 A long time ago in our history, sisters, we lived in a pride ruled by males. We as females were allowed only to hunt, breed, and raise cubs, nothing more. We could not train as warriors, we could not learn the ways of plants or history or the gods. Even as huntresses we were not great. Our ancestor mothers fled their land to flee male rule, to try and achieve the greatness they thought they were capable of. And so they wandered the lands of no pride for a time. They had sons and daughters in their travels, leaving the male-cubs with their father and moving on.
But they found that as mothers they were still distracted. Family, love, these relationships hinder a lioness of becoming great.
When they came to our glorious pridelands, a vacant and plentiful paradise given to them by the gods, they vowed no attachments. You shall not be lover nor mate, mother nor daughter. We are all females, all sisters, no more. No male shall walk the pridelands save for the gift of more sisters or if he has knowledge to teach, then he shall be dismissed.
We are the warrior. The artist. The caretaker. The shadow on wind-nudged water. The seducer and the unbound.
We are the mysteries that pirates whisper of in awed voices.
We are sirens.
We are mermaids.
Announcements
exclaim There will be a metaplot sometime this month I think, to kick-start the pride. I haven't decided yet whether the pride will be made official before or after the Meta, but I am currently looking over the candidates for the Lady positions and trying to sort that out.
We still need a cert symbol, if anyone wants to help with that. I have some ideas, but I can't actually draw them... So shoot me a PM if you want to help. XD

Location
The mermaids actually live on a fairly large tidal island of the coast of the mainland. Though the island can be seen clearly from the mainland, the swim is generally considered to be too far and dangerous, but there is a land-bridge that connects the island and the mainland, but this can only be used at low-tide and up to part-way between low- and high-tide.
The island is large and lush, populated with birds and small mammals, freshwater pools where fish can be caught if sea fishing has been poor. There is plenty of room for the pride, as it has been determined that it takes several days to go from one end of the island to another, including time spent getting food, with slightly less to walk across the middle as the island is longer than it is wide.
The island is not too far down the coast from where the Maestros Del Mar make their home, these pirates being the main interaction the lionesses have with the outside world, though it is not uncommon for the ladies to run into vikings as well. The Stormborn have an even more negative/wary view of the mermaids, so interactions are fewer/briefer than with pirates.
(We're going to pretend that Unguja/Zanzibar is a tidal island rather than a normal island.)

Religion
The pride acknowledges the existence of both goddesses and gods alike and encourage their sisters and the consorts to worship who they choose. It is, however, seen as a little bit more traditional for a lioness to focus on a goddess related to her calling, such as an herbalist sending prayers or thanks to the goddess of Herb Lore.
There is no defined religion and worship is an acceptable past-time though not encouraged as worship may get in the way of the calling for anyone not a Priestess.
Gods and Goddesses that choose to visit the island are treated with the utmost respect, though the females of the pride do ask that they are given some amount of respect in return. While a goddess is welcome anywhere on the island, it is requested of gods that they remain among the priestesses, unless they intend to mate with one of the sisters. This is to prevent any confusion among the rest of the pride and to make sure everyone remains comfortable during the visit.
- Tarishi, Goddess of Messengers: Messengers found the island not long after the tsunami wrecked the coastline. While she didn't agree completely with the no-family ideals, she likes the pampering, island atmosphere, and the fact that they know what messengers are and their uses. It isn't her home, but certainly a vacation-spot and a place to give her blessings from time to time.

