Every day, Hakuna grew more and more glad that she'd stepped down as a Tirma'eth. For one thing, the skin around her scars hurt less. And the scars that ran deep where giving her less trouble. And she didn't feel utterly exhausted at the end of the night.
And tonight, she had a lesson in mind for one of the pride's youth. Her adopted son, Bavu, had shown interest to her in being a Tirma'ath. And she fully intended to make sure he was ready for it. She'd already been teaching him how to fight, and how to stand up against non-demons...but there were other things. Things one could only learn from one who had guarded.
So she'd started off from where she'd finished the younglings' fighting practice to find Bavu.

The leopon felt strong. He’d been growing- working his way to adulthood one step at a time. It pleased him to know end to see that his genes allowed him to grow larger than lions, something missing in his DNA that normally blocked growth. A defect of hybred breeding, but something he was rather happy to have all the same. It wasn’t like he knew the science behind any of it anyway. For him, the equation was a simple one:
Big Bavu = good.
He moved eagerly, spotting his more-or-less mother not too far away from him. Though when a child he’d been quite angry with her, now he looked to her for guidance and advice. She’d changed. He’d changed too. The pride was good for changing animals, it seemed. And not always in a bad way.
“Hello!” he called to her, leaping the last of the distance between them before bowing his head respectfully in greeting, “I’m glad I found you! Can we start training now?”

Hakuna chuckled at her nephew-son, a crooked smile on her maw. "Yes, Bavu...we can. I was seeking you out for just that, actually." Today...she would teach him how to stay alert, no matter what. Or...start teaching him anyways. "Today's lesson is the most important one you can know as a Tirma'eth...awareness." She nudged him towards a clearing with a paw. They would start simply. Though some lessons were best learned in the thick of things...this was one that had to be built up.
"As a Tirma'eth, you must always be on guard, always aware of the world around you. The slightest lapse could spell ruin...for you or for the pride."

Bavu listened intently, eagerness to learn apparent on his face. Shifting his gaze to the clearing for a moment, he nodded, heading in that direction while still taking in what the lady had to say. She knew what she was talking about- of course she did! He had to make sure he paid attention.
And didn’t start to daydream about his future life as a guard.
“Always be on guard,” he repeated, “right! I can do that.” He wasn’t the worst when it came to paying attention, though he had been prone to getting lost in thought in his youth. Thinking about his previous family. Perhaps he’d have to deal with that.

Hakuna nodded. "Good. I've recruited some...help for this lesson. He'll help us until I say otherwise. And he is not a gentle teacher." She waited until Bavu was at the center of the clearing, and then moved so the beads on her armlet clinked together.
A moment went by, silent...and then a black and white bird burst out of the grasses behind Bavu, claws forward and aiming for between his shoulders. The help, apparently, was Matata, and the magpie was looking forward to maybe getting to draw some blood.
