Ellie wanted to see it this time...the sunrise. The moon had already set, and the night sky was dark, save the stars sprinkled across it...and a gray light on the eastern horizon. She'd snuck off from everyone else to this spot...this one spot as far from the dens as she could get. The dark cub was hiding in a 'cave' made by three rocks. Large enough to fit her and maybe another comfortably, but certainly not big enough for an ADULT.
And Ellie was counting on that to help keep her from getting found right away. She wanted to stay here...and then when the time came, she would watch the sunrise. And see why her mother hated it so...

It was dark. Without the light of the moon and the sun, it was a strange kind of darkness. Vito was enthralled by it. He had a hint of a smirk on his face as he traipsed silently along the dry ground, turning his head left and right every now and then to make sure no one was following him. He felt powerful and confident, like a sneaky assassin in the night.
Red tuft swaying as he shook his head, the black cub pushed those thoughts from his head and continued on his way. Of course, he wasn't the kind of cub who went out to do things without merit...
He was looking for his little sister.
Tilting his nose to the air, Vito breathed in all the scents around him. His ears flicked up when he caught his sister's scent, and he trotted in her direction. She'd gone far from the dens, the little sneak. She would be in a lot of trouble if she got caught. Vito, being a pretty good brother, didn't want her to get yelled at all by herself. Also, he didn't like thinking about her being all by herself away from everyone else in the middle of the night...But he'd never share that fact with anyone.
Vito spotted a cluster of dark rocks forming a kind of dome. This sight was accompanied by his sister's scent, and Vito knew he had found who he was looking for.
Flashing a grin, the cub jumped in front of the rocks.
"Boo!" he whispered.

Ellie had been dozing, attempting to not give into the pull of the dream world...and of course, wasn't paying attention to anything around her except the color of the sky. So when her brother snuck up on her...
Well, the answer was a shrill shriek of 'EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!' She'd backed herself against the 'back wall', golden eyes wide and fur on end until she realized it was Vito. And then she calmed and went forward again, looking rather apologetic. She'd probably hurt his ears with that shriek...And even though Ellie was a good demon-cub, she rather disliked causing her brothers such harm. Fights were one thing; ear-hurts were another.
"Uhm...Hi Vito! Sorry...about that..." She smiled sheepishly.

The shriek was loud and pierced Vito's ears, but the majority of the noise somehow was contained within the rock cave. Which Vito was grateful for; it wouldn't be good if any adults woke up...
The black and red cub kept his ears flattened to his head, even though his sister's yell had ended. "Shhh!" he hissed. "Do you wanna wake up the grown-ups?!" But Vito's scolding mood ended quickly; he could never stay upset with his little sister for long. "It's okay," he whispered, shrugging it off and relaxing once again. He peered into the small rock enclosure, wondering how his sister had found it, or if she had somehow made it herself.
"What're you doing out here, Ellie?" the cub asked curiously, just a tinge of worry in his tone.

Ellie pouted at her brother. She hadn't meant it...and they were far from adult ears. Ellie had made sure! Her smile returned when Vito said it was okay. No matter what...Ellie knew she had Vito! And Half-Brother Nyota.
Ellie grinned at his question. "I wanted to see the sun rise!" Her golden eyes held a hint of mischief. "I saw the sun once, when I'd woken up in the middle of the day. And...I just HAD to see it some up! I wanted to know if it's anything like watching the moon rise."

Vito's ears flattened at his sister's pouting face, not liking when she did that. He was both irritated and a little distraught by it. But he tried to shrug that feeling off.
"See the sun rise?" Vito echoed in a whisper, quirking a brow. He paused for a moment, thinking, gold eyes wavering left and right as he thought. "It can't be like watching the moon rise. 'cause the sun isn't the moon; they're different." the cub explained, sort of like a teacher explaining something to a delinquent student. However, the cub didn't think about how stupid his explanation was.
To his cub mind, it made all the sense in the world. The sun was the sun, and the moon was the moon. Therefore, they weren't alike at all. So how could watching one rise be similar to the other? The only thing they had in common was that they both rose into the sky at some point. What a silly idea...Wanting to see the sun rise...The moon was better, anyway...
"...Can I watch?"

Ellie pouted. She hated it when her brother made sense and it didn't support her thoughts. "But...The moon is like dim sun!" She wrinkled her nose. "It's a circle of light in the sky." She sighed and just shook her head. "But maybe you ARE right. I still wanna see it~"
The dark cub giggled and nodded to her brother, a grin on her face now. "Of course! Company is always better than being alone!"

Huh. A circle of light in the sky. Vito hadn't really ever thought about it that way before. He was a realistic cub, seeing things just as they were; not really looking too deep into something. To him, the sun was the sun and the moon was the moon. Other ways to describe them hadn't ever occurred to him before.
Ellie was wiser than she knew, perhaps.
"I dunno about that," Vito muttered with a small smirk, clambering in beside his little sister. He made himself comfortable, sighed like a begrudged old man, and stared out at the sky. "sometimes I like being alone..." he said, gold eyes focused on the coming light on the horizon.

Ellie snorted and nudged him. "Oh come on...you know I'm good company~" She grinned and chuckled. "There's gotta be someone else in the pride you don't mind?"
And she didn't say what she really wanted to. That Ellie didn't really like being alone. She dealt with it, because she knew she could always run back to her family. But she hoped she had a mate or admirers once she was an adult. Because the thought of going back to a den empty of family...it was scary.

She really was a weird one...Sometimes he didn't understand why he stayed close to her to keep an eye on her. The feeling of strong protectiveness he got whenever she was around was odd, but he didn't really oppose it. He just questioned it a little. 'cause they weren't really that much alike. If anything, he was more like his younger brother.
So when the question of being able to tolerate someone else in the pride came about, Vito was puzzled for a moment. He paused, thinking, warm rays of sunlight reaching over to touch his paws.
"Well..." he mumbled, narrowing his eyes in thought. "Mom, I guess. But mostly you." he said, shrugging, not realizing that what he said was really nice. He could tolerate his younger brother at times, but they clashed more than anything.

She smiled and scooted closer to him, admiring the sun as it came up over the horizon. "Thank you, Vito." Ellie turned her eyes to him and grinned. "I think...you're the best brother ever." Even big half-brother Nyota couldn't compare to Vito. "It's pretty...isn't it? Bright...but pretty." The sun seemed to warm her in a way the hot springs couldn't.

Vito blinked, frowning and glancing away, feeling slightly awkward at his sister's open admiration of him. No one ever really said kind compliments to him like she did, and it always threw him off guard when she said something nice like that.
The sun stuck to Vito's black fur like prickly thorns, but it was pleasant, not painful. He was slightly surprised at how...well, how pretty everything looked as the sun washed the land in its light. He glanced at Ellie, a small smile flickering on his maw for just an instant, and then he looked back to the horizon again.
He knew they wouldn't be little forever. His thoughts were above his age as he mulled over the future...wondering what would happen to them when they grew up. Yes, they wouldn't always be together like that, watching the sun. He wouldn't always be there to look out for his little sister. But no matter what happened, where they went, or if they ever parted ways, Vito knew that they would still be brother and sister.
"You're...the best sister, too." Vito mumbled awkwardly, his voice nearly inaudible.
And with that, he let his worried thoughts roll of, heaved a sigh, and watched the sun come up over the horizon.
