Looking back on this moment, Rap would not be able to understand how he had kept going. Whether it was his fear, shock, or just the simple need to survive, he couldn’t tell. But, whatever the reason, he managed to keep on his paws, struggling across the sands on three good legs and one injured one. The pain was beyond anything he had ever suffered and after a time he gave up counting how many times he stumbled and hit the ground.
His body was trembling from the effort and yet he refused to just lie down and wait for death. He had made that mistake a moment ago and Hakan…
…Hakan had lost his life.
Despite himself a shuddering sob broke free and he wrenched himself onwards, moving erratically across the sands. And as he went, all he could think of was Hakan’s attempt to save him. The life leaving his blue eyes. Going…going…gone forever. Another lion so dear to Rap, stolen away. Hakan had not been related to him by blood, but he had been a father to him. Someone he trusted. Someone he had grown up with. Hakan had passed on his fighting knowledge to Rap and thus he, in turn, needed to pass it on. Hakan would live as long as Rap kept his teachings alive.
He comforted himself with that.
But the bile and anger towards these treacherous lions still burned, perhaps stronger than ever.
First they had killed his mother, murdered somewhere in these lands. His golden brother, with her, too. Oddly enough, thoughts of the nameless cub had been squashed, perhaps because they were even more difficult to bear than the loss of his mother. And now this. Now they had taken Hakan. Why not him? He’d rather be dead if it meant that Hakan could live!!
He pushed those thoughts away, determined not to give up. Determined to at least try his very best to escape. If he could live to fight another day, vengeance was always a possibility.
He raised his bloodied, torn face and, charged blindly onwards, too afraid to look back in case those two firekin were hot on his heels. He wouldn’t be able to fight him off and they certainly wouldn’t be prepared to drag him back. They’d kill him on the spot and that would be that. His life, young and vibrant, would be snuffed out with little effort at all. His mother would be turning in her grave.
So he pressed on, pushing away pain in an attempt to increase the gap between him and his possible followers.
If only...if only he had known that these lions had not killed his mother. If only he had known that his golden brother still lived. If only Hakan’mawasii hadn’t agreed to this plan.
If only…

Zii had slipped from the den with one thought on her mind. She needed to find Rowtag. She needed to talk to him, ask him why. Ask him how he could have betrayed her. She wanted to spend her whole life with him, to have his cubs and to carry on life together. How could he have lied. She had done a quick search around with the intent of not being seen. She didn't want to be seen like this...
Like this being that hot tears rolled down her cheeks.
She had finally gave up on trying to find him in the pride and decided to check the borders. She had taken a familiar path, one she had met him on many times before. She found no sign of him.
"Rowtag..." She cried out, her voice rattling her sorrow and defeat. She lowered her head, ready to start another cry when she caught scent of blood. She lowered her nose, seeing the drops on the ground and lifted her head, scanning. She stood, golden orbs narrowed at a figure she did not recognize. She began to advance his way, noting his injured stance. He wasn't going anywhere too quickly.

He heard the sound of a name being called. Not his name, for no one but Hakan had known it. Well...there was another but he...wait! That was his name? Someone was calling for Rowtag?
Panic momentarily froze him, his stance listing to one side as he turned to throw a glance over his wounded shoulder. The scent of his own blood would be strong. It would draw attention just as his paw prints in the sand would. But that mattered little when a lioness was just there, in plain sight. And if he could see her, well she could obviously see him.
His vivid eyes stared at her, bright white against the sand. A ghost, perhaps? Was he dead? But no...of course not. Why was he thinking such stupid things? She was a firekin and she was looking for Rowtag.
He needed to get out of here.
With a snarl, he attempted to move on, his pained, limping walk becoming more and more of a hindrance to him. Who she was mattered little, but he at least needed to try and escape despite the fact that such a thing was looking less and less likely...

