I have an idea for a suit of armour (this is for a space faring military, by the way):
First we have the under suit. I want this to be made of something that'll contract like muscle when an electrical current is applied. A microscopic computer would sense the wearer's movements, and move the suit accordingly. The idea of this is to have the soldier wearing a giant artificial muscle that'll both amplify his/her movements (increasing strength and speed a good deal) and bear the weight of his/her equipment so that the soldier can carry an enormously heavy load without breaking a sweat.
Next, we have the armour. Now, if a soldier wore that suit as is, it could cause injury. The suit needs to be have a frame supporting it to avoid this. The frame is made of the same materiel as the armour itself, and the armour can be quickly detached from the frame if necessary (in order to get to an injury to treat it, for example). The armour is a sandwich of soft armours that absorb force (such as this jelly stuff and a fabric similar to kevlar, but stronger) and hard armours that deflect force (like industrial diamond [In the future, this stuff is cheap and easy to make artificially, and highly common (Much more so than metal, in fact.) for military use. It's way cheaper and much more abundant than metals, but not heavier, and it is much stronger.]), and is very effective against a wide variety of threats, though it is pretty damn heavy (Not that the soldier can tell with the under suit bearing the weight in his/her place.). The suit has a helmet which is made of the same materiel as the armour, along with a high strength plastic face piece (It's shaped like a T), and a self enclosed breathing apparatus. This breathing apparatus normally takes in air from the atmosphere and filters it, but oxygen tanks can be attached to the apparatus for use in vacuums or atmospheres that lack oxygen. We round this out with a pair of cameras with a zoom range of 1x to 160x, as well as infrared and night vision, that can display images directly onto the faceplate. Link these cameras with your weapon (a gauss rifle), and you will never need an optical sight on a weapon again. Your helmet handles zooming for you, and even puts a crosshair onto your faceplate if you so desire. Oh, yea, the helmet can also can amplify sound if you want it to, improving your hearing. Plus, it has a comm link and can download and display images (including maps) and video on command. Oh, did I mention it's climate controlled? It can heat you up or cool you off, depending on the environment.
Finally, this suit of armour has one more trick up it's sleeve: it can sense a bleeding injury to the wearer, and respond by staunching the bleeding, applying painkillers, and calling for medical assistance, all by itself. How awesome is that? Not only will the suit bear the weight of your equipment load, protect you from enemy fire, allow you to breathe in hostile environments, increase your strength and speed, aid your vision and hearing, heat and cool your body, and provide a communication link with the rest of your unit, it'll even provide life saving first aid and call for help if you get shot.