Outside of the Island
With the help of some allies on the mainland, as well as their actions, the sisters of the Einaliai are seen as sea nymphs that lure males away with their seductive song. They are dangerous male-eaters, some say that they have their way with a male before devouring him beneath the waves.
Any male that is seen after an encounter tells wild tales of an advanced society of females with no male in sight and being treated like a king, but with no idea of how he got wherever he had been or how he returned alive. Some call this memory-lapse the "Mermaid's Kiss". Others simply write it off as sun-sickness.
History
The pride was founded by a small group of lionesses who had fled a patriarchal pride before they could be mated in order to find a place where they could be what they wished to be. In the roguelands, some of the females found mates and continued to travel with the group. But it soon became apparent that being with her mate and helping to raise her cubs was just as much of a distraction as anything else and those who had taken mates were left behind.
So the remaining females beseeched the gods, asking for someone to take them to a place where they could live without distractions. Now, there is no true place like that, but a passing goddess thought the idea in interesting one and set out to find such a place.
The place she found was a piece of the land, like a leaf at the end of a thin twig, in the ocean. A place where twice a day, Ocean saw fit to swallow the connecting land. It didn't fall too deep below the waves, but far enough that trying to cross it when the waters were high was much too dangerous.
The goddesses came to the females and led them to the island, a place they found to be lush and rich in food and living space, with few predators and none that were great competition.
And there they lived, crossing the bridge only to bring males back to the island when cubs needed to be born or to take male cubs elsewhere. A island of only lionesses.
Until one generation, a lioness returned with a male and begged the queen to let him stay. She cared for him as much as she cared for her sisters and wished to have cubs only with him. At first, the council refused, but the queen saw some merit in this. Firstly, the lioness maintained that he would stay near the bridge if he had to leave and that it would just be a hassle for her to go across the bridge to meet him when the pride needed more sisters. She wanted him conveniently close. Plus, the male had knowledge of writing to offer, something she thought would benefit the pride to know. And so she convinced the council and they agreed that he could stay, but that he must stay on the other side of the island and that only his lioness could come to him, not the other way around and she would go only to him.
In Recent Events...
Despite the healing and medicinal knowledge of the pride, when a plague came to the island there was nothing the lionesses could do to stop it. It was the first time that the consorts were allowed into the main pridelands for an extended period of time as the healers did their best to save the sisters and their males.
The pride was decimated and the pain was shared by all. Many sisters died, young and old both, including the former queen.
The last of the death has finally left the pride now, and the first thing on everyone's mind is to return the haven to its former glory.

