What's your opinion on Tabooing? (Hmong Culture)

I had this discussion with some people at school and what they think. I say that there's a pretty even amount of people on both sides....
The younger generations' answers were really different from the older generations' answers.

Like if someone you are dating is a Xiong...
Your last name is Xiong...
But your father is an illegitimate child of a Yang person...
Would that be considered at tabooing?

hello, this will be my first post as a new guild member. yay!

uh, the question is kinda vague. there are a lot of types of taboos in the world. is this question directed towards tabooing in the Hmong culture or tabooing in American culture or....?

anyways, i'll narrow it down to how i interpreted the question. i think that taboo in the Hmong culture should not be done, it is taboo after all. taboo is taboo, it shouldn't be done for a reason.

for example, an unmarried couple should not stay together in a bedroom. that shouldn't be done, because although the couple didn't do anything bad, there is the assumption that hangs over the parents' heads that there was the potential that something bad might have happened. that act raises those assumptions and that defiles the "face" (it's in " " because i couldn't find a better word) of the parents, their pride or such and the couple is forced to marry. that's just what i think.

People at my church believe that if you get a "tattoo" it's taboo and a sin. I think that's just b u l l s h i t.
People that goes to my church are really stupid and ignorant. Good lord I stopped going to church.

My opinion on taboo is that it is just superstitions of wrong doing from other people. So in shorter words its just a group of people's opinions.

americans do this all the time by tabooing with the same last names.
i dont see anything realy wrong unless its incest. eek

I have to agree with you. Some rs friend thought every religion is a taboo. That was ex friend. I thought that was mess up. I don't think it a taboo. I think a taboo is ex friend putting down people reg lion in their culture.

Is tabooing really just all about the last name?

Is it wrong to date someone who is a stranger with the same last name...but is it right to date your distant cousin that has a different last name?

Taboo is "generally" when you date someone of the same clan, in other words, someone with the same last name (in the Hmong culture that is). Now, there may be different views on what "taboo" is, but that's generally what it is.
Whether it is right or wrong depends on why one considers something to be wrong or right.

Personally, i find nothing wrong with it. Truly, so what if you have the same name? Just as long as you're not blood relatives, there should be nothing wrong with it; a name you can always change.

That is true in all. But some culture thinks it a taboo or other stuff.

*nods my head* I don't think i will ever marry a Hmong Girl. But if i did and we'd have the same last name and my parents wouldn't allow it, i would just run far far away with her. =w=
