So im wondering... I've heard everyone respond to "Salam alaykum" with the same response...... So since thats what im used to, i've done it too... I was speaking with my boyfriend the other day and he informed me that he had recently learned that, that is actually a wrong response... If i remember correctly, he said that its supposed to be "Wa alaykum salam rahmatullah barakatu" (there are so many spellings.. i apologize if i spelled it wrong. >_<) I did a little bit of reasearch too and I've found the "appropriate response" as being "wa alaikum assalam" (from www://islam.about.com/od/glossary/g/gl_salaam.htm?p=1) So my question... Are both correct? (my boyfriends version AND the one from the site) If both are correct, is it still appropriate to say the shorter version from that website? If neither ar correct, please let me know through here or PM.

Giving salam is sunat. But answering a salam is wajib.
It's either both the long one or the short one.
In Malaysia we spell it Assalamualaikum. =P And replied with Waalaikumsalam.
Or we can still use the longer one. But I usually heard the long one during formal occasion. But it doesn't matter. ^ ^
But the one who give salam get more deeds.

Assalam Alaykoum .. I just want to say that here , in algeria , wa said the both , the short , wa alaykoum asalam , and the long , wa alaykoum asalam wa rahmat allah wa barakatouh !!
There is no differance , I think xp , but it is more appropriate to say the long one !!

Parawhore Amani Why is what necessary? Saying "salam alaykum"? Making a ******** ritual out of a greeting. It just seems a little bit stupid to consider saying "hello" to someone a matter of God's judgement.

And why does it need to be more ritualistic than that? Why must you say a magic word to bless someone rather than simply expressing the idea? Why won't "May God be with you" suffice?

Again, my point wasn't "You shouldn't wish blessings on people". it was "You shouldn't have to consider only specific magic words correct ways of wishing blessings on someone".
