He blinked his eyes and wriggled his way out from his mother's embrace, trying his best to escape the confinement of the den without anyone noticing. This would clearly prove to be quite a task, seeing as the amount of siblings he'd also been cursed blessed with.
Even still, Nur'yu was going to give it his best shot.
He stepped over a few of his siblings, being extra careful to move slow and not---
--Whoops!
His hind paw landed straight on one of his sibling's tails. Not good. Not good at all! With a small squeak he raised the offending paw immediately, freezing in place; comically balanced on three paws. He really needed to get those pesky paws under order so that they didn't keep letting him down like this!

Nyimak had been happily in dream land. She was curled up with all her siblings keeping her warm, and was having the most wonderful dream! The exact details were lost on the little cub, but upon finding her tail stomped on, the bliss of sleep was rudely shaken away. Jerking, Nyimak reflexively bared her teeth and pulled her head up to glare at the offending source. Her own tail swished in irritation at the offense, and bright red eyes tried to focus on the awkward looking brother near it. Licking her nose, the smaller female was both curious and annoyed at Nur'yu, trying to figure out why he was standing in such a ridiculous pose and where he was going so early in the morning!
He almost looked as if he'd been caught red-pawed in the act. . .which he had been. Clearly no one else was around to run over her poor tail in such a fashion.
"Nur'yu," she half-whispered, half-hissed, clearly not much of a morning cub. Still, she kept her voice low as she realized everyone else in the den was still quite asleep. "What are you doing?" The demand came, even as she herself began to squirm around so she might face her brother and get to her paws.
There was no use going back to sleep now. Not with everyone else unaware of their going ons. . . Besides, she really did want to know what her brother was doing and where exactly he planned to sneak off to. She was going to go with him, regardless if he wanted her company or not.

A flash of white teeth illuminated in the gloom as Nury'yu gave his sister a somewhat sheepish grin. Busted!! Damn those paws! Now he'd woken her and...if she started speaking then she might wake everyone up and he'd never get to go out and play in all the pretty gold stuff outside.
Luckily it seemed she had enough sense to keep her voice quiet and, at her question he blinked and, realising he was still balanced, settled himself back onto all fours. "Shh-hh-shh!" He pressed a paw over his own snout to pass the message on as clearly and quietly as he possible could. Ironic that him trying to 'shh' her probably made more noise than if he had simply replied in a quiet voice.
"Nuthin'." He replied, putting on his innocent face that...well, had really not worked from the word go, really. Nur'yu was many things, but an actor he was not. Even the most unobservant person would be able to tell that he clearly had been up to something!
"Was just...um...practising..." Uh...practising what, exactly? "My, uh, sneaky skills." He grinned again, more confidently this time. "Need more practise, don't I?"

Nyimak gave an ear a dismissive flick as her brother shushed her. She wasn't entirely impressed and she herself wondered if he wouldn't wake everyone as he tried to frantically silence her.
Boys.
Or maybe it was just her brothers? Either way, she got all the brains. . . even if she were on the small size of the litter.
Still, she wasn't angry or upset and even gave herself a little stretch as she listened to him play off his escape. The winged cup took her time to reply, carefully arching her back before leaning forward and delicately giving herself one final good stretch.
Yeah . . there would be no sleeping or napping. Not even if Mother awoke and demanded they curl up back to sleep. Grinning up at her brother, she shook her head. "You were not practicing sneaking. . and even if you were, you definitely need more practice! Besides, cubs only sneak if they don't want to get caught or don't want someone to know what they're doing. . . so what are you really doing?"
Nyimak questioned him again, tilting her head and moving forward so she was almost up in his face. She wore a small confident smile, knowing full well he was caught and he couldn't exactly get away with not telling her. She'd find out one way or another. . . and right now he was surrounded by sleeping siblings! He had no where to go, clumsy paws that he was.
Ha. Take that. Sister 1. Brother 0.

