L died so that the story could move on passed that back and forth nonstop wit battle, and then Light died so that the series didnt turn bad by continuing so long some like some series.
Thats what I think.

Because the writer had to kill them off for the story plot. Just like Namoi, she knew to much way to fast and if the writer kept her alive, then he would have been introble with the plot.
Just like L, he was in the way as well, that or they just wanted to shock the readers, witch it totaly did to me! I cryed. cry
But Ratio had to die because he was the main "Good" and "Bad" guy. They bad guy always loses, and justice will prevaile! heart

It's all about the balance of power:
1. Near+Mello
2. Light
3. L
4. Near
5. Mello
When you consider this, it's obvious how the series has to end.
