sympathy from my fellow members of the GGE? No.
Am I expecting forgiveness? That doesn't sound likely.
Do I feel we/I (all) can learn something from this? Sure.
Do I feel better now that I've posted this? A little bit.
Am I expecting you guys to feel less than me because of this? Of course.

What say you, people of the GGE?
Am I no better than my family?

I also get to go to the range less because now my mum wants to go, and so does Ashley. Because of this new rifle.
My only saving grace is the Ruger Super-Redhawk (Magnaported heart ) in .44 that he put a $100 deposit on, but hasn't decided if he wants it or not.

In before the annoying TL;DR comments. Including you, Fresnel.

On rule 4 you forgot "... and what lies beyond it". Over penetration is a bad thing for anything on the other side you don't want to kill.

I figured it was understood because I talked about it in one of my paragraphs.
But yes; that's 100% correct.

IMO;
It'll end a bit like what happened at that 'compound' except...
I'd be more accurate.

My dogs are friendly, the most damage they would do to you is dirty up your clothes by jumping on you. (at least the pup, the other one might just slobber a bit.)
I'm still trying to break it but a hyperactive puppy is... quite hard to train.