Beliefs
Males - The general purpose of males is for procreation and nothing else. Too often they get in the way of higher pursuits and females bettering themselves so when a male is brought into the pridelands, he is drugged, encouraged to mate with the female that brought him into the pridelands, and then dumped back out into the roguelands once it can be determined that the female is pregnant. The purpose of the drugging is not because he is unwilling, but to ensure that he will not completely remember where he has been or what has happened to him in order to keep the pride secret.
The pride does, however, allow for a male to stay within the pride under the condition that he has something to teach them. He is generally referred to as a Consort, as he will "belong" to the female who brought him into the pride. If he so chooses, he may remain in an area separated from the main pridelands where males live who wished to remain attached to their female and vice-versa. The males of this area are not allowed into the main pridelands and will generally only see their female when she comes to him for a new litter, but from then on she will only come to him. This is the closest the pride gets to having mates.
Consorts live on the far end of the island from the bridge to the mainland, only because it is the most separated from the females. If a male is caught coming too close to the pridelands, he could be beaten by warrior guards.
Male cubs are either left with the Consorts or among the Pirates' females in the middle of the night after they are weened.
Sexuality - This is not a lesbian pride. Yes, it is very female-dominant, but they believe that relationships outside of friendship get in the way of things. They have love and respect for their fellow pride members, but nothing more. If there is found to be any romancing outside of necessary breeding (Of any kind), the offenders will be asked to leave the pride.
Females may have a high level of caring for their consort and if they wish to have a more romantic relationship with him they may leave and take him with, with the blessings of the pride. They may not, however, return to the pride if things go sour.
The point of the pride is not to make a bunch of fem-dom, man-haters. The point is to provide a home without distractions of family or lovers where a lioness can rise to her full potential if she wishes. No one is forced to stay, not even the males. Only in times of desperation has a female forced a male onto the island, the art of seduction is much easier.
Family - Female cubs are not raised by their mothers. They are taken care of by the nannies of the pride. Only the Scribe keeps track of who begot whom, simply to avoid any inbreeding that might occur in the future.
Joining Rogues - As stated above, males have specific requirements to joining.
But rogue females are always welcome into the pride, if they understand the rules and are willing to follow them. The mermaids are very accepting of new blood and seem to favor those cast out of other prides or groups. Having different beliefs than most others, the mermaids are very welcoming to females who have suffered as they had and wish to live a similar life where they can be what they wish rather than a station forced upon them.
Non-lions - The mermaids acknowledge the existence of non-lions, but do not see them as equals. They are a minor competition and do not belong on their island.
Familiars - The only familiars that the lionesses will accept are birds of prey. Anything else risks too high a chance of being mistaken for food.
Hybrids - They do not have a concept of this, so if a lioness comes across one, they would be confused and then dismiss it as a weaker creature.
Food - Food is typically from the sea rather than the savanna. If a group of lionesses have gone out hunting for males, they may be gone for several days. So while they mostly fish at home, they are capable of hunting four-legged prey-beasts.
Because of the relatively large size of the island and its sister, there are a number of deer herds present, though the huntresses avoid hunting them as often as possible, not wanting to hunt down their only other food-source.
Turtles are a delicacy that can be eaten by the queen and council, or shared with other pride members.
A beached whale or dolphin is seen as a gift from the gods and there is a great celebration and feast. They are considered sacred by the pride, so while other foods may be consumed during festivals, whales and dolphins are the only food that spawns a celebration.
A shark is the greatest kill a huntress can make. Only she is allowed to wear its teeth and she is revered among her sisters. Shark is shared among the pride, but there is no celebration like with whales or dolphins.
Names - Simply because of a tradition that has been maintained, Roman, Greek, and Gaelic names are most preferred. Water/Sea names are popular.
The nannies of the pride name the cubs, as they are, effectively, the cubs' mothers.
Items & Symbols
- Pelts and Feathers: Huntresses may wear that of preybeasts and birds, Warriors may wear the pelts of larger creatures, but it is forbidden to ever wear the pelt of another lion. Warriors are, however, allowed to wear the claws of the foes they have felled.
- Pelt Bags: The only pelts allowed outside of Huntresses and Warriors, these can be worn by Herbalists, Healers, Artisans, and the Lady of the Past
- Shark teeth: Only the huntress(es) who brought down the shark may wear these symbols of honor.
- Flowers & Other Plants: Any may wear, though they are preferred by Herbalists, Healers, Artisans, and Nannies
- Pearls, Turtle Shell, and Abalone Shell: Only the Queen and Ladies are allowed to wear these
- Metal, Other Shells, Coral, Cloth, Stones: Any may wear
- Seaweed: Considered unlucky
- Bones: Forbidden
- Skull and Crossbones: Forbidden
- Sea Creatures: Lucky/Blessed

