Golden eyes searched forward. He had gotten away again! He grinned in satisfaction. His mother couldn't keep him inside the den forever, he needed to get out and see his pride, his home! Most of all, he wanted to see his father. He flicked his tail, white seeping into cream and pushed the fur atop his head out of his eyes. His mane was not thick and proud like his father's yet, but one day, side by side, he would stand tall!

He rubbed his paws together in the sand and looked around him, unsure of which way to go. What Fen'wei should have done was see which way was towards the borders. He gulped, but figured he would find his way, wouldn't he?

His small form, white and adorned with cream stripes resembling his mother's markings, his father's warmth and love, he smiled and headed in one direction.

He had tried to roar out to his father earlier but, he couldn't yet, it came out as a garbled murr.

"Which way did he go now?"

User ImageIroh was on his way to visit his little family, after spending some time in his usual spots and finishing his morning routine. He was padding slowly, his large frame moving effortlessly over the sands. He could make this trip blindfolded, really.

He hadn't meant to bump into one of his children on the way over, though.

Blinking in surprise, he saw a familiar creamy color moving over the sands. He caught scent of his son in the air and padded toward him, tilting his head in wonder as he got close.

"What are you doing away from the den, little one?" he asked, smiling. He imagined the boy was probably coming to find him. Moving up to him, Iroh nuzzled the cub affectionately. Sure, Iroh believed in training them, and making them the best, strongest lions they could be for the pride, but that didn't mean he couldn't dote on them.

"Father!" Fen'wei called affectionately as he saw the large form of him coming close. So he was out wandering, ha! He would tell his mother later how good of a tracker he was, yes, and that he was going to be the best there was. "I was looking for you dad!" he crouched low and looked both ways, his tail swaying behind him, "I wanted to go out with you today, but I had to sneak away from mom, don't tell her though, it's a secret," though Fen'wei knew his mother would find him sooner or later.

"Daaad," Fen'wei fell onto his rump and ruffled the fur atop his head with his tiny paws, "Don't let the other warriors see you do that, they would think us weak!" he spoke in jest and grinned.

Crouching down again Fen'wei jet one of his paws out to touch his father's and pulled it back quickly, "So where are we going to go huh?"

"Were you? Well, you certainly found me," Iroh grinned. He shook his head though, taking on a chiding expression.

"You shouldn't slip away from mom like that, though. She'll worry. It's always better to be honest. I'm sure she would have let you come out to find me. We'll work on your manners, though, in due time." He watched his little boy, then looked up at the sky thoughtfully.

"I'm not sure. All this talk about not wanting to look weak in front of the others. I guess the good thing to do would be to train a bit, huh? I'll give you a couple lessons today, if you're up to it. And I'll explain to mom that it was my idea. Just this once, though. After this, and I'm going to let you get in trouble."

He smiled warmly, playfully nudging the cub with his nose to knock him over before padding a few steps away. His big paws took him a good distance from the much smaller young lion.

"Manners, huh," Fen'wei huffed, turning his nose up from the ground, puffing his chest out, a cheesy grin on his face. "Who needs manners when you have strength," he strut in a circle, and looked at his father with wide loving eyes. He had the best dad ever, he was sure. He grinned, crouched down but was pushed over by his form.

"Of course I'm up to it!" he wiped his nose and stood, chasing after his father. His paws were so tiny in his father's prints in the sand. Would he ever get that big?

"What are we going to do? Take down a zebra, an antelope? heard stories about a big thing with two horns that stick out! We could get one of those," Fen'wei adored stories, and hoped one day, he would have his own epics told about him.

"You need manners, if you want to have any strength at all," Iroh said, poking his paw at Fen'wei's chest, to deflate him a bit. He had paused to let the other lion catch up, smiling at him warmly before walking near him, his pace slow but a good match for the little one's size.

"I don't think your mother would approve of me taking you any where near the big thing with two horns sticking out," he laughed, shaking his big head. He sighed.

"No, I think we'll go to the water, and I'll teach you a bit about hunting, and maybe some other things."

He hummed to himself, walking beside his son, feeling content.

"You do need to focus more on your behavior, of course," going back to the comment before, "manners are very important. As is knowledge. Being calm, collected, polite: structured. Not everyone is looking for a fight, and not every situation calls for claws and muscle strength."

"But DAD," Fen'wei sighed, almost falling over when his chest was poked, he had to work on his balance. "How will I get any respect if I have manners but no strength behind it," he didn't understand. Flicking his tail he walked with his father, trying to look regal and strong while keeping balance which was not easy walking as he was. He gave up after a few strides and jumped periodically, pretending to pounce.

"The water," he sounded disappointed, but perked up, "Hey Dad, can you swim? Have you ever gone swimming? Is it fun? Someone was talking about it the other day I don't know what it is..."

"I'm not saying you can't have physical strength, son," Iroh said, smiling. He walked with a casual ease, not holding his head too high, but he didn't really need to. He had a natural elegance about his rotund frame, and it came from never trying to make it appear. He looked at his son, shaking his head.

"I can swim, yes," he said, nodding slowly, "I've never had much reason to, but when I was your age I used to play with my siblings in the water. Before we got yelled at for it, anyway." He laughed. "You have to be careful where you swim, you know, depending on how much water is in the area, and where it comes from. You could hurt a water source if you're not too careful."

He hummed thoughtfully, leading the way to a big watering hole. He knew it would be okay for his son to play in the water here, if he wanted, which was why he was heading in this direction, anyway.

"I can show you how to swim, if you'd like." He grinned.

Fen'wei followed his father closely, letting his paws test the sand underpaw. He was not the largest, but he wasn't the smallest either, but looking at the difference between his father's and his own paw prints in the sand put it into perspective.

No wonder they tell cubs to stay away from the borders until they are older, for fear of rogues.

He was so small compared to everything, which made Fen'wei want to get stronger, faster.

"Swim," Fen'wei's eyes were glowing with anticipation, "Yes, please! Can you show me? Please dad, please?" begging as if his father would change his mind.

Iroh chuckled at his son's exuberance, nodding his head. Swimming was a healthy exercise for a young lion, and though there weren't many water sources where they could get away with swimming without lowering the quality of the water, they could get away with it here.

"I'll show you! I said I would, and one should always keep their word, to the best of their ability. I don't have any reason not to show you, I guess you're in for a lesson."

He grinned, still laughing, and then made to pad into the water. He didn't really have the option of getting in too deep, his paws able to touch the bottom easily, but that was okay. It was deep enough for the cub to learn in.

Floating, he kicked his paws and did a very simple paddle, just to show Fen'wei the basics.

"You know when you jump sometimes, and kick your feet to go faster? It's like that. Walking or running through water. I'll help you if you think you'll sink, but the best way to learn is to try."
