Naar-ehuka stretched and, after a short moment, opened one slate-grey eye. The other opened a short moment later, both glossy with the haze of sleep. For a moment the little one seemed a little dazed, as if she wasn't quite sure where she was. Then she felt the wriggling of the others beside her and remembered where she was.
With Ma in the den. Safe and sound. Yes, yes. With all her siblings, too, all the wriggling little pests! She gave a small yowling sound and pulled herself free from the tangle of bodies.
From here an arc of sunlight patterned the floor with a dazzle of gold, and, throwing a look over her shoulder, she padded towards it, admiring at how pretty it was.
Upperworld, she thought, would be beautiful.

Mwako'Nakama already knew that something was different between herself and her siblings. She admired their reds, and firey oranges that touched their pelts, even the silver of her mther coated their back adn paws and she felt a pang of jealously touch her young stomach. Her nose wriggled at the scent of the den, and she sneezed breathing in sand and stretched herself out. She was more sand than fire, and when her mother looked at her, some deep concerned sadness MwakoNakama didn't understand shined bright. Movement and she watched as her sister move forward, larger than she, tiniest, she was, different, but everyone else seemed so strong.
Silently she rose and pried herself from the bodies besde her, slate eyes glinting in the moening sunlight penetrating their seclusion in shadows. "What're you doing?"

One little paw extended, shivering with excitement. It moved into the golden light and she felt the warmth of it tingle her fur. She wriggled and took another step, suddenly intent on soaking up the strange heat that was not like the cuddling up with the family.
And then, a voice?
She practically jumped out of her fur, spinning to face whoever had snuck up on her. She lost her paws and toppled to the ground, left there struggling to find her paws again. And then she paused, looked up and blinked.
"Wha', oh, uh, hey, it's yoos, Pip-squeak." She blinked again, drew a little breath, and stood. "Nothin'." She answered, her face a picture of guilt. She had not been thinking of running out of the den. No way!
"Wha' yoos doin'? Being a sneek?"

Nakama watched her sister, and then looked to the protruding, invading light. So bright, she wondered if her eyes could take the heat on her pale orbs. She flicked her tail and crled it around herself, uncoiled it as if alive like a serpent, and stoof next to her sister, for reassurance, heat, a feeling of safety. "Heard you, a wonder momma hasn't woken up yet," the light seemed so golden adn pure as if magical, and anticipation heaved in her chest with a deep breath. Could the golden light, turn gold into fire? Would the light change her?
Her paws wriggled and shuffled in the sand. "I wanna see if it can...do you think the light can make me like momma?"

"She's all sleepy." Naar explained. "Cos of you, snorings all the time, prolly." She laughed at that but quickly silenced herself, clapping a paw fiercely to her maw. Then, "shh, no more noise." As if her sister had been the one to make all the racket in the first place.
She turned back towards the light and lifted her head and ears up. All the way up to where the entrance to upperworld lay. "Nah." She replied. "Ma dark. Not yella. Not yella like the light. Yella like you. Sorta." She turned back and wrinkled her nose.
"Your fur's weird. Too weird. Yous think you not Ma's baby?"

Nakama huffed and wanted to push at her sister's should with her paw but she knew she could be pinned easily. She dug her paws into teh sand and narrowed her eyes looking towards the light, "I'm momma's, I just don't know why no one else looks like me," she took another step, her toes touching over the line of gold and gray. Why did she have to be so different? Everyone looks right but her. She slid her tongue from the corner of her mouth and licked her lips, getting close to the edge. "Betcha you won' go outside."
Nakama was nervous though, she wanted to go out but no alone. "Come on, or you fraid momma will catch us?"

Naar would have shrugged, but decided on a small sniff instead. "You were last. Maybe those colours ran out 'fore you got borned." Either way, Naar didn't care to dwell on it too much. Some things could not be helped and if Nakama was going to be a weirdo forever, she may as well get used to it!
"Bet'cha I will!" She shot back. "Bet'cha I'll goes right now. Ma tired. Ma won't notice." And without a second's hesitation the little spark of bright-red was darting for the entrance as quick as her young paws could handle.
She felt warmth of her face. On her fur. Felt it spark something in her. A desire to see what lay up there? What created such warmth? Suddenly the den seemed suffocating and she needed to get out.

Nakama bit her lip and darted after her sister. She was smaller, slower, not the right color. How could she fix herself? She ran as she felt her heart thrumming, maybe there was somehting magical beyond the den that could fix her, beyond the seclusion adn doubt in her mind. She diddn't stop until she skid in the sand and looked up her jaw wide open staring up. It was so large, huge and burning bright, just as she was. It was red, it wasn't grey, it was golden just as the fur upon her back.
A smile spread across her maw and she reached up but it was far beyond her toes could reach and her ears folded back, "what isit?"