Ranks
Queen - The queen is the ruler of the pride. She is in charge of approving all mainland "hunts" and trips to the sister island. She leads ceremonies and all public worship, plans the festivals and celebrations. Finally, she settles all disputes that there might be among the pride members. In times of war, she is the head of the tacticians.
--- Heiress - The successor of the queen when she chooses to step down or dies. Because there can be only one, all sisters wishing for this position must be tested by the queen herself.
Council - The Council is made up of the Ladies (Paw, Mind, Heart, and Past). They are in charge of commanding their specific areas. They report all information to the queen. When a lioness wishes to take a consort or believes that a male may have something to teach the pride, the council votes for or against this. If there is ever a tie, the queen has the final vote.
Lady of the Paw - Commands the Warriors and the Huntresses. She assigns apprentices to lionesses, designates fishing pools or herds the huntresses can take from, assigns leadership on hunts and guard duty of the bridges. She also approves of new hunting/fishing techniques. She always comes from the Warrior rank.
In times of war, she leads the warriors into battle.
--- Warrior - Warriors are the guardians of the pride. There is an unspoken hierarchy in the Warrior rank, some lionesses hold a more commanding and tactical role, though all Warriors take turns patrolling the island and guarding the bridge. Warriors also go as escort on trips to the mainland, though they do not hunt unless they have notified the Queen that they are going to the mainland specifically for a hunt.
--- Huntress - Huntresses are the food-gatherers of the pride. They mostly fish, though in times of need or overgrowth will hunt the deer on the island. They also go on hunting trips to the mainland to hunt for food for the party. When a Huntress goes to the mainland to hunt for a male, she is relieved of her usual hunting duties.
Lady of the Mind - Commands the Herbalists and the Artisans. She approves of new medicines, poisons, and drugs. She always comes from the Herbalist rank.
In times of war, she and her herbalists aid the healers.
--- Herbalist - Herbalists make the medicines, poisons, and drugs of the pride. There are the kinds who work to create new ones and those who focus solely on the traditional way of the Herbalist.
--- Artisan - Artisans are the crafters, artists, and entertainers of the pride. They make jewelry and decorations for homes, they sing and dance with the Priestesses and Nannies, they make bowls and other useful objects for Healers and Herbalists.
Lady of the Heart - Commands the Nannies and the Healers. She determines which nannies new sisters go to, assigns healers to patients, and can help assist in birthings. She always comes from the Healer rank.
In times of war, she leads the healers.
--- Healer - Where Herbalists make and perfect medicines, Healers are those who determine what medicines to use on the sick or injured. They tend to all of those that are ill or hurt and aid in birthings. When a consort or young male is injured or ill, the number that is needed go to the males' territory and provide the treatment needed.
--- Nanny - Nannies are the mothers of the pride. They feed the all of the cubs until they are weaned and, under the Lady of the Past's discretion, take the male cubs to where they shall grow up. They raise Sisters until they are old enough to make a choice for what they wish to do in life. After that, Sisters are given to a mentor in their chosen profession.
Lady of the Past - The scribe and history-keeper of the pride. She keeps track of everything that has happened in the pride's history and especially family lines. In times of war, she and any who can aid her in doing so act as messengers.
--- Apprentice - The successor of the Lady of the Past when she chooses to step down or dies. Because there can be only one, all sisters wishing for this position must be tested by the Lady herself.
--- Seer - Those who have frequent-enough visions (or think they do) and wish to focus themselves on interpreting them may be seers. They report all of what they see to the Lady of the Past or her Apprentice for recording.
--- Priestess - Priestesses are those females who wish to study information on the gods. Of all of the pride, they are the ones who leave the island most often, to gain information about the gods. They also are the strongest prayers and often have small sacrifices, like trinkets thrown into the sea or small kills left on a stone.
They tell the Lady of the Past of the gods they learn about or have met and she records this for future generations.

--- Consort - Any males that choose to remain on the island.
------ Youth - Any male that is not old enough or has not made the decision to stay or leave the island.

Characters/Quests
Reeshie Hack I have a [Lioness]Username: Reeshie Hack Name of Character: Syrena Age of Character: Adult Desired Rank: Queen Personality: Syrena is calm, level-headed, and kind. She understands the responsibility of her station and takes it as serious as any of her sisters, possibly even more. Besides, this, however, she is a very curious individual, especially when it comes to the politics of other prides. When her sisters bring new sisters or males from the mainland, she takes a small time to talk with each one, to listen to stories and possibly learn things about the workings of the outside world. Back-story: Daughter of a huntress, Syrena was raised in the fashion of all of her sisters, as a daughter of the pride, not a single member. As a cub, she showed herself to be not only clever, but a mediator among her sisters. The queen saw this in the young female and had the nannies encourage this behavior. Upon reaching adolescence, she was tested among several other females to be the heir to the throne and passed above her competitors. When the aging queen finally stepped down to relax in the sunset of her life, Syrena's first act as queen was to name one of her sisters who had been tested against her as one of her Ladies.Appearance: Syrena

