I've been getting a lot of movies lately, since Amazon features many to be had used in new condition for $5 or less. I'm going to talk about a few. Why? I don't know, people can always use a new good movie, right? These will generally be gun related, but not always.

Resident Evil Degeneration, it's the animated one that came out near the end of last year I think. The animation is very good (not up to par with FFVII Advent Children, but I don't think anything is) and it features plenty of zombie-killing action with a dash of gun porn and your usual thin Resident Evil plot.

Shoot 'Em Up, late 2007 I believe, featuring Clive Owen from such things as Sin City. The fact that in the first five minutes of the film he kills a man with a carrot and proceeds to deliver a baby during a gunfight is reason enough to watch this. Oddly it seems pro gun in some parts and anti in others. It's hard to point out examples without spoiling the plot, so I'll leave it up to you. But I'll note that I almost jumped with glee as Owen remarked about his finger "This is your most important safety" or some such. It's a mindless action flick, but it's excellent in that regard.

Paprika is an early 2000s anime film about a company that makes a machine that allows doctors to view a person's dreams to help better understand them psychologically, but someone steals it and starts wreaking havoc, leading to hallucinations and ridiculous dreams within reality. It's a little hard to follow sometimes, but never boring. Highly recommended.

Transformers Revenge of the Fallen is still out in theaters. It's a lot of stuff blowing up and robots killing each other Matrix-style. Sometimes there's so much going on at once it's almost hard to keep track. See it in theaters if you want to see it, though, it demands the big screen.

Leon the Professional is from 1994 or something but I just saw it twenty minutes ago. It's a professional hitman that takes in a young girl (Natalie Portman in her first big role) after her family is killed over drugs. I don't know much about good acting, but I believe it's featured here. It's not an all-through action romp, but I wasn't bored during it once and some great guns were featured. I first knew of this movie when reading a guide on Resident Evil 4 where someone mentioned the Matilda handgun was a reference to the movie. Matilda being the name of the girl Leon takes care of and a gun used by RE4's Leon. But I had to see it after an episode of Shooting Gallery where part of its ending was placed as their 9th best gun movie action sequence.

Now I've got The Getaway, So Close, Millenium Actress, and final Fantasy the Spirits Within coming in the mail...

Oh yeah, and I've been playing Bioshock. I know I was going to get Fallout 3, but Bioshock was $13 on Amazon and I've been wanting to try it for a while. I think it's great so far, with good gun choices. The pistol is a Webley Mk. 6 in .38 and the submachine gun (incorrectly called a machine gun) is a Thompson. The shotgun seems to be one made for the game, but someone can educate me about that. The wrench is just a wrench.

Degeneration didn't have much zombie fighting action. In fact all the real zombie fighting was done and over with half way through the movie then the other half... well yeah. I won't spoil it. Anyway it an ok movie. It actually gave my older sister nightmares. xd

The Professional was pretty good. Jean Reno is on my list of favorite actors. I give it the seal of approval.

I finally saw the original Rambo movie. It was pretty good. That guy that plays the sheriff always reminds me of my grandpas friend Carl. The resemblance is uncanny.

I also got Titan AE on netflix yesterday. It was pretty good. biggrin

War with Jason Statham and Jet Li. I think it was a 2007 movie--another one I wanted to see but missed. Got to watch it last night and... it was okay. Basic plot is an FBI agent (Statham) wanting revenge for his partner's death at the hands of an elite assassin (Li) situated in the Japanese mafia, whose claim to fame trademark deal is using titanium-cased DU bullets, for some reason or another. His gun looks to be a P99 and the casings look to be rifle rounds, so I don't know what the hell's going on there, but anyway, it watches like an episode of Law and Order. I was expecting more Jason Statham Transporter-style awesomeness, but didn't get very much of that. It's really about the plot. And the motives of Li's role don't even seem to make sense until the end, at which point the movie seems cooler, but you've already spent an hour and a half trying to catch up.

