The sun was high and when it shone so high the shadows were near invisible, this was the best time of day, when the shadows wouldn't suppress him, the best time for roaming about and except for other lions, most of whom were asleep during the midday sun, this was his safe time.
His scraggly mane, which always seems to hold some sort of debree no matter how often he sat to untangle it, which was becoming less and less of late, he spent more time making sure the shadows weren't out hunting him than he did grooming.
Certainly since he had come to this pride, and changed his name, the shadows had become worse, more suffocating, closer than ever but he felt safer, being amongst the pride, some of whom he trusted, he felt that the shadows were less dangerous, lurking at the corner of his eye, always there, waiting for him to be truly alone, which he never was, he was no longer a rogue, he was in a pride now.
Settling down in the centre of the beach, the deep orange lion closed his slightly cloudy eyes to the world. He knew there were no shadows out here, he was alone and safe from the cast off of living and dead things. He smiles lightly, the sun warmed his cold fur and pushed away the aches and pains of his rheumy bones and muscles. For now he was safe and alone, as long as everyone else was asleep and the sun was high, he was alone.

Hmph. With a sigh, Jura wandered from her trees again. Something wasn't making them too happy, and she couldn't quite figure out why. The birds seemed okay, the wind wasn't too bad. She just hoped that nothing scary would happen to her best friends. Jura didn't know what she would do without them!
The ocean was a safe bet for now. She hummed to herself as she walked, feeling the soft, salty air dance around her as she left her paws shift softly in the sand. She loved the sand for how it held the sun's warmth, though at this time of the day it was always just a bit too warm. She moved quickly, intent to tap her toes in the water to cool them off before finding a place to relax. As the water tickled her paws, she noticed the old yellow lion was relaxing on the beach as well.
A sly grin grew on her face. Well, well, look who was here! She had to tease him a bit, even if only for a short while. The opportunity was presenting itself, and she was going to grab it.

Possibly, he was a little deaf but the more likely reason for not noticing the green lioness was that he was paying far too much attention to the sound of the sea. His eyes closed, he was enjoying the warmth of the suns rays and the lack of shadowy menace which usually lurked all around him.
His ears twitched at the sound of the shifting sands but rather than turn to find out what it was, he assumed it was the wind or a crab, or a random silly bird, nothing important or with a scary enough shadow for him to react to. It seemed pridal life was making him soft, he could forget his worries while the sun shone high.
Unfortunately it seemed his worries were about to begin, int he shape of the lioness he had been his usual rude self to on their previous meeting, the one with the suspicious shadow!

She grinned wickedly. Oh, this was going to be too fun. She could figure out how to make it up to him later; it wasn't that she hated him or anything, he was just too easy to scare. He was also quick with his temper, which only made her have more fun with the idea the closer she god.
"Hey old man," she chirped, plopping herself down right next to him. She wiggled a bit, letting her belly warm up in the soft sand. She was acting like everything was perfectly normal, even if it wasn't. She didn't know him well, knew that they didn't get along, and certainly wasn't the best at conversations with other lions herself. Oh well.
"Didn't think I'd see you again so soon," she said casually.

If he had been younger, he probably would have raced away at her first words, but his old bones just didn't do race, or even jump, it took time to wrangle his muscles in to action and get them to take him any where, so instead of jumping he let out a string of curses and looked at the bright green lion with wide eyes.
"Crazy girl, are you trying to give me a heart attack?" He grumbles, his black eyes fixed n the bright green female, though they flickered down towards her small shadow. Thank the gods for the high sun.
"I'm fairly sure I made it clear to you that you should stay several feet from me, you and your, your shadow." He grunts tilting his head towards her diminished darkness. "What could possibly make you interrupt an old man getting some sun hmm?" This sort of tactic had worked for him before, guilt the young ones in to leaving him alone, especially those young ones with extra long shadows.

Jura snickered. This was too much fun, especially when he almost instantly lost his temper at her. Surely she had never had this much fun before he came along. Playing games was fun, but he played back just so well.
She giggled playfully. "Perhaps, but the sun is so nice! And you looked so lonely, out here all alone on the beach," she purred. "Besides, we're not close to any of the trees this time; are you sure you didn't mix my shadow up with the trees?" She game him a wink, though she wasn't sure if he'd be able to catch on that. No matter, she was having fun.
Hopefully they wouldn't get interrupted too soon, she wanted to have a little more fun with this.

It seemed that she was not to be guilted with the old man tactic. Damnit. Why was it that he managed to attract this crazy girl to him? A low grumble rumbles through his chest and he mumbles some obscenities under his breath looking down at her tiny shadow, it wasn't so scary out here, he could easily sit and not be attacked by her darkness.
"Yes I am sure it's you, you have a very foreboding shadow, look at it, all dark and creepy." he grunts contemplating standing and moving away towards the rest of the pride but out here on the beach, there were no shadows. It was a conundrum, should he continue to be harassed or should he chance the more shadowy dens?
"'avn't you got better things to do than cause an old man grief hmm? You and your shadow should go play with your scary trees, you clearly belong together." He snorts squinting as she winked at him, why did she wink? "What was that? Were you giving your shadow a signal to attack? You're very suspicious young lady!" He grumbles, his nervousness growing, he couldn't run from here, the sand was too soft, his muscles were too withered and his bones were too arthritic. "Your shadow can't hurt me while it's little you know? it's weak, I'll crush it!" He looks at her wide eyed though she was still sort of blurry even with his eyes wide open, he was trying to sound confident, but his old heart beat a couple of extra beats at the the thought of trying to squash that most frightening of things.