Woah! Was she like, a mind-reader or something? How could she possibly tell that? He blinked, opened his mouth to reply and then promptly closed it again. What was it with girls and that all-knowing, thing? It seemed like Mother had that, too. If he was lucky, it was just a trait of his family and not like...a general rule that girls always knew. Otherwise that would totally be unfair! Who wanted to live in a world where you couldn't get away with anything!? Not him, that was for sure!
He blinked, pulling his head back as far as it would physically go so that he could put a bit more distance between their faces as she closed in on him.
Well...she had him there. He guessed he might as well fess up and hope that she didn't go calling for Mum or Dad rather than risk her telling anyway if he didn't say anything. She wouldn't really do that, would she? No...of course not.
"Fiiiiineee." He whined, setting his rump down moodily. "If you really wanna know so bad." Then, lowering his voice, he leaned a little closer. "I was gonna go up there." He waved a paw towards the entrance of the den. "To see the gold stuff." He huffed quietly to himself, blowing the tuft of fur up and out of his eyes briefly. "I suppossseee, if you wanted to come...you could." Better she come than tell their parents and ruin everything, right?
Right.
"So, whaddaya say, Nyimak?"

The close distance didn't bother Nyimak, but then if it did she wouldn't have gotten so close to begin with. Even as he pulled his head back, the crimson and black faced female hardly flinched and she purposely lifted a paw to begin grooming it.
Cool and composed in her self-confidence.
Still grooming her paw, very purposely, the little cub hid a smile as her brother relented. Mwahaha! She had gotten him to speak the truth and now was going to find out his secrets. This was a good thing for the little cub who honestly was curious about what he was going to do, where he was going to go. . . "Up there?" She whispered, forgetting about cleaning her paw and looking towards the entrance.
They weren't really allowed to go up there, at least not usually by themselves. And if they got caught they might get lectured or even possibly in trouble. Still, Nyimak wasn't worried about falling in to disapproval. . . curiosity was burning in her gaze and the talk of gold stuff was intriguing. She'd seen the stuff too, now and then, but she'd never actually gone to look at it all alone.
And since Nur'yu was her brother (and a boy) and not an adult, he really didn't count. A bright smile appeared on her features and she rose to all fours herself. "Ooooh. . . . can I really come? Yes, let's go see this gold stuff. . . Assuming you can navigate without tripping over anyone else!" She added teasingly, stifling a giggle and dipping her head.
"I can go first if you want," she added proudly and a little boldly too. Maybe she could give him some hints on how to walk without tripping. . though honestly, even Nyimak wasn't that great on her big paws. She was just as clumsy, if not more so, than her brother.

He watched her carefully, uncertain to what her reaction might be. Brother and sister they may have been, but they were new in this world and hadn't known each other for long. He had yet to learn how to read another without them saying something or pulling an obvious expression.
She seemed...interested, maybe?
Hopeful, suddenly, he nodded in response, turning partway to glance up towards the entrance, longing there on his little face. Wouldn't it be totally amazing to go up out there all alone? With no parents to watch over them? Wasn't that sort of what they were supposed to do? Being Firekin meant being strong and brave and this was proving both of those, wasn't it?
Besides, even if they did get caught and in trouble, they'd be the envy of the rest of the litter, right? That had to be worth it! And, if they didn't get caught, they could brag about it and gain fame that way! The young explorers, Nur and Nyi! The envy of all the youngsters in the Firekin lands!
And then she agreed and he leapt back up onto his paws, bouncing eagerly, his eyes wide and shining with anticipation. "Dun worry about me, I think I can manage the rest of the way all right." He stretched each paw in turn as if to prepare himself for this test of great and amazing skill.
"Right, let's go before one of the others wakes up and ruins everything!" But, with a small sniff, he put on his 'determined-face' and wriggled a little as if he were intending to pounce her. "No ways, this was my idea. You follow me!" And, with a small squeak of delight, he turned and bounced his way across the rest of the den as fast as he possibly could, steering well clear of any siblings that were between him and adventure.
And, upon reaching the slow incline that led up to the land of gold, he braced himself, pushed down hard on his hind paws and propelled himself up towards freedom.
"Keep up, sis!" He called, trying to keep his voice quiet but somehow failing in his excitement. In fact, he had no idea how close or far his sister was at that point and simply assumed that of course he was going to win this little race. Boys always beat girls in this sort of thing, right?!

