Kich never thought he'd be so grateful for shade. His fur hadn't completely thinned yet, to compensate for living in the desert, so mid-day could be killer. And Kich tried to spend it in the shade as often as possible. It didn't help much...but it helped enough. Especially when he pressed one side against the part of the rock that didn't get sunlight...In fact...
He sighed in relief as he did just that, making himself comfortable in the shade of a rather large boulder. He didn't need to be on duty yet, and he'd already had his morning of keeping himself in shape. So he could afford a little bit of cooling off.

To a Firekin born to the desert, the heat was welcome. Kosuke welcomed it, at least. The sun beating on his red pelt, his black mane... It made the scars across his back twinge now and then, but he still welcomed it.

As he rounded a rock, he stopped, finding a curious sight. A lion, in the shade... The adolescent stepped into the shade, frowning at the lion. "You must be one of them... The new blood..." It could be the only reason the lion was in the shade.

Kich opened one blue eye to look at the youth in front of him. He was probably near Kich's size, with the way pure Firekins grew...and he looked rather unhappy with the once-rogue. Ah well. The Firekin had been an insular lot for a long time. There would be those who did not welcome rogue blood.
"I am. Kichomo'damu is my name." He shifted a bit, so he could better meet the eyes of the younger lion. "And you?" He wanted to get to know his pride mates. He wanted to know who shared this home with him.

"Kosuke." He looked the lion over, taking in every marking. What unusual marks... "Isn't there a task you're supposed to be doing...?" As far as he knew, all adults had jobs, and all adolescents were preparing to take on one of those jobs. After all, that was the point of apprenticeship - To take on a task as an adult. "Unless you're too hot in the desert..." He let out a snort, stepping around Kich. "Me, I'm not bothered one bit..."

Kich raised a brow. "My shift doesn't start yet. Else I would be on duty, discomfort or no." Kich took his job seriously, and didn't mind the heat so much when he was on duty...keeping a watch for threats was distraction enough from the heat. "I will finish acclimating soon enough. Until then..." He shrugged. No need for words there. His gaze showed no annoyance, though he did find the youngster...trying. "Not all are born to the desert that belong within it. I was only born on the borders of it, and have finally been allowed to live within her proper."

Kosuke eyed the other lion, still wary of this... New blood... "And how do I know you'll remain loyal?" If his visions didn't want to center on Shula so much, he could probably see that.. He took a step closer, giving him a dangerous look. "What's to stop you from trying to kill one of us pure bloods? Or even one of the half-bloods." He gave a snort, circling around into the sunlight. "Red or not... I don't think you're a Firekin." He paused, ears going back a bit. They DID need new blood... "Yet."

Somehow...Kich had expected he'd eventually get 'questioned' like this. "You don't know. And truthfully...I don't care if you think I am Firekin or not." He didn't really. The Regents knew he was Firekin, he knew he was Firekin. "I wil serve my pride whether others think I am worthy of it or not. This is my home...And she has my loyalty, no matter who thinks I am not one of hers." He loved the desert. The sand, the sun, the dry winds...somehow, all of its harshness was welcoming to him. "Though I suppose it is a good idea to care about the opinions of others, hm? I'm just not used to others yet."

Sneering, the adolescent motioned a paw out at the desert. "And how long can YOU survive out there without water? I'm no adult yet, but I can say I've gone a week without it." He then shrugged. "Of course, I've been told repeatedly that while we live in a harsh desert, there's surviving on little water, and then there's being stupid..." Mostly, it was the old male that was somewhat close to the Regents in rank. He raised an eyebrow at Kich. "If you can go that long with no water, or go longer... I'll call you Firekin."

Kich raised a brow. "Honestly, I never measured. I just know that on the way here, there were times without water, and times when I found water." The time between his mother's disappearance and his arrival at the borders was a little blurry for him...it was a time of excitement and anticipation and questioning himself. Had he searched long enough for his mother? Yes, he'd decided. The way she'd left...she'd known she was the only thing holding him back.

"And what value would come of you calling me Firekin? Those who matter to me already consider me such." The Regents. Little Zii. Iirte. And the desert herself. Hmm...that was a small number. Perhaps it wouldn't hurt if there were others among it.

"Quite a bit of value." The adolescent circled back around the adult. "You may claim the name Firekin, but a lot of the pride is made up of those of us who will see you as a filthy-blooded rogue. It takes a lot to prove to us that you're worthy, and just marching in and winning a fight isn't all there is. Can you hunt a Gemsbok on shifting dunes? Or chase down a desert hare?"

"I claim only what has been granted me. What I have fought to earn." His eyes were fierce with this, despite his apparent calm. He watched the adolescent with those eyes as he stood, his bulk that of any true-blooded Firekin. He thanked his mother, his blessed wonderful mother, for that gift. "These things you speak of, I am learning."

He smirked. "Though it makes me wonder in turn...how well would you survive on the edges of these lands? Places where the ground turns rocky, where green begins to become more common than white and tan. I was told the Firekin do not measure worth by blood, though blood can certainly be important, so long as it is not concentrated too much. I was told that a Firekin was measured by their strength. Strength of loyalty, strength of body, strength of mind, strength of resolve." He settled his stance, in case the other wanted a fight. He didn't particularly like the idea of a fight with someone younger than he, but he knew better than to underestimate those younger.

"I am learning. And one day, I will not need to learn. The Fire of the Desert is in my blood, whether my mother or father had it or not. And I will NOT deny Her call."

Ears folding back, Kosuke glared at the former rogue. "You may have the strength, but you will NEVER have the blood Finar-si gave to us! Neither you nor ANY of the rogues that come wandering in!" With a huff, the adolescent turned hurrying off. One day, he hoped... The traditions would return, and these filthy rogue and Pridelander bloods would be put back in their proper places. One day, he hoped..

Kich settled back down, moving to groom himself and try to remove more of the underlayer of his coat. If the fool boy wanted to believe that keeping to only a few bloodlines kept a pride intact, than so be it. HE knew the foolishness of it. And so did many others in the pride, including Kidondo and No.
