Another pack of young Gaian's, children and those teens still not so caught up in their new age given title ran past me, laughing and screaming in delight. By the warm light and the wild sounds of cheer coming from ahead, the Mods must have been going all out this year.
With a smile, I felt my stride start to quicken in response to the merriment ahead, when a discordant note rang from behind. Then another, and another, almost in time with the pulse of dread that suddenly washed through me. A tingling behind my fingernails, like foul current dancing through the air.
"Should be sugar plum fairies, burn them," I muttered. I turned back the way I'd come and dropped into a run. By the end of the block, I saw them. Little green monsters had backed the children into a darkened porch in one of the many apartment buildings crammed onto the street.
Grunnies.
Great.
If I took that one down, there should be enough room to get the kids out of here. I hoped. I felt a snarl escape my throat as one of them turned to look at me. Or more likely, the golden energy forming a broadsword of light and fire in my hand.
"LEND ME YOUR WRATH!"
I refused to see this time of joy and peace tainted for one man's ego.

Before it could recover, I moved as best I could between the pack (did Grunnies run in packs, or were they herds like normal rabbits?) and the children.
"Is anyone hurt"
On of the older boys, who'd already interposed himself between the others and the herd (I think pack sounds better for the viciousness little things actually) shook his head, fear having stole his voice.
I nodded back at him, and smiled as reassuringly as I could.
"I'll take one out of the fight, and then I need you all to run back towards where everyone's gathered. Go find a guard, and let them know what happened, all right?"
The boy nodded again, and some of the other older children, teenagers, picked up the smaller.
I turned back towards the pack (yeah, definitely a pack). The Grunnies were growling, shifting back and forth, looking for an opportunity to strike again. I waited till the one I'd hit was close before I lunged at it again.
Hopefully just one...

I looked out at the growling pack, trying to time my next attack. Thank the light they didn't think, or attack for that matter, like a pack.
Finally, the one I'd already injured shifted back into position.
No use fainting, they'd never appreciate the effort after all.

My first blow landed, but it looked like it was only a glancing blow.
"This could be worse then I thought," I found myself muttering.
The children behind me began to stir, fretting. They were probably picking up on my frustration.
"Don't worry, we'll have you free soon."

"I'm getting tired of this little Grunnie..." I snarled.
I drew deeper, hoping to make the next strike count. I couldn't afford to let anything else sneak up on me while I was trying to fight these off.
"No, don't worry about that. Get the kids to safety, and then we can worry about what's next. Be in the present," I reminded myself.
I felt a roar escape my lips as I surged at the vile rabbit-thing again.

The blow connected solidly, and with a wet squish, I felt my blade dig in. The Grunnie burst into short lived flame, and fell to the ground, charred and dead.
I glanced back to shout run, but I didn't have to. The group of children, and young adults I was pleased to see, where off like a shot. The older herding or carrying the younger.
I shifted my stance again, putting myself between the children and the vile little beasts. Luckily, their attention seemed much more focused on me at the moment then any of those fleeing.
I grinned. Just how I'd wanted it.
The blade in my hand flared even brighter for a moment, the golden light and tongues of flame pushing back the twilight gloom.
Let them come. I am the shield that guards the realms of men.

As the pack of Grunnies finally dispersed, I leaned back again the closest wall and took a deep breath.
The stillness had returned to the night air again. For a moment, I toyed with the idea that it was all over. I almost convinced myself too. I wasn't fooled though. If I'd really thought this was over, I'd have released my blade. Since it was still held, I wasn't fooling anyone.
I sighed as I heard heavy footfalls coming from the direction the Grunnies had gone. As the first of what looked like hulking labtechs rounded the corner, I groaned.
"Seriously? Scientist's all strung out on their own freak experiments and looking for test subjects? Gambino, you need to work on your villainous tropes."
I pushed off the wall and walked towards the first of the lab techs striding purpsfully down the street towards were the Modmas gathering was still going in full swing.
"Hey, listen, it's the holiday's, how about we all just go home and kick back? We can reschedule this for after New Years, right?"
The lab-coated super soldier looked at me quizzically. Must be my natural charm breaking though the oaf's mental haze. I really am too good at...
"Fascinating," the first said. "Manifestation of hardened light, with extreme exothermic characteristics."
"Is it somehow anchored to another device on his person?" Another behind him added.
"I do not believe there is any object anchoring it to him. I think a vivisection is in order. We should check his internal organ's for any unusual characteristics," a third pointed out.
"Hey now guys, it's not polite to talk about me like I'm not here," I said, raising the blade into a defensive position.
"I think this will be a fascinating test subject to collect," the first one said again, turning back to me.
"Yes," the third one added. "It's been so long since they've let us have something that can really... appreciate what's being done to them. And so often it's just children."
"There will be an abundance of those just ahead, gentlemen," the second said.
"Does anything sane come out of Gambino's labs anymore?"
I sprung to the attack, a two handed blow swing going for the first tech's head.

 Due to years of experiments gone horribly wrong, these labtechs have become virtual supersoliders. Their incredible physique is only rivaled by their pursuit of new test subjects. AC - 12 HP - 60 Attack Hit for 19 damage! Current HP: 41 One attack remains!

Damn, he's fast...
While a hell of a swing by how much he'd staggered back, it was nearly a miss. I steadied myself, and moved in again. There was no way I was going to let any of these things get past me.
Hopefully I could hold them here.
The street should be narrow enough.
My blade sliced out again, trailing flame and golden light in it's wake.