With Nur'yu's excitement, the little sister couldn't help but find her own heart beginning to race. Oooh, soon they'd be away from their entire family and be up that incline and out where all the gold stuff was! This was actually going to be one great adventure!
In part, though she'd never admit it, she was glad that her brother actually stepped on her tail. She'd hate for him to go alone and she'd especially of hated to woke and find he'd managed without fail. No, she wanted to be there too, to see all this gold stuff. So long as Mom and Dad didn't spoil their fun. . . .
"Well then hurry on with it, Nur," she encouraged, snorting softly as he dismissed her as a leader. Hmph. She'd let him lead this time only but maybe she'd show her bravery when they actually got to the gold stuff! And then. . . then he'd have to follow her.
Following her sibling, she was quick to hop around the rest of her family and as soon as Nur took off she was quick to follow. His own excitement could be felt, especially as the den began to incline up towards the great light outside. As he encouraged her to keep up, she couldn't help but giggle as she scurried as fast as her paws would let her.
She really wasn't far behind but she did her best to follow. "Look Nur'yu!" She breathed, not allowing herself to hesitate even as they reached the entrance of the den. The world was so bright it was almost hard to see thanks to the darkness of the den. If Nyimak hesitated at all, it was only to give her eyes time to adjust. . . she was not scared of the gold stuff or the world outside.
No.
It was just blindingly bright!
((*laughs* I don't care who you have 'win' the race to the entrance. . . She is kind of small though so she might not have made it first.))

"I am hurrying." He insisted and, putting on an extra little push of speed, burst free from the confines of the dark den. But he was going too fast and his front paws clipped a rock he hadn't had a chance to see.
He flipped head over heels, sliding along the sand until he came to a halt, lying on his side, covered in gold. For a moment he wasn't quite sure what had happened. Had he won? Had he lost? Had he made it? What was this stuff covering him? Why was it so hot?! And then he realised he was lying on his side, slightly dizzy from the spinning from paws to the ground and, somewhere close by his sister was calling for him to look.
"Wha--?" He blinked, trying to find her, but the light hurt his eyes. Why did it huuuurt?
The rest of his words came out as a small mewling sound as he struggled to gain his paws again, pushing himself up onto the unstable ground. Then, determined not to look like a right baby (although that attempt was probably in vain) he shook the sand from his fur, sneezed loudly and tottered off towards the cub-shaped blob in his vision. Luckily, it didn't take long for his sight to clear and when it did he finally got to see the outside world properly - not hidden behind the huge forms of his parents and no distractions from other scuffling siblings. Just him - his sister - and the wide open world.
"Hurts my eyes." He complained after a moment, his tail waving. "Feels weird on my paws." How did their parents walk so easily upon it when it moved so fluidly like that? It was hard work!
"How many other lions do you think there are?" They were probably too young yet to have been told a great deal about the pride. But, they weren't alone, that was for certain.
Senses on overload, Nur'yu stumbled forwards a few steps, leaving dragging paw marks in the shallow sand as he went, not sure really what to do now that they had made it up here, where all the gold shone beneath the sun.

Nyimak was in no better shape than her brother. As she too burst from the den, she found her paws sink in to the soft gold stuff. . . It was hot to the touch, especially as she moved further from the shadow of the den, and she too struggled to keep herself from tumbling. Everytime she thought her paw was settled, the sand would give away and she'd slip down or slide upon the soft gold granules surrounding her.
It was quite difficult to walk. . . and the brightness! She felt blinded for awhile, blinking away, trying to make sense of this great world. Slowly, ever so slowly, she caught sight of her brother. . . . Or at least heard him. He was making a ruckous as he tried to get himself to his paws and his thrashing form wasn't hard to find. "Nur'yu," she called out, half-whine, half-concern.
Boys. They just couldn't do anything right, could they?
Still, she wouldn't admit that her eyes hurt too. . . And the sand was a bit too warm for her taste. She was so used to the comfort and coolness of the den that the sudden heat of sunshine and sand were a bit startling and uncomfortable. "It is kind of different. . . I like it though." Of course she'd go against what her brother had to say - if it was weird against his paws than (even though it was weird against hers too) she wouuld enjoy it.
"It is a little slippery though," she admitted with a small mew, even as her paws slipped out from under her and she slipped softly down a very slight sand hill. "Not at all like the den. . . " At his question bout lions, Nyimak went thoughtful for a few moments. She honestly had no idea how many were out there. . . .
"Oh I . . . I bet there are a bunch. We'll even get to see 'em someday too!" For that she was certain. Nyimak knew there were other lions. . . she'd smelled them on her parents from time to time, though she was still young and honestly wasn't entirely sure who or where the scents came from. But for how many. . . that was anybody's guess.
All the while, the young winged cub was trying to make her way back up the hill to where her brother was. It was a lot more difficult, and while she didn't want to complain or whine or come off as weak, gravity was working against her. As was her age, her big paws, and her newness to walking on sand.

