Xiang lay nursing a new cut, it wasn't bad, just something he'd gotten for being hot headed during lessons, he'd licked it until the bleeding stopped and now he lay eyes half lidded at the mouth of the den he slept in alone. Today he was pondering demons and the different ways they affected the lions of the pride. Xiang felt his own as an inner fire that burned at him, but was unusually silent. Xi often wondered if it had a voice, and if it did not, when the name quest was upon him, what would it take to learn that name. This along with the days lesson had Xiang in a rather low mood, so he lay frowning in the shade of the cave entrance, not that Xiang ever smiled.

The day was bright and the weather fair. He had no lesson to attend and there was still a lot of time left before bed. So why not head out for a bit of exploration? Lately it seemed to be his way of life- looking around the pride to see what was going on. Many of the lions were busy with their own tasks, but he did manage to see someone lying down not too far away from him. Someone to speak with, perhaps.

Drawing closer, he noticed how bright the creature’s pelt was. The bits that weren’t obscured by what looked to be a maze of scars and wounds. In his time in the pride, he’d never seen anyone with so light a pelt, nor anyone so apparently used to battle. Even his “mother” didn’t have so many scars on her.

Pity- it tugged at his heartstrings.

“Hello,” he offered faintly, not sure what else to say in greeting, “you look like hell- you need any help?” He didn’t know how many of the wounds were old, and how many he still suffered from. Better to keep things general for the moment.

Raising his head when the male voice called out to him, it wasn't one that he recognized, nor was it harsh as what he was used to, Xiang backed his ears, his reaction automatic, even if he -slightly- felt he should maybe regret it, after the words left his lips.

"Feh, I don't -need- anything! Especially gawking strangers, if you've come for another reason, spill it."

Upon giving the adult a more through look, Xi kept his ears back, and his expression in a frown, this lion seemed not quite right, off somehow. Was this the affect of his demon, or perhaps he came from some other land, such as Mahewa did. Xi narrowed his gold colored eyes and stare at the other male, hard. Golden orbs shone from his sockets as well, the same as his own mother's, the same as Hakuna's, Mahewa . . .

"Er, that is, forgive me Elder," the title was said with respect and he lowered his gaze, half expecting a reprimand and the other half? "These lands are at the mouth of hell, are they not? How else should I look, in this skin..."

Almost all of the scars criss crossing his pale pelt were old and healing, though still bright and pink against his fur and skin. He had gained them starting from his youngest days, dealt by his brother and the others he had fought and defended himself against. Xiang was reckless and also 'used' to battle, though his abilities and strategies had only begun to become more honed and less erratic as of late, when he began his lessons, so only a few were new and only the one fresh, though it had scabbed over by now.

Xiang's current den was one of the farthest out, he rarely had visitors, or fights these days, besides the ones called lessons and training, though he still expected them, even with his brother, now weeks gone.

Bavu didn’t react harshly. Clearly this guy had a hard life- of course he got upset seeing a stranger there! He should have been easier with his introduction than that. “Whoa!” he said quickly, taking a step back, “I’m sorry about that! I promise I wasn’t gawking at you. I was just… well, I’ve never seen you around before. I didn’t come for any other reason, I was just passing through.”

He knew how things worked in the pride, yes. Maybe he shouldn’t have gone so far out himself. But it wasn’t like he couldn’t relate to this paler creature. He had his demon, but he was still unlike all the others in the pride. Bavu the leopon in a world of lions.

Being a hybrid, he would never get to be like the others. Never hold ranks as high as some of the cubs he grew up with might. Still, he had his goals. They were great no matter his limitations within the pride.

Just hold to that.

Smiling, he sat down, keeping his distance just in case the other snapped again. “You don’t have to call me Elder,” he remarked thoughtfully, “my name is Bavu. I was exploring the lands when I saw your den. I didn’t mean to disturb you and I can leave if you’d like me to. But… I’m not going to hurt you. Or talk down to you. Or anything like that.”

"Bavu." Xi nodded, confirming the name, he tried to be respectful, if only in words and titles, his feelings on the other hand were anything but, "I'm not a slave." He stated, "You've seen me now," Xi stood wearily, he was smaller than the leopon, smaller than his brothers, but still well muscled and strong, "I may be pale, but I've a demon, just like you and every other lion in this pride."

He wasn't threatening, just letting Bavu get a good look, Xi knew that some thought his scars were a sign that he was a poor fighter, and even if he said he had not come to gawk- well, they all looked at him with disgust anyway. "I'm not disturbed. Do whatever you like." He settled in the shady depression again, not used to company nor pleasant talking, he figured that once this Bavu got whatever it was that he wanted from the meeting, he'd be off, and Xi could go back to his thoughts, as quiet as they were.

“Well that’s good to hear,” Bavu replied, happy to know that he had a demon as well. For a moment he was a little worried there. Though, he wasn’t really sure why the other lion felt the need to announce that he wasn’t a slave. Had he given the impression that he thought he was a slave?

Whoops.

“Not that I’m actually a lion,” he noted after a moment, “I’m only half lion myself. I guess it’s not really something the others appreciate. I don’t really get spoken to a lot around these parts. But I, like you, have my demon, and that’s all that really matters, right?” It felt weird to see someone who had a crummier life than he did. Being a leopon was bad enough. Thank God he wasn’t a pale colored leopon. There was no way he would have been alive. Then again, if he hadn’t looked so much like them, he wouldn’t have been stolen in the first place.

“Alright, I will,” he said as Xi told him to do what he wanted, getting the distinct notion that the lion wanted him to leave. But it didn’t mean he was going to- he wanted to know more about this lion. “So do you want to go hunting or something? We could see each other’s skills.”

Although the impression hadn't been given in any straight forward manner, Xi had become so used to having to defend himself and his place, his pale pelt was a hated thing on sight. If the adolescent had to look on it himself in full everyday, he though he might come to hate it as well. It was lucky that there wasn't much in the way of reflective surfaces within the prides' land, he could shut his eyes at the waterhole on the days when self loathing would creep into the higher places of his mind.

The pale demon raised his eyes to Bavu at this admission, a little stunned. His expression shown such, before he shook it away. Hadn't they been taught since cubs; lions were the only creatures with the power and- 'we were also taught that paleness was weakness' implied a silent inner voice, Xiang worked his jaw for a moment, grasping at something to say.
"..." Nothing came to mind, his usual snark and biting attitude easing away in light of this new demon before him.

Xi moved to standing again, slowly stretching, the scars along his limbs pulling tight, the surrounding skin gave while the scars were stiff, his claws worked the stone under his paws before vanishing again when he was fully righted.

"Spilling blood that's neither my own nor my pride's?" Xi smirked. "I like the sound of that."

Bavu could not deny that he was, indeed, a very strange demon. He knew he had never really fit in with the other creatures, as much as he had always wanted to. While he loved to fight and he knew he would defend his pride with all his heart, he also knew that he was a good deal... softer... than most of the other members of the pride. There always seemed to be something lurking in him that was somehow missing in the others.

Perhaps it was something only a hybrid demon could have.

It didn't matter. His home was still his home, no matter how much of an outcast he seemed to be. In his heart, he knew why he was so different. But his mind refused to unlock the memories of his capture, of his being taken from his mother to never again see her.

He smiled, moving along to find a nice hunting spot for the two of them. With him being ridiculously large and the lion beside him obviously no stranger to a fight, he felt they could take down some impressive prey. Something larger than a gazelle.

Maybe there were buffalo around.
