Legend of the Dead: The Battle of Modmas

[Kai Karasurei]

A bleak wind blew across the cold stretch of land that extended out in front of the Great Wall of Gambino. From his vantage point on the crumbling structure, Kai could see all the way to the beach, his sharp archer's eyes picking out the fleeing forms of warriors who had flocked to the call to arms. Usually, Kai would have found himself on the opposite side of this battle. He was a creature of Gambino's Empire; he owed his allegiance to G-Corp...but this....an attack on he merriment of the Winter Solstice, an abomination of Modmas....This Kai could not stand for.

To either side, Kai's undead minions stood side by side with desperate Gaians. They would meet the survivors of the beach defence, rally them to the wall and stand against whatever Gambino threw at them.

"S-s-sir! The snow is melting.....and the grass...it's moving!" One of the volunteer soldiers said with fear in his voice. His shaking finger pointed out a patch of green that had broken through the snow on the heels of the fleeing beach defence forces. Kai squinted a moment before he spoke, the grave tone in his voice ringing clear through his Kitsune mask.
"That is not grass. They are Grunnies. Prepare yourselves! The forces that would destroy Modmas are upon us. Steel your hearts against fear and remember what you are fighting for!" Kai's words struck a chord with the living warriors upon the wall. Each turned to his comrade and felt a swell of pride and courage. Kai and his zombie minions, however, knew no fear...for they were the undead! The G-virus ran strong within their blood. The Grunnies would meet their match on the Great Wall of Gambino.

As a rapturous cheer went up from the newly inspired host of defenders, Kai drew his bow. The power of a thousand torture souls imbued itself within his arrow as Kai drew upon his Ring-Fu and impowered the death whisper with his own Ghi.

"For MODMAS!"

Kai fired....

The arrow, pulsating with power, flew from Kai's bow. It cut the wind like a sword splitting flesh until it speared one of the creatures in the writhing mass of Grunnies. The slain beast fell benneath the mass of its kindred and, for a moment, it seemed that was all that would happen. Then the power in the bow unleashed in a deafening explosion. Grunnies, burned and broken, were flung through the air like ragdolls, raining down on those fortunate enough to survive. First blood went to Kai who grinned behind his mask.

Kai watched the tide of Grunnies mill in confusion. The explosion had shaken the little creatures enough to halt their advance a few moments. These precious moments were spent rallying the fleeing beach defenders. Sergeant Reldon climbed the steps to Kai's position. The sergeant had been in charge of defending ths beach.
"Things did not go according to plan" Reldon said. Kai shook his head sombrely in response.

The plan was to lure Gambino's forces to the beachhead furthest from any inhabitated areas where an assembly of warriors could fight without fear of collatitel damage. However, Kai and the officals of the Barton Regulars had grossly underestimated the numbers under Gambino's control. Now, Grunnies were in the streets, the coast belonged to Gambino's horde and Kai could see fresh reinforcements arriving on the beach....

It was bad.

With the situation dire, Kai made no attempt ar conversation with the sergeant. Instead, he gave the signal for those with the capability for ranged attacks to fire at will. These were all volunteers and while they did not all have formal training, they appeared to be of the most dangerous type of Gaian's around. Hard as nails and merciless, the ragtag army began to blast away at their assailants. Kai took a moment to appraise the carnage that was sewn amongst the transgressors. He was pleasantly appeased by the caliber of these volunteers...no pun intended.

Kai added the explosive power of his death whisper to the volley of the other archers on the wall. As death rained down on their ranks, the grunnies forced their headlong charge to begin anew.

The arrows, bullets and other projectiles skewered and sundered many Grunnies. They fell in droves, making a green and red carpet for the Grunnies that simply stampeded over them. Kai's Death Whisper blasted a great number into a pile of charred and severed bodies, leaving huge gaps in the line that was closing in on the Great Wall of Gambino.

Kai could see the second wave of humanoid attackers and knew he had to break the grunnies quickly. These toxic rodents were one thing, easily picked off and without a shred of protection. If he knew anything about Gambino, and Kai knew quite a bit, it would only get harder from here on in. His eyes narrowed at the thought and he braced himself for a fight that, only a few scant hours ago, he was sure they would win. Again, his bow let fly.

This time, the Grunny swarm broke ranks and ran from the thing before it exploded. They had learned by now that its pulsating mass meant death. Kai cursed. The fight had all but left them, yet still these Grunnies were driven by Gambino's indomitable will. Even fighting against him, Kai had to admire Gambino.

"Sergeant, have your men ready themselves for another battle. I will deal with the rest of the Grunnies, but we will need to be prepared for the second wave." Kai said before leaping the wall. The stone gave a bit under the pressure of his hand as he neatly vaulted over the parapets. Landing on the ground without so much as a grunt of effort, Kai turned to face the rushing green rodents.

Kai's allies watched, transfixed with a mix of fear and admiration for the undead creature that fought by their side. They had doubted his loyalty and hesitated in lending him their trust, yet here he was, willing to face the army of Gambino head on and all alone if he must. Doubt fled from the hearts of the warriors on the wall and in the empty alcove where it had nestled, resolved began to foster and grow. They knew then that Kai would not let Gambino win....Modmas would be saved. Nothing could stop Modmas, not if several hundred Gaians had anything to say about it.

