Diction is the word. Syntax is the sentence.
Diction is the root word for such things as 'dictionary'. Dictionary: a tome of words and their definitions.

I've not been active on Gaia much lately, but I beta-read on fanfiction.net. I tried to tell one writer they had diction errors and you wouldn't believe the response I got. Apparently they thought I was cursing at them in some other language or something. Five emails later I give up trying to politely get it through his head that 'ruin' and 'rune' are not interchangeable (among other things) and diction has nothing to do with male anatomy. gonk (Old account being brought back to life.)

I'm in the military. A certain some one keeps trying to write me up for disrespecting them. The man can't take much literariness from a subordinate without feeling insulted. Although, when I do speak in layman's terms, he only spins the message my syntax sends and attempts to write me up for disrespect once again. Something tells me the man has it in for me.
