i just read -Eluveitie Eventide-'s topic on silver ravenwolf and was just curious about how you feel about ellen dugan (author of cottage witchery). i haven't heard any negative reviews about her as of yet, i actually like her books and the way she writes. i was just wondering if she's had any where near the same impact on the crafty community, for the positive or the negative.

just being curious (and wanting to make sure i get good, decent information from my books)

I've never read her works. But I tend to be rather skeptical of anything Llewellyn publishes.

is there a better publisher? i love reading, but thus far all i've ever found are published by llewellyn with the exception of a couple that my mom ordered off the net

I've got a couple of her books. I find her tone a bit bleh. And there seem to be holes in her knowledge but for a quick read she's not bad. You can get something from her books at least.

I'm just getting into Geraldine Pinch and Roselie David but their books are a bit specialist.

I'm not familiar with her work at all.

Personally, I love her. While a lot may scoff at her for various reasons, I like her informality and wittiness. Then again, I'm a non-religious witch with a strong independent streak. Her writing suit my nature.

i currently only have 1 book by her (cottage witchery) but i have looked for others. i know she has one called 'kitchen witchery' (my mom has it) and she has one about magickal herbs. i really enjoy her writing style, i'm very imaginative and her work gives great imagery, imo.

((edit - ok, i was mistaken, it isn't called 'kitchen witchery', but i forgot which one my mom has sweatdrop ))

Here is the review I wrote last year on one of her other books (for what it's worth). biggrin

Quote:
Review of Natural Witchery: Intuitive, Personal & Practical Magick by Ellen Dugan: I always say that all knowledge is worth having, so in that sense this book isn’t a complete waste of space, but overall I think it is a little bit too “fluffy”. There are some good practical exercises that might be useful to those who are just starting out, or for those who are seeking a deeper insight into their own “magickal” personality, and some interesting information on various correspondences - including a whole section on moon phases and elements. The book also covers how to incorporate your “witchiness” into your daily life. I think what bothers me most about the book isn‘t so much the information in it, but how it’s written. While this may just be a personal issue, it seems to me that the book is just filled with cutesy witchy stuff/buzzwords and not as much practical info that serious seekers might want to know (no one needs to spell magical with a “c“ and a “k“…if we are reading a book on witchcraft - we know what you are talking about without the extra letters). A lot of the information in this book (and much better) can be found with a quick Google search. Is it nice that she includes a journal section (insert cutesy title…“Book of Witchery“…need I say more)? Yes, but a true BOS should be your own, not part of someone’s book. So overall, I have to say that this one is not going to be high on my recommended reading list - if you find it cheap (or at the library, as I did), then you might give it a glance, but otherwise definitely not worth the $17 cover price.

I think if she didn't try so hard with the "buzzwords" she'd probably be ok, on the general witchcrafty stuff, and to be completely fair it could be Llewellyn's fault, they've been know to tell authors to add crap like that to "make it sell better". I think too it is really going to depend on what kind of practice one is looking for - of course that would be the case for any book.

i tend to agree that she is a bit "fluffy" but i actually enjoy it because most other stuff i read tends to be oh so serious and a little fluff in life is a good thing. it appeals to my imagination smile

I went to a bookstore and found one of her books titled "Garden Witchery." I decided to buy it and when i dug through it if i didn't like it i would toss it, but i found it to be pretty good. she's slightly fluffy, but not too bad. she has some things in it that are very useful and i like the way she writes about how the things in her book tie into different situations she's encountered. i haven't read enough of her to decide she's good or not, but from what i've read from that book she's okay.