Zii noted the reaction of the stranger and wrinkled her nose. She has a sneaky suspicion that this wounded male was wounded for a reason. She narrowed her golden eyes, increasing her speed. It wasn't Rowtag but if it was one of the rouges, he was not leaving. She would make sure of that.
"Hault!" She shouted, running now. She was a guard but she could keep him subdued long enough for the others who were most likely stalking him to reach them. She started to near him, and she could see the extent of his wounds. He had to be one of the rouges.
Was Rowtag injured in this way as well. She swallowed the lump in her throat. "You are too injured, you must stop or you will die!" She said as she neared, slowing her pace. He wasn't going far

"Stop or I will die?" He barked back, infuriated now that she was trying to order him around. It would have been better if she'd just attacked him and been done with it.
He snarled. "If I stop I will die. You best turn around now or you'll end up regretting it." He'd never felt so angry and grieved in his entire life. This was perhaps worse than his mother and brother's own death, for this had all happened because of him. His need for revenge. His desire to do nothing but return here and get justice.
He increased his pace, doing his best to ignore the pain and get away from that white female before it was too late. But he would not stop, no matter what. He would crawl if he had to.

Zii recognized his voice easily. The look on her face showed it. It was one of the rouges... she knew it. She stood staring at him, her golden eyes adjusting to his face. His wounded face. This was one of the males that may know where Rowtag is. "Where is he?" She snarled, her white fur standing on end. He had to know. Was Rowtag hurt?
"Where is Rowtag... I know you know where he is!" She felt prickling heat crawling across her spine. "You are one of the rouges... I recognize your voice... you were there on the dunes.. conspiring about my family... my parents..." She stood her ground ."You will stop because you are going before my family to get your proper punishment!"

He paused, glancing back in surprise at her question. Where was he? Where was who? A moment later and this unspoken question was answered. Oh yes, Rowtag, she'd been calling his name before.
"I care little for where that vermin is." He spat, blood-flecked the spittle gathering around his jaws. "And if you know he was involved, then all the better. He'll get what he deserves, that spineless rat!" He snarled anew, trying to move around her.
"Get out of my way, fool, I mean it. Do you really think I'd got back willingly? You think I'll walk to my death without a fight? I'm a Firekin! I fight. That's what I live for!"

Vermin. She felt the prickly heat again. How dare he say such things about Rowtag. Even though she had heard for herself his words and knew he was a traitor... no one could call him such until she confronted him herself! She took a step forward, growling low. "Shut your mouth heathen... You know nothing of being a Firekin... You do not know the sun and the sand and the rule of a good ruler." She said angrily.
She stepped in his way, still far enough to not allow him easy access to her. "You fight but now you run... like a coward... you say you are Firekin but all I see is a traitor!" She stomped. Hopefully someone was coming to her aid...

Rage, grief, anger. He harnessed those emotions and set fire to them. Between him and freedom was this white female, yelling and screaming at him. Calling him a coward. Was it cowardice to run when you had no choice if you wanted to live? Of course not! He'd be a fool to stay and fight! Besides, his friend had given up his life to save him.
He would not let Hakan die in vain.
"Fool, get out of my way!!" And he leapt at her, raising a fore-paw, claws unsheathed, as he lashed out, intending to irradiate her. To free the way...
...To make his escape.

Zii met him back with tooth and claw. There was no way in hell this lion was going to get away with any of this. She felt his blow and ignored it fully, lashing out with her own unsheathed claws. She knew she was wounded but in the fury of it all, ignored the searing pain that flashed across the side of her face, eager to only attack him and cause him wounds.
Hopefully enough to slow him down.

The sting of her claws had him retreating a moment, bringing with it fresh pain. His claws were stained with blood from a successful attack, but the little spitfire seemed not to care. She continued her assualt as if she had not felt a thing, numbed - no doubt - by her anger and her grief.
With a roar, he leapt forwards, intending to shove her sideways. And then, with a growl of pain, kicked off into a run. He did not want to waste time here with her. Did not want to waste energy fighting her when he needed to get out.
He dared not look back.
Ignoring his lungs and the pain, he made his last attempt to get out alive.

Zii let him go. She simply let herself fall to the ground. It was over. Her love for Rowtag was making her hurt so deeply she didn't care if the wounded one got away. She would regret letting him go, but he wouldn't get far with those injuries and she did her best. She fell onto her side, her bloodied face wrinkled into a grimace of pain.
"Curse you..." She called, her golden eyes squeezed shut. She reached up with a paw to touch tenderly at her face, to see if she was terrible wounded, it was just scratches, nothing fatal or serious even.
But the wound in her heart would never heal.
