The scraggly bush became a tree in Leyak’s mind. Twisted and burnt under the squinted sun, its roots writhed in the fractured rock of a slight rise. Its branches, thickly covered with withering leaves, stretch outward from the rock, overhanging a well traveled bit of path. A few long hairs were caught in the lowest branches where a few larger males had passed under it. It was perfect.

Leyak hadn’t met any lions outside his immediate family yet, and he hadn’t wandered so far away from the den to meet any. He was expecting one of his brothers to come looking for him, and as he unsteadily worked his way up the bush’s – no, tree, he was a hunter in a great tree – bent trunk, he grinned in anticipation of springing the trap.

The bush wobbled a little more than he expected, and it took a while for him to find a decent spot and position to drop from, but he eventually settled, green eyes flashing in excitement.

Burilda was once again doing what she thought she did best; tracking. Which for the most part involved her chasing after a lizard a snake or a hare; hoping that she didn't lose sight of it becuase otherwise she would no longer be able to 'track' it.

This time she was sticking closer to the pride then on usual terms; which meant that the current prey she was 'tracking' was a bunch of lizards. And they ran a lot faster than her; so whenever one dove under a rock; she ran after another. At least one of the good things about this was that she was getting faster; but she wasn't becoming the expert tracker that she thought she would be.

She let out an irritated little growl that she thought was the great beginnings of a roar as she went face first into a bunch of pebbles trying to snatch up a lizard. She shook her head and pawed at her face anxiously trying to get the visible dirt off of it; lest her mother should see her and try to clean her out in the open! She looked down at the pile of rocks that showed quite clearly where she'd face planted in discontent; and raked her small claw across the clear path with frustration.

She sighed and sat down for a minute; closing her eyes and breathing in; trying to catch the smell of something else. Until she smelled blood; fresh blood. She looked down towards her nose; thinking it was her... even though her nose didn't really hurt. She was happy to see it wasn't; but what then?

She looked to the side and smiled widely when she saw it was a lizard. Not the lizard she'd dove for... but no one had to know that... She bent down and grabbed the limp body between her teeth; dangling it proudly. Wait till Xi saw this! She thought to herself as she began to walk away... in the opposite direction of her den.

From time to time the bush wriggled as Leyak grimaced and shifted position, but it became still once he found a reasonably comfortable position. His head laid on a cross section of branches, gazing down his nose to the obscured ground below and wondering what was taking his brother so long.

Maybe, his mind idled, he would never come. Maybe no one would. His gaze lifted slowly, etching out the line of the horizon between the trees. In a moment of apathetic passivity, his imagination stretched to disturbing and abstract thoughts. Maybe no one would come and he’d be alone, and then he would leave the tree and walk toward the horizon. He couldn’t see that far, and he wasn’t sure he would really still exist beyond this small world that he knew. From his “tree” he visualized his form walking past the pride boundaries. Maybe he could still exist out there beyond the edge of the world, but something would be missing. He would surely be made less in some way. Frowning, he glanced toward the volcano in the foreground of that unnerving horizon. That. Were he ever to leave, he would be without the connection to the stark mountain and the power it imprecisely represented.

In that unfocused moment the cub felt a strong urge to stay away from the boarders, and before he could attempt to confusedly understand the dreamlike idea, he heard a scuffling.

His ears snapped to attention and he was once again in his claimed tree, anxiously waiting for his brother to arrive. Maybe two of them had come and were playing as they searched. He tensed, smirking again as he anticipated ambushing them when they came close enough. He twitched anxiously, every tiny moment being entirely prepared to hurl himself down on the first dark patch of fur he spotted. There! He leapt without hesitation. “HAH!”

Several things went wrong. First, his pounce became a slip that fizzled his courage. Second, it became apparent halfway down that his target was not one of his brothers. And third, the ground was much further away than he’d anticipated.

Burildas head snapped up the moment she heard the branches move. She'd been on edge, a little scared of the thought of things coming to get her ever since she'd accidentally traveled outside of the prides borders and nearly been snatched up by a hyena. And when she heard the "HAH!" She screamed a rather girlie high pitched scream and ran for cover; dropping the lizard in terror.

Unfortunately; rather than running out from underneath the thing that was coming to get her (she hadn't quite focused as to what it was she'd just naturally assumed it was terrifying) She scrambled for a few seconds; her feet not quite being able to get purchase with the gravel; and then she jumped slightly; slipping once more; and landing square underneath where the thing was going to get her. She scrambled the best she could but she was so scared in that moment that she couldn't quite get her little paws to move.