Still covered in a dusting of gold, the dark-pelted lion with the marks of his father on his sides, moved up to bump against his sister, shaking his head a little. "Course you like it. You're weird." He stuck his tongue out at her and batted a paw in her direction.
Then, he giggled a little as she slipped down the hill and thought that actually it looked like it could be quite a fun game. Perhaps it could be made better if they found a bigger 'hill' to play on. One of those huuuuge ones out there, maybe? He gave a few experimental bounces and turned in a circle so he could get an all-around view of the landscape that was lying just outside of their home. There seemed to be a few potential dunes close-by, in fact. Perhaps when they were bigger and less likely to get in trouble, they could give it a shot.
"Much bigger then the den. Much more exciting!" He chirped agreeably.
"Do you think they're all like...big and scary? Mum and Dad can be scary sometimes and they're our parents!!" He sat heavily in the sand, giving a small sigh of relief as his eyes gradually got used to the light and the dull-ache began to fade away. "Come on, Nyimaaaak, can't you do it? Want some help?" He gave her a huge grin and, leaping back up onto his paws, he threw himself down the incline after her, spraying sand and tumbling clumsily as he went.
"Watch out!" He called.

The sand was still a very unusual sort of feeling beneath her paws; it was odd that she could sink in to the earth and still slide down the hill. Everytime she scurried back up it was as if she couldn't get a good grip and only slid back down. It was frustrating. Especially that her brother had no problem and was sitting higher up than her now!
Hmph.
She'd show him.
Not allowing her frustration to fest, Nyimak focused on his words instead. "I bet they'll all be big like them," she added, focusing on her words and trying to carefully romp back up the sand dune. "But maybe not as scare. Hopefully not. Guess we'll find out someday," she added wistfully, desiring the day she too was as big and as strong as her parents.
Unfortunately, her brother had to ruin her daydreams by offering to help and then running down the dune and kicking up sand and dust everywhere! "Nur'yu!" She growled but realized there would be no stopping her brother. In a tumble of sand and grey fur, Nyimak had no choice but to try to leap out of the way. Unfortunately, she was rather clumsy in the sand herself and didn't quite manage her pounce. "Eeeek!" The force of her brothers descent, plus gravity, and clumsy cub paws made her a perfect target.
Unable to leap to the side, Nyimak threw herself backwards and instead went rolling the rest of the way down the small dune. this was just great. . . . stupid brothers. A whole lot of good help he had been!

He couldn't help but laugh at the panic on her face and in her voice as she tried to escape from being tackled by his rapid descent down the incline. Luckily, he was slowed towards the end when he lost his footing and ended up rolling over and over until he reached the flat and his rounded body would not go any further.
However, the act had thoroughly covered him in sand and the sneezing fit that ensued shocked him. The grains tickled his nose and he sneezed and sneezed until his lungs burned in his chest. After a moment he clapped a paw over his nose in an attempt to stop it, but the sand on his paws only aggravated the condition.
"Ughhhhh!! Help! He~elpppp!" He whined, his ears folding back against his head. "Sand in ma nooose! Mama!!" He crawled on his belly towards where his sister was standing, snuffling and weepy. He couldn't breath when his nose was clogged with tickly sand!