Ohoho! Jura was starting to feel a little guilty. Only a little bit! And so she would change the tune of her song just a bit, so hopefully he wouldn't feel quite so overwhelmed. She didn't want to make it hard on him, enough so that she might get in deep trouble over harassing him. She was just brightening up his life a little! With her 'dark shadow', anyway.
"My trees aren't happy," she grumped, being a little more dramatic than she needed to be. "Something didn't make them happy...." She peered over at him, mimicking him as best she could. "Maybe you upset them! Since you don't like me, you went and made them mad at me!"
She glanced down at her shadow, wondering if she could make it attack someone. That'd be something, but instead it just sat there, following her ever move.

Rai grunts a little, moving to try and look more relaxed, he really couldn't take all of this he had to calm down, to remember that her shadow was useless in the full light of the sun.
"Humph! I doubt I could upset your silly trees, they are all shadow and darkness and leaves, they are very upsetting I try to avoid them." He snorts looking the green female over she really wasn't that scary, but her little dark shadow was certainly something to worry about.
"You er, promise to keep your shadow to yourself?" He grunts shuffling away from her just a touch "If you promise to keep your shadow in check you can stay here, but don't be spectin' no sympathies from me with your silly shadowy tree nonsense, I'll be steering right clear of them if they are in a bad mood, you probably didn't talk to them right you know? You ain't told them to come get me have you? Trees have big shadows and they are definitely out to get me." He nods sagely and rather nervously at the thought of those long, dark shadows creeping up to get him.

Jura huffed. She felt like he was trying to push her buttons, at least in regards with her friends, the trees, but she didn't want to let him know just how far under her skin he was getting. She took a moment to compose herself, pushing up a little pile of sand between the two of them. "There, now my shadow can't go past this line," she purred, though it'd get more difficult when the sun started it's descent for sleep.
She paused another moment, wrestling with the idea of him and the trees. They were harmless~! She knew this for a fact. Not everything that nestled themselves within their branches was nice, and perhaps that was the reason why Rai hated them so much? So much speculation, but Jura didn't want to bother to ask.
"They'll be nice," she said. "Especially if I'm around. Unless...they're full of birds, but then they're too busy chatting with them to care about anyone else around them."

The old scraggly male looked up at Jura curiously, had her taunting changed to kindness? "You'd look after me in the trees?" he asked, cautious with his questions, he wasn't really sure if he trusted her, even if she was offering him a sort of off hand protection.
" I like it out here, theres no shadows can get you on the beach." He grumps relaxing a little now that there was a barrier between them, even if that barrier was a very flimsy one and would in a short enough time cast a shadow of it's own. But sand was a dead thing and didn't attack, like rock it was relatively harmless as long as it wasn't hiding anyone or anything else.
"Up there in the trees, it's too dangerous for an old man like me, much safer with the rocks and the dead." He grumbles casting a glance at the very brightly coloured lioness "Your problem is you're too alive, you need to be more dead, you'd be safer to be around that way." he nods very slowly, he was starting to relax though he knew that with the sun moving off on to the horizon he would have to move soon or be bombarded with more annoying young alive lions with their larger, much more dangerous shadows.

Jura looked mortified! How dare he say that she be more dead~! "Bah, perhaps I'd be more dead if I didn't eat much," she grumbled, "But that would ruin my good looks!" And while Jura wasn't a very social or flirty lioness, she was proud of how she looked and didn't want to be an embarrassment to her family looking all scraggly.
She huffed a bit, wondering if he was doing this on purpose, or just that was how he was. Death was really that nice? A twinge of curiosity came over the lion, and yet she shoved it right away. No, she was happy being alive, even if that meant being annoying to this grouchy, silly old lion.
"I'd think the trees are more dead than me," she shrugged. "They can't move around, like I do, at least. Still...they're not bad, but they can be more quiet if I around." Maybe.

"Exactly, you clearly eat too much and you're very brightly coloured, your shadow is all the shadowey-er because of how shiny you are, be less bright and more dead and you'll be fine." He nods a very sage nod, he clearly believed every word he said as truth and gospel and he couldn't be swayed with 'good looks' he didn't care how others looked as long as they had less dark things following in their steps.
"oh trees are sneaky, they move when you aren't looking and they make lots of noise with their canopies of leaves. They are full of suspiciousness, you know they are out to get you when they rustle just when your back is turned on them!" He sits up very straight as his lat words, almost shouting the phrase, she spoke to the trees, surely she knew they moved about when you weren't looking?
"Silly girl, you're clearly too young to understand what trees are properly. You just stay in your shadowy places and get more dead and come back and see me when you're not so glowy." He creaks slowly to his paws then, every bone in his body seemingly cracked as he struggled to his paws, his old rheumy joints warmed by the sun still jostled as he managed to get himself completely upright.
He paused for a moment and looked back at the shocking green lioness flickering his tail "You just be careful in those trees, they could be telling you lies and you'd never know it, trees are very sneaky, thats why they have such long shadows." Perhaps this was concern on his part, though it could simply be a word of caution for her half hearted kindness or even for her bullying, who knew, he just had to say it.
"And tone down your fur colour, it hurts my old eye holes." He grumps turning towards the shore his bones and muscles loosening with every stumbling step he takes.

Jura stuck her lower jaw out. Hmph! She didn't growl, but she sure did want to take her frustration out on something. She knew that her trees didn't go walking around. Sure, some of them had really big branches, and if they grew a little too close to the beach it was easy to see the roots.
She watched him leave, and waiting until his back was turned, she stuck her tongue out at him. Hmph! Jura didn't really have anything to say back to him; she was going to keep herself right dandy and pretty. And, well, she didn't really want to get closer to death, either.
What a strange lion. Jura shrugged her shoulders. She'd probably avoid him now, what with how much more she knew about him. He'd get along better with the older members of the pride, anyway.
Picking herself up, she shook off some sand and plopped back towards the trees, wanting to hang out with them. She needed a little pick-me-up.