In the next instant though; none of that really mattered; becuase the thing landed on her and she was certain that she was done for. Front paws met her back and she was pushed slightly into the ground by the weight of the thing. But it was the lack of a great amount of weight that made her realize the thing attacking her... wasn't really big. She opened her eyes and twisted herself to see what exactly had jumped her... IT WAS ANOTHER CUB D<

'congratulations~ quite the brave lioness you are.' the voice cooed to her in an extremely sarcastic tone. Which made Burilda angry; and she usually doesn't let her voice get to her like that; but she'd been extremely scared of some stupid boy; and now she felt extremely foolish. If lions could blush she would be. "GET OFFA ME!" She yelled squirming out from underneath him. Her tail fluffed up and her fur stood on end making her look slightly ridiculous for her size but she thought it made her look terrifying. "What are you doing jumping on lions you don't even know?!" She asked her voice slightly quivering from the after affects of the adrenaline rush she'd just had.

((Your last post was so adorable XP))

More preoccupied with falling than pouncing, Leyak rolled off easily with her squirming. He was was one of the smallest of his litter anyway, and had no mind to cling and play with the ringing in his ears just now. Having been rolled onto his side he shook his head foolishly to clear the dizzying stupor and finally looked at her.

Whatever fear he’d felt from falling, whatever trepidation that held him when he realized he’d jumped a stranger, whatever panic that seized his lungs on impact, dissipated entirely when he made out her dusted, poofed fur. And her tail! The green shock of fur was only stranger.

A gaping grin split on his face, suddenly followed by a gleeful laugh as he pushed himself to his feet. “Look at you!” he exclaimed, ignoring her question. “Hah, I scared you stupid!”

(I totally just realized I'd forgotten a picture D8 and thank you XD she's a keeper <3 and her vocab is gonna get bigger and her thought process a bit more advanced once she's older XD )

"YOU DID NOT!" She yelled back; trying her hardest to make her fur fall back down now that she knew her mommy had only been playing with her when she'd said it was scary... but it was scary when her mom did it... maybe she'd just been doing it wrong?

"I was just surprised..." She finished off lamely looking away. She looked back at him eyes narrowed slightly. "You were scared too!" She claimed; hoping it was true. "I could smell it cause I'm a great tracker!" She lied through her teeth sitting up a bit straighter.

She hoped that if she made herself sound convincing he'd believe her and not question it; or at least stop making fun of her. Her small tail twitched back and forth in an irritated manner. She didn't like being scared; it made her feel stupid; and she especially didn't like other lions knowing when she was scared. Especially not stupid boy lions like him who had probably never even been out of his mommy's sight yet, and who probably didn't even know how to track or hunt ANYTHING yet! D<

She looked away again and then down at the ground. She pouted upset with herself now. "At least I don't go around pouncing on lions in the demon pride. How stupid can you get?" She murmured. More out of a hurt ego than trying to be mean.

((And Leyak won’t always be such a blatant jackass, but for now they’re cubs and it’s amusing. =P ))

Leyak had, in fact, been startled, but he didn’t care for her knowing that and lifted his chin at the accusation. “Why would I be scared? It was my ambush,” he stated. It didn’t make up for the fact of the thing, but the words were confident enough to protect his pride.

Still, he felt a little uncomfortable about her embarrassment now. He only had one sister among his horde of brothers and he usually treated her well when he wasn’t avoiding her in some cruel game that only the young can formulate.

Luckily his eyes drifted before he had to consider any real feelings of guilt. “Did you kill that?” he questioned, distracted by the lizard and went over to sniff it curiously.

"I dunno... maybe you're just a scaredy cub..." Burilda replied; more of a murmur now rather than a statement; a hesitant accusation. Had he planned to ambush her? Who ambushed people you don't know? Honestly! Didn't he know you were supposed to ambush others in groups? Like when her and her sister would ambush her step father Xi (and by ambush I mean he let them think they sneak up on him.).

But when he asked about the lizard and sniffed at it; she was happy again! 8D she thought she'd lost the lizard! "MY KILL! YOU FOUND IT!" She shouted bouncing around excitedly; pushing at him with her front two paws playfully. "I thought I'd lost it under all these rocks and stuff but you found it yay!"

She trotted around in a happy little circle smiling to herself. "It took me forever to catch that!" She told him honestly before sitting down and a lazy sort of stance. "Do you hunt things yet?" She asked interest clear in her voice.