While some lionesses take advantage of the freedom of the all-lioness pride by training their bodies to their full potential, Kucheka does so with her mind. She knows the pride's history and lineage like the back of her paw and dedicates most of her time to research and history-keeping. While she is somewhat no-nonsense, Kucheka's been known to crack a serious-faced joke now and again. The younger lionesses have a harder time picking up on her subtle humor. Back-story: Daughter of Tamu'dhihaka, god of water, Kucheka is an original member of the pride. Her mother had been an original member, but left the island in a love-stricken search of Tamu shortly after Kucheka was born. She hasn't been seen since. Appearance: xXx

Personality: She has a heart of goal and is pretty knowledgable about everything and anything having to do with people skills and loving but she has almost no people skills. Having the ability to mend things that would not even be thought of to be mended. Also a pretty good inventor to say the least. Ariel is very outgoing and pretty good with talking to people. Often found along side the beach scowering for anything useful to put together. Back-story: ( I plea the fifth ) Ariel was brought upon by her mother and father from the pirate pride. She was very very good with fermenting her father's fruit and aiding her mother, feeling accepted by her parents but not entirely. They were rather, distant and she had a lot of love to give but wasn't given in return... One day, she happened upon a lionness coming out of the water.. and from then on, is history. Personality: Makutu is a mysterious female, she enjoys her own company predominately but holds a small circle of friends dear to her heart. She is dedicated to her work as a herbalist and often will put aside every aspect of her life to simply infuse herself with the study of plants and their medicinal properties. Dedicated, loyal, studious and reserved she is rarely seemed to be acting 'freely' she is usually tense in large groups of lions and prefers solitude or the singular company of a close friend. Though she appears to be antisocial she does actually enjoy quite company, it's just noise she doesn't welcome, she has a deep heart and loves deeply.
Back-story: She was born to the island not long after the plague, raised by a mother who had just recovered from a stressful pregnancy and birth. Her mother had been a herbalist as well and even after her preparation had been administered by a healer she died during the plague due to her weakened body after giving birth. Dosed with the same medication as her mother Makutu was then taken by a priestess from the island to try and escape the plague and allow her immune system to build during her young years, travelling with the priestess in her spiritual journey before returning in her adolescence to the island where she now studies and works as a herbalist like her mother.
Appearance: Quest thread. All the colours are to be inspired by the colour reference below, her legs are to be black or a very deep blue in colour and work up to a lighter blue on her body. Rare flashes of purple should be added to the main part of her body. The black part of her legs should be marked with a design to look like the glow worms in the reference for leg markings below. One of her other key markings is a Maori themed tatto which is on her lower jaw and works down her throat, see ref below. The SW reference is another of my pets that is based on this concept/design.

Desired Rank: Consort
Personality: Whetu loves freedom and is highly driven to attain freedom at any costs and therefore is a master at adaptability and change to simply escape from being bound to anything in particular. He likes the freedom of leaving Einaliai Thalassai's island and should he be asked to say for whatever reason he'd fight tooth and claw to leave the island but due to the nature of the place he often comes and goes from the lioness' homeland but also calls the island his resting place, if not his home. Because of his freedom loving nature however his grows bored quickly and is often restless and impatient and hates any form of routine. He is generally clever, analytical and a very quick thinker.
Back-story: Whetu is the brother of Makutu and was born on the island and for a short time he remembered his brief time there with his mother and siblings but like all male cubs was quickly disposed of once he was weaned. He missed the plague that grasped the island and was placed in the care of the pirates of Maestros Del Mar. He was raised with a taste of rebellion and freedom to do as one wished, he made his home in Maestros and became a member of crew to one of the captains. He however knew of a place where he'd shared time with a gentle mother and loving siblings, he longed to know of his true 'home.' Later thought rumours and legend he learnt of the island and the mermaid pride and meet his sister. He comes and goes from the island now but only to return to Maestros and his pirate friends. What he can offer as a consort: Whetu can of course be used for breeding like any other male but also he has learnt how to navigate by the stars due to his time in Maestros, he can teach this to females wishing to leave the island for a time to hunt or on a spiritual journey. Besides being a consort for breeding I do like to think his sister can visit him on the male side of the island.

