Political Volunteerism and Activism

I was thinking we would have a thread to talk, specifically, about political activism and political volunteerism we've all engaged in or are currently engaged in. Feel free to share any causes you work for or campaigns you have volunteered for.

I'm a volunteer at Right to Life [a pro-life organization]

Over the summer [last summer] I collected more than 80hours of volunteering at the Right to Life of Michigan HQ. Outside of the stuffing envelopes on my own time I've received lists of phone numbers I called to endorse the pro-life candidates. My opinions may differ on some levels of who should be voted, but this is a single-issue campaign. Last November I stood precisely 100feet away from the entrance to a poll area and handed out certificates with a list of pro-life endorsed candidates.

When school started again I joined the Grand Rapids Students for Life Drama team which is also called REALITY [Responsible Educated Activists Leading and Inspiring Today's Youth]

I'm sorry I would have to say, that I have never been involved in political activism or political volunteerism. The Republican Party calls me every year and so does my State Rep but, I have not helped out. Right now I work 3 jobs and going to college so, there would really be no time anyway. Maybe in the future.

Politicians are tools, mainly. I do some activist work for the rights of Zarathustri in Iran.

I guess I should chime in here. I started volunteering for campaigns back in 1996 with the Dole campaign by way of Congressman Joe Knollenberg's office. I maintained a volunteer presence with Knollenberg's office till I moved out of district in 2004. In 2000 I took a sabbatical from school to work full time for the Bush campaign. After that I focused mainly on issue activism, which I did much more of in my internship at CIR in Washington DC. In 2004 I was too busy to do any credible volunteer work, but in 2006 I did a lot of work for d**k DeVos' campaign for MI Governor (mostly out of hopes of defeating Gran-mole, I actually voted for the Libertarian Gregory Creswell). In 2008 I was too busy to do any work for McCain, but I did donate to the campaign.

Aside from organizations I've done a lot of activism against Affirmative Action, which culminated in going to see the Grutter v. Bollinger trial at the Supreme Court.

Wow I'm impressed, you have kept yourself busy all these years.

I've been helping out the State Rep. from my district. It's mostly secretary work but it's well worth it.

Last year when I was sixteen, I went to Republican Headquarters and made phone calls for John McCain, joined a pro-life walk, and participated in a Yes on 8 rally with my church. That's my activism history so far, but I really want to become an activist for the pro-life movement.

If anyone here ever wishes to help seriously contact your local Republican Party hub and join the local party. You will always be able to help out as there is always something to do, regardless if it is a voting season, elections or anything, there is and will always be something you can do to help.

So please, extend your hand and join up and help in any way possible. This is true grassroots people- extend out your hand and get your back into it. We need all we can to fight this plague of Corporate Fascism, Neo-Socialism and Statism called the Democratic Party.

I am always on a campaign of some kind. When you work in a Capitol city, there are plenty of politicians looking for some grunt workers. My next big volunteer will be for my former boss' Lt. Governor run.

Heh, sweet. A guy I volunteered with in 2000 is probably going to be the Republican nominee for governor here in MI in 2010. Funny the people you meet and what they go on to do. What state will this guy you mention be running in?

Well, I went to a Tea Party on the 4th of July that was really fun. Shockingly, there were no mobs.

I am proud to say I am beginning volunteer services for Meg Whitman in her race for the Governorship of California! Wish her luck! Even if you don't like her social views, this cycle is clearly about the budget.
