Oh, so you're getting into writing, eh?
Here's some advice; make sure you have a solid storyline, a goal for the characters to work towards. Trust me, if the characters don't have goals, there's no story. It may start out interesting, but soon it will wither and die.
The readers will want knowledge of the characters, too, even if the other characters don't know each other. If they have some deep dark secret, you can hint at it with the character blacking out and having a flash back, something simply reminding them of it, or they could be thinking about it, etc. This way, you can give hints to the readers what the secret could be, but it wouldn't give it away just yet; you'll leave them in suspense, and that gets them hooked. They'll want to keep reading and reading!
Here's another thing; have a feeling and a setting. Even if you don't describe what the area around them looks like, keep a picture of it in your head so you'll know where they can go. As for feeling, make sure you know what the characters are feeling and get that across; also give them the correct emotion for the situation they are in.
Example 1; If the character is, say, at a party with his or her bestest best friends in the world. They wouldn't be moping in the corner, they'd be having fun and laughing, partying with friends. For a situation like this, give him or her a happy-go-lucky kind of feel, and get that across in his or her actions; smiling, laughing, joking around, etc.
Now, example 2; If the character has, let's say, stumbled across some unkindly folk. We'll say her or she is at gun point. He or she would not be happy-go-lucky; they would be frightened, so give them that emotion for this situation. Have him or her tremble and cower.
Example 3; Okay, let's take example 2 and mix it up a bit. Let's say someone's trying to steal the characters wallet, but the character knows self defense. In this situation, he or she may seem a little scared; perhaps to throw the criminal off guard, but mostly this character would be cautious and analyze the situation. They may go to give the robber their wallet, or ask what they want, to merely distract him. When the robber is distracted, they would quickly disarm them of their weapon, then they would swiftly exit the scene and call the police.
Remember; self defense is about defending oneself, or another person. It's not meant to be used to start fights.
Also, if you plan on using some type of martial arts move, do some research; you don't have to take classes, just find a video or description of the move you're trying to write about. It's never good if you're wanting the character to do a side kick and end up describing them doing a tornado kick or something.