Faced with overwhelming odds and a narrow chance of victory, Kai should have been concerned at the least. Yet, his hand was steady and his resolve was strong as he drew back the bow. He held it for a moment, his statuesque frame seemingly motionless save for his hair swaying in the wind. He focused his Ghi into the cursed arrow, imbuing it with earth ripping force And then he loosed the arrow, aiming the deadly projectile not for the Grunnies, but at the ground that lay before their charge.

It was the perfect shot. The arrow buried itself deep within the earth, missing the Grunnies with a few feet to spare. Heedless of the danger, the enemies of Modmas continued their reckless advance until they were on top of the well placed shot. At that point, Kai focused on his Ghi. Not the Ghi within himself, but that which he had wrapped the arrow in prior to his shot. With a massive uproar, an explosive force rent the earth in twain, blasting back the Grunnies and forming a trench deep enough to impede the progress of any would-be attacker. The sharp drop saw no end in the black abyss that lay below. Kai smiled. It had been the last straw. Such power broke the spirits of the tiny rodents and destroyed the hold that Gambino had placed upon them. Finally, their fear of Kai was greater than their fear of Gambino.

The Grunnies would trouble these defenders of Modmas no more.

A cheer went up from the Great Wall of Gambino as Kai reentered the defensive position and took his place on the parapets.

The cheer was cut short when a panicked lookout cried, "LABTECHS!"

Rapidly closing the distance between beach and Wall were humanoid figures dressed in lab coats. The moved faster than any human could and as they closed the gap, the defenders could see the razed look in their eyes. Kai heard one soldier speaking to another,
"I hear that if they don't kill ya, they take ya back to be a test subject." The speaker's audience shuddered at the thought.
"Then let's make sure they can't take us anywhere, eh soldier?" Kai replied with a glance over his shoulder. He slipped his Death Whisper back into his inventory and charged up his Guns, Guns, Guns ring. With a thought, Kai summoned his LW-1009 Precision Long Range Rifle to him, his eye ready for the scope as the gun fell right into his cradled hands. With practiced ease, Kai found a target in the front, tracked it for a few moments, and then squeezed the trigger.

As if sensing the attack, the Labtech Kai had aimed for leapt to the side, letting the bullet bounce harmlessly in the dirt. Kai cursed. This was going to be much harder. Kai looked up and took stalk of the situation. All around him, the situation played out similarly. Mass firepower was being easily avoided by the superior agility of the oncoming opponents. Kai was sure that this time, it would end in hand to hand combat. As much as he trusted the warriors who signed up for this mission, Kai wanted to ensure that they delayed close combat for as long as possible.

Kai caught the look on the sergeant's face and knew the man was having a similar thought.
"Will just have to hope that trench you left in the ground is enough to slow them down." the sergeant suggested meekly, knowing the likelihood of that happening.

Another shot rang out from Kai's weapon, but again the enemy avoided the attack. By now, the Labtechs had reached the gaping trench. However, where the tide of Grunnies had faltered, the Labtechs redoubled their efforts. With strength born of dangerous experiments and mad science, their powerful legs propelled them over the bottomless chasm. They were no longer merely humans.

Kai cursed. He knew he would have to unleash more of his precious Ghi.
"If that is how you want to play it, Gambino, then fine..." Returning his Long Rifle to his inventory, Kai charged up all his rings to full capacity. As the raw power fed into the jewelry, stray bolts of energy began to strike out. Loose stones trembled and the wind picked up as if by Kai's command.
"Ghi Energy Level 2!" Kai screamed, "ROBO-KAI ACTIVATION!" Kai's body was covered in cascading Ghi energy, blocking him out from view with a shining silhouette of white light. Just as quickly as it arose, the light burst away from Kai. In the Grombie's place, now stood a robot. Jets fixed in double-jointed legs, a flight pack, arms brandishing a soulfire gun on one side and a massive drill on the other. Boundless energy stored itself in blue crystals about his body and very inch that was not glowing or able to spit death was armoured in a mysterious metal. His eyes were two menacing points of red light...and they were fixated on the Labtechs.

The ground shook as the mass of Labtechs landed as if Gaia herself feared the oncoming army. With evil grins made of nasty, pointed fangs and malice-filled eyes, the Labtechs mocked the feeble defenses and continued their advance at a leisurely pace. The lead Labtech spoke as he reached Kai, who was the foremost defender,
"Your aim is impeccable. However, we are too quick for even bullets. Give up now and pay tribute to Gambino. The penalty for refusing this gracious opportunity is death." The Labtech's voice was low and threatening, like the growl of a hungry beast.
"Oh yeah?" Kai said. The smile on the Labtech's face was replaced with a look of disbelief and then a countenance of pure anger. Kai continued,
"Well, I'm sure that gives this stalwart defenders a second thought...."
"Yeah, right! We won't give up that easily!" The sergeant interrupted from high on the wall. Kai laughed at the intrusion before going on,
"As for me? I'm already dead......and so are you." Kai punctuated his gloating with a blast from his Soulfire arm, which was leveled point blank at the Labtech's torso. The white coat wearing monstrosity was blown back off his feet, spiraling through the air to land amongst the host of his compatriots. The first injury among their number gave the Labtechs a reason to pause. Their apparent leader, standing up with a large burn on his chest which still spewed smoke, practically screamed his next order, overcome with indignation at Kai's impudence.
"Don't just stand their! KILL THEM ALL!!!"