Leyak twitched at her sudden excitement and watched her closely as she bounced about, only partially drawn in by the energetic burst. At least it didn’t seem she was going to reproach him any longer.

As far as kills went, the thing looked meager compared to the blood he’d seen around his mother’s face. He’d seen this sort of lizard before and was impressed that she’d caught it, but he wasn’t sure it really compared to the meatier smell of a larger death.

“Hunt?” He knew the word, but he glanced up at her from the lizard with enough uncertainty in his expression to answer her question. “No. My siblings and I mostly do battle.”
PostPosted: Thu Feb 25, 2010 8:52 am

"Yeah hunt!" She said laughing; her eyes sparkling slightly with humor. "It's something all lions have to learn! my mommy told me so!" She said nodding her head becuase obviously her mother was knowledgable on all things and who on earth would question her?

"oh..." Burilda replied; her lips pursing together as if she was trying to think of something for a minute. "I geuss that's just as good!" She responded nodding her head as if it realy mattered in the first place. "But I can't battle my sisters... two of them don't live with us and the other one... well i don't want to battle her!"

She looked down at the floor for a minute and then raised her head again to look at him with bright eyes. "Is it fun battling?" She asked a small smile on her face. If it was then maybe the two of them could battle. She was always looking for ways to make her look better in her mothers eyes. Or to make herself seem more feirce in her own.

Leyak began to wonder if most girls talked this much. It wasn’t unpleasant, but he was having an interesting time connecting all her varying topics together when she switched between them. He would have to learn to hunt one day, he supposed, though he had the feeling it might be from other lions like this female rather than his mother. For now, however, he didn’t mind explaining battling to the green cub. Unlike her dead lizard, he knew how to go about it without feeling foolish.

“It’s fun, but that’s not the point,” he chided lightly. “The point is to win. You want to make your opponent hurt and become stronger yourself. If you just want fun it’s a lot better to just watch a fight. I like ordering my brothers’ fights. I just tell them when to start and declare the winner.”

((Sorry about the huge delay.))
PostPosted: Tue Mar 16, 2010 12:44 pm

"Oh." Burilda said simply. Trying to think about how that worked... did that mean when she killed a rabbit she was battling? She did hurt it after all... right? How much fun could you get from hurting someone that was in the same pride as you though?

She thought about it long and hard looking at the male cub before her; when suddenly she wanted to test out if what he was saying was true so she shot out her little paw and smacked him on the side of his face. "HEY! 8D" She said laughing slightly. "That IS fun." She wondered if he knew how much fun it was as well if all he did was sit and watch the fights... Burilda bet it was ten times as great if you were in the fight and actually won it.

Leyak flinched at the strike, not expecting it. He blinked, green eyes flashing like strange fire for quick, angry moment, then lighting with challenge. This was his other wicked side. The first like the manipulation of watching other’s fighting when he set them up, liked the delicate control over other’s strife. The side now curling Leyak’s mouth into vindictive glee was pleased to be crossed so foolishly. “Yeah?” he asked wryly, but didn’t wait for an answer. He pounced instead, throwing his front legs around her neck in as fierce a hug as a fluffy cub could manage and tried to latch onto her ear with his dainty teeth. He was one of the smallest of his litter, and younger than this female to boot, but he was feisty and anxious to prove himself.

Buri let out a squeal as she was suddenly pounced and she felt his weight on her. She let out a giggle and tried to roll to gain the advantage; getting her legs up between the two of them like she'd seen her mom do with her dad when they play fought. She tried to pull her ear out of his mouth when he started to bit on it; used to it when she played with her sister.

She pushed at his face with one of her paws; more at his cheek really since she couldn't get a good portion of her paw squarely on his face. She laughed at the fun of it all; at being able to fight and not get in trouble; or not be scared. It was fun~ a lot of fun really! She wondered why she hadn't done something like this before!!

She tried to growl at him but only got out a small cubs yowl. She'd have to work on that if she wanted to be seen as fierce...

The seriousness with which Leyak had pounced her faded after their scuffling sent up the first plume of dust. Her giggling was infectious, and he grinned, accidentally letting the ear slip from his mouth as a paw went into his face. He kept his shubby, babyish arms around her neck though, until he stumbled from the odd positioning and fell to the ground. He tried to pull her down with him, even though she would have been on top. It was better than letting her get at him from a standing position.
