So, I'm in the market for a .308 rifle in the next 6-18 months. I'm hoping for someone of a "designated marksman" rifle, something that can make 10" groups at 1,000 yards. (If I do my part, of course.) A rifle that can take 10-20 round magazines, is semi-automatic, and won't cost my college fund. An AR-10 fits this criteria very well.
Now, normally, I'd just buy an M1A because I love them oh-so very very much. However, I can't afford 'em. So, I'm screwed when it comes to that. sad
So far, I've narrowed my potential purchases down to two rifles: The DPMS Panther LR-308:
"Barrel: # 24" Length # 416 Stainless steel bull barrel # 6 grooves, right-hand 1x10 twist, button rifled
Chamber: # .308 Winchester
Method of Operation: # Gas operated rotating bolt
Bolt & Carrier: # 8620 steel bolt carrier, heat treated and plated per Mil Spec # Phosphated steel bolt, heat treated and plated per Mil Spec
Sights: # None (mounting optics only)
Weight: # Empty - 11.20 lbs.
Length: # 43.5"
Upper Receiver: # Thick walled, extruded from 6066-T6 aluminum # Hard coat anodized per Mil Spec and Teflon coated black # No dust cover # Snag free design, smooth side look # No shell deflector # No forward assist # Right hand ejection # Raised Picatinny rail for easy scope mounting
Lower Receiver: # Milled from a solid billet of 6061-T6 aluminum # Hard coat anodized per Mil Spec and Teflon coated black # integral trigger guard # Aluminum magazine release button # Standard AR-15 trigger group
Stock: # Standard A2 Black Zytel Mil Spec w/trap door assembly
Handguards: # Standard length ribbed free float tube." The RRA LAR-8 Varmint AR-10:
Now, I like the 26" barrel, aesthetics, and magazines of the LAR-8, but I really don't know which one is more accurate. That's the deciding point for me- the one that can make 10" groups at 1,000 yards. So, anyone know which is the better buy? HAHAHA, DISREGARD THAT, FRESNEL SUCKS c**k.
FRESNEL SHOWED ME THE M21:
NOW I'M GOING TO HAVE TO SAVE UP FOR YEARS BECAUSE I CAN NO LONGER COMPROMISE FOR ANYTHING LESS.
THANKS A ******** BUNCH, FRES.

I'd still go with the LAR-8. Aside from the fact that I prefer RRA and I dislike the lack of forward assist, dust cover, and shell deflector on the LR-308, the -308 also has an integral trigger guard and "standard AR-15 trigger group". I'd bet that's single-stage, and you're not gonna like that. The RRA match trigger is what I have in mine... it was so light that it was removed for nationals, because it was out of spec. Crisp as hell... it's everything you could want from a trigger. All other things being equal, the LAR-8 also has another two inches of barrel. Consider that the M16 with a 20" barrel has a service range of 800m, but the M4 with the 16" barrel has a service range of 600m. That says that those two inches should roughly be another hundred yards of range. The forward grip on the LR-308 has no checkering, while the LAR-8 has checkering with incredible grip.
But everything but accuracy aside, the only difference I can see that changes anything are those extra two inches of barrel, and those WILL make a difference.

Shrantics Pretentious Ego Freak_090 Hold on... Although the M21 is clearly an amazing piece of machinery, there is no reason to spend soo much on it when a custom built AR10 platform could offer you the exact same if not better results and be tailor made to fit you in every way, shape, and form while still costing less. Ultimately, you will end up spending about as much on the scope for a 1k rifle as you will for the rifle itself if you actually want to hit anything so you better start saving... I strongly recommend slowly and carefully building your own AR10 rifle. For any advise there is always ARFCOM. Custom-building an AR-10 costs a LOT more than custom-building an AR-15, mind you. You actually end up spending more money to put an AR-10 upper/lower together, rather than saving money like you would with an AR-15.
Be that as it may be, a AR10 can be built to out preform the M21 for equal or lesser value, and it will be uniquely yours.