As the Labtech's ran forward, so too did Kai.

As Kai rushed in, the overwhelming number of labtechs swamped him. It was like being overtaken by. Cloud of locusts...giant locusts...in white lab coats...

Behind the mask, Kai gritted his teeth and pushed back pile of labtechs growing on his metallic suit. The servos whined as more weight was added until finally Kai collapsed unable to bare the load.

From then wall, the defenders lost sight of Kai. In the same breathe, those labtechs not engaging Kai reached the base of the wall. Just as they prepared to scale the structure, Kai's zombie horde, mixed in with the defenders on the wall, leapt from their perches to fight the labtechs in hand to hand while the living tried as best they could to sow death among the enemy.

Kai continued to fight beneath the pile of bodies. Enhanced claws and advanced weaponry tore at armored skin while Kai was unable to inflict any damage at all.

Kai cursed. He had faced more dire situations than this and it infuriated him that he was appearing so incompetent in the face of such an important responsibility as saving Modmas.

At the back of his mind, Kai could feel his zombie minions breaking apart. Torn limb from limb, they were no match for the labtechs.

Just a little longer. You just have to gold them long enough. Kai thought as if speaking to them directly.

Kai grunted with effort, struggling beneath a tide of creatures that seemed too powerful for his meager abilities. He had faced vampires, other zombies, shotgun armed Gaians, Orcs, Elves, the animated and a myriad other beasts unmentionable in mortal circles. Yet, here his powers fell short. Here he was overcome.
No! Not here! I wont let it happen. Kai thought, redoubling his efforts to free himself. He barely managed to struggle out from under the Labtechs, whose kicks and punches had crumpled his armour and damaged his weapons.
"Kai!" One of the defenders called out in panic. Kai looked up. As cold and frightening as he was, Kai was becoming a symbol of hope for these battle hardened defenders in the face of defeat. That meant he had a responsibility.
"Right then, Mr. Labtechs. Looks like I'm going to need a bigger gun..." Kai growled.

Just as Kai reached for his inventory, he felt the grip of an iron-like hand pressing against his wrist.
"I don't think so!" The Labtech's leader whispered in his ear. With strength the equal of ten men, the Labtech lifted Kai off the ground and whipped him up into the air in a single fluid motion. Kai let out a wordless scream of frustration right before the Labtech leapt into the air and, with a flip, smashed the heel of his foot into Kai's stomach. The sickening sound of cracking bones accompanied the strike.

Kai hit the ground hard and lay, motionless, in the crater made by the impact of his body.

Kai struggled up from the last attack, crunching bones indicating the damage sustained by the undead warrior. The Labtech's strike had caused him suffering, but it had not succeeded in keeping Kai from his infinite inventory. He had retrieved his dual Ancient Katana. Kai's enemy snarled at him.
"It makes no difference what weapon you wield, you are no match for me." The Labtech yelled. The monstrous scientist lunged forward, one clawed hand stretched out for Kai's heart. For a moment, it seemed that the attack would tear Kai's chest out and then...
A flash of ancient metal cleft the air and the Labtech yanked his hand away with a mixture of surprise and pain. The Labtech clutched a bleeding arm and laughed
"This is barely a scratch, you pitiful creature." Its laughter was cut short when Kai spoke in calm and even tones.
"Perhaps...but now they know that you bleed." The Labtech followed Kai's pointing sword to the defender's on the wall whose fear of the Labtechs was slowly fading to anger.
"Let us see just how much blood you have left shall we?" Kai said grinning.

The Labtech screamed in frustration, but the battle was swinging in Kai's favor. Ignoring the flesh wound, the Labtech sprang to the attack again, pulling a giant syringe on Kai and plunging it towards the Grombie's chest. Kai blocked with crossed blades and pushed back against the unbelievable strength of the Labtech. However, where Kai had failed before, he now prevailed. With a mighty burst of effort, Kai shoved his opponent off balance and lashed out. This time he severed the whole arm.

The Labtech was still quick and even with one arm missing, he was a threat to Kai and the Modmas defenders. As those on the wall all did their part in the battle, Kai focused on his duel with the leader of the Labtechs.
"I am impervious to pain, foolish Grombie!" The Labtech screamed, lashing out with his remaining hand. It slashed once, twice, and on the third time Kai ducked beneath the swing and stabbed forward with one of his katana. It grazed the Labtech's left leg, ripping the lab coat and opening a gash on the thigh. This time however, the Labtech pressed the attack despite the damage inflicted.