Final Fantasy the Spirits Within is from 2001 and was apparently a major box office bomb, but I don't see why. It seems to have all the trademarks of a winning sci-fi experience with great visuals and mostly interesting characters. The facial expressions and voice work do well to make the characters come through well rather than stale and robotic, and there's a decent amount of alien phantom blasting that reminds me of Xenosaga in the way the aliens work and the locales. I actually like the movie a lot and quite recommend it, especially since it can be had so cheap now. If you missed out on it you ought to pick it up. I would have see it already but my main reason not to was that it had nothing to do with the games (it doesn't) but that doesn't keep it from being a good movie. Plot-wise it was better than Advent Children, but that's not saying a lot since AC didn't even have a lot of a plot, just a trickle of one left from the game. Not that I didn't like it--I thought it was a great movie, but the plot left something to be desired.

Yeah, I watched the Professional two or three days ago.

Yeah... she goes nearly batshit insane.

I heard the director or some crap wanted a sex scene, but the parents denied of course.
Or was it a shower scene?
...
either way,
wtf

Millennium Actress, by Satoshi Kon, the same person behind Paprika. It's about this girl that ends up keeping a key for a man as he runs from the Japanese government for being an anti-government radical or somesuch and show's the girl's life through the films she acts in. The way its told is a bit distracting, abruptly jumping from one film locale to another, but it's a nice story. I bought it Japanese with subtitles, I'm not sure if it's available in English or not.

So Close is a Hong Kong action movie about two sisters that inherit their father's super security satellite that basically lets them see anywhere in the world and use security cameras to map out buildings. They use it to be top notch assassins. But one girl's desire to leave the killing behind and an investigator looking into their latest hit makes things interesting. There's som great fight scenes, though one near them iddle looks pretty staged. The opening part is great and there's a fine sword fight at the end. Well recommended for an action flick with a passable story.

Death Note: The Last Name is the second part of the two live-action movies made to encompass the Death Note story. I saw the first one in a theater around me but missed the second one. I think it actually works very well, capping off the story near episode 28 I think. It ignores the Mello and Near arc and changes the Yotsuba Group to another person. But the ending actually is a bit more tight than it was in the anime. I enjoyed it thoroughly. No idea why Rem's voice actor was a man, though.

I loved BioShock when I played it, though I wish I hadn't bought it. It was great but very short.

Also, if you haven't seen it, watch the new Rambo movie.

The Getaway with Steve McQueen (not the 90s remake) laid out the framework for running-from-the-law movies. It starts out a bit slow, but will grab your interest quite well given a little time. And there's no crap guns used, either, aside from a single TEC-9, but its user is killed off clean and easy. There's a plethora of police revolvers, a Colt Python, 1911, and what's probably as Remington 870 later used by McQueen's character. Some good shooting scenes and car chases balanced between the escapades of the wandering money suitcase and the pudgy Mexican with his hostages. Well recommended.

Full Metal Jacket I'm sure you all know. I'd seen it once before, but references of it on the guild today made me want to see it again. During one scene I was thinking to myself, "Don't they have any M79s they could use on that building?" and no sooner than does some guy whip out an M79! Also Vincent D'Onfrio of Law & Order I noticed in the credits. Must be Gomer Pyle. Wikipedia says yes. Anyway it has the Gunny in it, and if you haven't seen it already you should now.

I always think that if I were to enlist in the military I would end up like private pyle in a couple of days at most. I can't handle stress. What really annoyed me is when that saw gunner sprayed the place then as he lowered his gun they played surfin' bird. For some strange reason it seems like only one other guy in my school saw that movie. We would swap FMJ quotes and nobody else would understand them. He did that whole "is that you john wayne" thing and I replied saying that he could come over to my house and ******** my sister. My sister not getting the reference got very pissed at me. xd

On a somewhat related note I wonder why the military just stuck with the M16 in nam even when it was proven to be a worthless pile of garbage. We would have just been better off sticking with the M14.

My word is Poontang.

They shot a building with an M79? ... don't remember that.
I do remember the Baldwin unloading an M60 on a building.

M14 was a bit unwieldy and only had a 20 round magazine.
Granted it's 20 rounds of awesome.
But, these are the same people that thought switching from .45 LC to .38 was a good idea because they could carry more of it.

I'd think the opinion of the soldiers whos lives depend on the weapon would be more important than some armchair general. Sadly we all know that common sense and logic are two important things that our government is incapable of comprehending. Having some issues with handling the weapon is much more desirable than a weapon that will most likely jam when you need it properly functioning the most.

Yeah, I suppose.
So what are the soldier's reviews on it?