Personality: A very firm lioness who is dedicated to her work and wastes no time in doing what she wants. She is very charismatic and strong, yet affectionate when caught off guard. Her heart is still bitter towards males due to her past, but perhaps one day will soften again. Still she has a steel memory when it comes to herbs and herb lore and is very experimental with medicines. ((Normally she appears very serious and has a more collected personality…but sometimes when she sees new herbs or has new ideas for drugs or medicines…well talk about a mad scientist type!))
Back-story: Kimana was originally named Pasha and was born as a result of a fling. Everything about her life was normal save for a nearly death sister, Esche, who decided to leave their mother due to her disability. Torn about her sister’s departure Pasha eventually left the rest of the family herself to set out to see what had become of her sister. Along the way she picked up on new herbs and medicines and increased her knowledge from what she had learned from their mother growing up. (She had always wanted to work with medicines due to her sister’s disability) She also picked up another thing : heartache. Falling in love with a rogue male the lioness decided that she would do anything to please him, even taking the random spells of anger and punishment. Often he would be spent after fighting with others and from other random flings which she bore through. Her blind dedication, however, was broken when he snapped after hearing she was pregnant with his cubs. Running from him she tried to save the lives inside, but was scared into running from a cliff and towards what the male had assumed was her death.
But instead of death a new life was born – Pasha was gone as a result of amnesia and Kimana was born. Innocent and free once more the lioness lost her fear of males and distrust while traveling the rogue lands. Finding friendship with a leopard she learned of his quest to find banu and decided that while he would not let her go with him out of pity to surprise him with another gift – cubs. Pregnant the lioness carried them, but could not find the leopard again. Lost and confused the lioness turned towards the waves and made a den near the pirate pride. But slowly her memories were flooding back ever since meeting with her sister Esche. Still Kimana hung onto the mixed personalities for the sake of her cubs. Pasha was pushed aside, but day after day the headaches would return. And one day after leaving her cubs she went hunting one day…never to come back.
For with the waves Kimana was lost. One of her blackouts occurred while hunting and another accident occurred. This time Pasha took back over and none of the memories from her time as Kimana were left. Not even the cubs were remembered. Falling into the ocean the lioness was swept to the siren pride where she recovered and took on a new name to begin a new life were no male would rule over her.
Plot: One day she’ll run into the cubs who are being raised by the pirate pride and get a shock as memories of her time as Kimana will return. But these memories won’t take over her mind, but reside there like a dream. And it's possible that the male she had a fling with -he needs to be customed and I need to see if my friend is still interested in that plot- for the cubs will come back into her life as either a Pirate or a consort. Brief Description of your Pride/Pack: Founded upon an island as a safe-haven for lionesses, the Einaliai structure their beliefs on the right for a lioness to choose what she wants to do with her life. The way the pride is built allows for lionesses to have a singular chosen profession that they choose, rather than needing to be huntress, mother, and caretaker of a family. Lions are allowed into the pride as consorts, so that a lioness may go to a favored male when she chooses to have cubs rather than going to the mainland in search of a fling. Sisters are raised by the nannies of the pride while male cubs are given to their father or left in other prides to be taken care of.

Pride/Pack History: Despite the healing and medicinal knowledge of the female-dominated pride, when a plague came to the island there was nothing the lionesses could do to stop it. It was the first time that the consorts were allowed into the main pridelands for an extended period of time as the healers did their best to save the sisters and their males.
The pride was decimated and the pain was shared by all. Many sisters and consorts died, young and old both, including the former queen.
The last of the death has finally left the pride now, and the first thing on everyone's mind is to return the haven to its former glory.