Naar's eyes weren't so much as drawn up, but away. She was blinded by gold. Such brilliant, vividness that she was startled into a state of silent shock. She didn't notice her sister coming up beside her, didn't hear her speaking.
Her breath came in little puffs and, suddenly, she felt as if she never wanted to go back to that dingy little den again. Here she was free! Free! She laughed, clear and hard, laughed until tears caught at the corners of her eyes. And then, in a bound of excitement, she threw herself at her sister, intent on toppling them both across the golden dust of the world.

Nakama suddenly had her vision interrupted by tumbling through the golden sea beneath she and her sister. Laughing rang in her eyes and she smiled but tried to push herself free from her sisters grasp, but gave in. Wamrth was on her back and thoughts surged her mind. If this golden light shown bright here cascaded over the earth and painted the ground gold, and her family was hear, she, could stay too right? Gold was a natural part of this place, her home, red and black and white was not limited, was it?
If they were the desert fire, than, the desrt was the spark that kindled the roaring flames of life here, right? She'd have to ask momma. "Getoff and shh momma will 'ear you!'

She liked to play-fight. It was her favourite thing to do. She was told that as she got older she'd have to watch how she used her claws and teeth. For whilst they were all but harmless now, they could hurt another as she grew.
Her? Hurt someone? Ha! Like that could ever happen!
She tried to set her teeth in her sister's ear when she gave that warning again. Shh? Ma would hear them? "You shh." She replied, brows knitting together in a frown. With a growl she rolled off and pulled herself up to her paws. "You shh your shh-ing!" She stomped a paw into the sand and lost her balance, pitching sideways and only just managing to catch herself.
"Right. Let's go then." A smirk scrawled across her face and she turned to head off, not seeming to mind that she could head into danger.

"But where, you shh! Wait, wait!" Nakama chased after her sister as she stood from their mini scuffle, balls of fire they all were, but fire could not be tamed so easily. "Cm'bak!" she whispered rather loudly, toppling over herself several times while chasing, the ground moved and was uneven, it was hard to get a steady pace going. What if they went too far? What if they got caught? Oh no, what if momma thought something bad happened and then they weren't there and something really did happe and what if...
"Wait stop! We can't, we don't know where is what!" she looked behind herself and saw that the gentle caress of the wind was already wiping their pawprints clean from the earth, a trick? "Letsgo back."

"Li'l scaredy! L'il scaredy! Dun' want no troubles!" She sang as she moved as swiftly as she could across the sand, paws stumbling, occasionally seeing her plunging face first into the sand, causing a sneezing fit. And - after what seemed an age but was only a few steps for an adult - she came across a red-shaped mound. It was...furry looking and...smelt like...lion! Lion!!
She bounced on her paws, practically squealing and then, without hesitation, threw herself at it, using her head as a battering ram against what must have been the lion's back.
"Rawrrrr!!!"
---
He was startled into wakefulness by a thump at his back. What was this? An attack? Mighty Uuo come to teach him a lesson for sleeping in the sun without keeping a mind to surrounding dangers? He felt his face heat up and he span to find Uuo's face, trying to come up with some explanation - He hadn't been sleeping! Really he hadn't!!
But where he expected Uuo's face to be, there was nothing and, after a moment of confusion, he lowered his eyes to find a red cub lying on her back, shaking her head.
And beyond her...
His eyes widened a little. What the heck was that?! And then, finding his voice: "You've got one second to leave before I knock you flying." He replied, grumpily, to the cub who had clearly thought it a good idea to strike him.

Nakama grit her jaw together and frowned at her sister. Why did everyone have to pick on her? At least it seemed that way. "Wait wait no don't!" but it was too late, she had hit something big and red (red how she wanted to be red) and it wasn't hapy. It was a big, red, mean male lion! He had a funny looking mane though, and she snickered at it. More importantly, he was mean,a dn was going to hurt his sister, she had to fight!
"Dun hurt her! You big, mean...half mane lion blob!" she darted forward paws outstretched but she tumbled and skid into his side, tears at the corners of her eyes from the sand in her eyes and nose.

Knock her flying? Ha! Like this stupid male could ever do that to her! Didn't he know who she was!? Clearly not! Stupid boy! She was aware of her sister coming up to defend her and, with another smirk, rose to her paws, feeling even braver now that her sister hadn't decided to turn tail and flee.
And then Nakama had to go and be a klutz.
Naar rolled her eyes and stomped her paw, shifting closer. "Yoos hurt me an' I'll bite your eyes out!" She replied in a matter-of-fact voice. "I'm Firekin."
---
Oh dear...where had these nuisances come from?! All he wanted was a nice sleep and now he was thinking it would have been better for Uu to catch him after all. At least Uuo was beautiful and didn't generally shriek at him like this one was doing.
"Get lost runt. Everyone's a Firekin around here. And most of them are bigger than you are." His eyes returned back to the other one. The one that was not red at all. "Except her. She ain't no Firekin. Just another runt. And just after we got rid of the last one, too."
The phrase; there's always one, came to mind. "Go find your mother."
