It was going to rain.
Nikon could feel it in the way the wind brushed against her dark fur, in the way the air had gone heavy and the sky had darkened before twilight. It might not be a terrific storm, but a bit of water was certainly on the way. She had no problem with this, after such a hot day a good rain would feel delicious. It beat a trip down to the river, where she’d discovered that crocidiles thought cubs learning how to fish made good snacks.
Maybe that hadn’t been the best idea, but everyone survived it so no problems there.
But the trouble with rain was…most people wanted to curl up somewhere sheltered and let it pass. Whereas Nikon wanted to be out and about. Usually she would talk to Simo, but her pale-furred…not-quite-a-rival had seemed to just…vanish lately. She was never around, they barely spoke, everyone must think they’d some kind of falling out. Maybe Si was just lazy all of a sudden. They used to get up to so many things and now…well. Now it was boring. But perhaps there was someone else about…

It had been a long day already. Fana sighed as she padded along, her joints aching with the tiredness of the day. She too could feel the rain coming, but to her it would be a balm, not a menace, something to cool and ease the ache in her very bones. She should have said "no" to the second hunting party, but...they had needed her. She couldn't let them down. So she had gone, but at the cost of exhaustion.
Knowing she was at her limits, but also knowing that if anyone had asked for her help she would have given it, she had distanced herself from the rest of the pride. If no one knew where she was, they couldn't ask her for anything, and if no one asked her for anything, she could rest for a while. Fana felt horribly guilty for running away like this, though she knew she didn't want to collapse from exhaustion. She sighed again, stopping to curl up in a hollow in the dry earth, knowing that it wouldn't be dry for much longer. Perhaps she could take a minute or two. Surely no one would need anything in that length of time.

Hot orange eyes finally fell on a pale shape huddled along the edge of the dry earth. Generally, Nikon was rather...arrogant when it came to dealing with the pale-furred lionesses. She had nothing personal against them, far from it. But she had inherited the notion that darker was better... of course, since she was already the best that hardly seemed like it mattered anyway.
"Hello Fana," Nikon called brightly as she padded over to where the lioness lay curled in a small hollow. Perhaps it wouldn't be so dull after all...wait... "Where've you been all day?" she asked. Nikon wasn't blind, she could see the lioness was tired. But...she was so going to be so bored...

Fana lay in her hollow, her eyes fluttering shut. Nuzzling her nose in a nook at her elbow, she whuffled softly as she began drifting away into dreamland. She was halfway asleep when a voice called her name. Her pale blue eyes fluttered open and focused on the dark fur of a lioness. "Oh, Nikon...it's you." So much for not being disturbed. Fana yawned as she rose, stretching out her back in a graceful arc. "Hunting. We took two parties out today. One of my lionesses heard of some good antelope over on the east side." She smiled, almost apologetically, as she added, "I'm sorry you caught me napping. Did you need something?" Fana, though aware of the rivalries between the dark and the light colored lionesses, had never really been involved. They were part of the pride...it had always seemed wrong to her to treat them poorly. And though Fana would have rather been left alone, she wouldn't take her exhaustion out on Nikon. After all, what sort of example would that set for those in her group?

Hunting. Twice. Darn.
Nikon's tail lashed irritably. All the way on the East side? She probably ought to be impressed that Fana was still conscious enough to talk to her, but really all she could think of was that she was definitely going to be bored now.
"...oh. Well..." she tried, wondering what she was going to say now. Dragging someone exhausted off for shenanigans really wasn't nearly as fun after all. "Not really I guess. Just wondered what was up."

Fana's head tilted slightly, a puzzled expression on her face. "What's the matter, Nikon?" Fana didn't understand why Nikon would look so...disappointed. Unless maybe she had wanted something. Fana plastered a smile on her face, like she had done so many times before. "But if you wanted to go do something, that would be fine. I'm not that tired. It might be fun, what do you say?" Fana tried to sound convincing. After all, she felt responsible for the lionesses, even the dark-colored ones. If Nikon needed her, she would be there, not matter what. Besides, she wasn't nearly tired enough to sit out, she reasoned with herself. She could go for a bit longer. Fana shoved herself to her feet, ignoring her aching muscles. Maybe a little fun would do her some good.

Oh, now, this...was somewhat...hm. Nikonkoni's tail lashed. She was not in the habit of coddling anyone, in any way. But, dispite her reputation and atidude, she didn't like to think of herself as an actual bully. A little rough around the edges...and the middle...and, well, okay, she was rough. But that was only a good thing! It made her a good huntress, a fierce huntress. It didn't completely blind her to the needs of others. And if Fana was tired, she would hardly be as much fun.
Well, maybe they could just go for a little walk or something. Maybe catch a drink before it rained...not that there was that much point to that. Perhaps Nikon could fish in the rain while Fana got some rest on the bank, and then she'd still have company and it wouldn't be as 'rough' as dragging the pale lioness out on a third hunt.
"I was going to head out for some fishing, I was wondering if you'd want to come along," the dark lioness suggested, admittedly rather pleased with herself for this new plan.

"Fishing?" Fana commented, a smile brightening her face, "That sounds like fun." She walked up beside Nikonkoni, grateful for the suggestion. "I heard you were a fine fisher. I'm sure the males will be pleased if you bring them some nice big fish!" Fana laughed lightly, beginning to walk towards the customary fishing hole. Fishing wouldn't be so bad, and besides, Fana couldn't turn down Nikon. Besides the fact that it would be rude, relations between the light and the dark coated members of the pride were often tense. Why that was, Fana had no idea. But she didn't intend to contribute to it, no sirree!

Nikon might have preened slightly when the pale lioness commented on how she'd heard she was a fine fisher. Of course, it was only natural for people to know of her skills. She was, after all, the best. Simo couldn't even compare, especially since her light furred...no, they were not rivals... Anyway, Si had been rather nonexistant around here lately, and if she wanted to even try competing with Nikon, not that she could, she'd need to have been more on top of things than that! Sharper. In practice, in constant practice. Always, always, always working hard to improve...
"Males certainly seem to think with their stomachs," the dark lioness commented dryly. It seemed they did little else besides laze about and eat, though Koga had been fun to mess with and Matifu seemed decent enough. Still, it seemed like the females were by far superior, at least in Nikon's eyes. Especially the dark furred ones...but she didn't feel like pointing that out. Fana was nice company after all.
"The water is cool," the dark lioness said as she dabbled a paw in briefly once they reached the usual spot, her hot orange eyes searching for signs of movement. Fishing was entertaining enough, it required more waiting paitently than she would have really liked, but it was worth it. Besides, if they got wet fishing, well, it was probably going to pour anyway. No difference.

Fana smiled at Nikon's witty comment. "They certainly do." She sighed softly. She was growing old, and would soon be unable to bear another litter of cubs. With her two daughters grown, she felt anxious for more babies to mother, but...it seemed the males had better things to do than to pay too much attention to her.
"Is it?" Fana's eyes perked up. It was a hot day, after all. She ambled over to the water's edge and lay down with her front paws dangling in the cool water. She grinned at her companion. "Maybe I'll get lucky and a fish will swim right into my paws!"
