This drought was a nuisance. As the days passed and there were no signs of water Xennek found himself getting more and shorter tempered. He was tense from all of this suspense and worry in the pride. How where they to survive any attacks let alone the desert itself without the presence of such an important element? Day after day he had gone out searching for water on his own, but to no avail. The desert was seemingly empty of everything save sand. Pacing through the den area the lion sighed. What was he supposed to do? He was a warrior not a scholar or healer. How could he help in this situation? Save for training himself to keep strong despite the drought? Could he really be so stubborn to fight against the restrictions this dry desert placed on his body? Then again keeping in shape was a good idea in case of trouble...

That was it then. Xennek shook his head. “I do need to get rid of this tension.” He needed a good fight. Something to get his mind working again. All of this sitting around doing nothing but thinking was hurting him. Making him more and more out of it. He just felt weaker by not fighting someone, something! Forget conserving energy because of the lack of water. He was going to find an opponent now and take all of his frustrations out on them. He was a warrior after all and if he didn’t fight then what was he? Nothing, but a useless lump of fur.

His decision final the large lion set out to look for a willing opponent.

And there in the dueling area was one lioness who seemed to be free of any current challenger. With a grin of success Xennek approached her, "You. Feel up to a good fight?" Normally he didn't challenge females, but why not? "Cause I'm willing to provide."

Kasi could feel the strain on her body - she travelled out every once in a while with the water seekers to see if she might find water, but every time she simply returned more tired and thirsty than when she had set out. So she had decided not to bother that day, and made her way back to the duelling area. She still managed to find an hour or so to train each day, even when she was out walking for water. She would hate to let her teacher down, after all.

Few people seemed to be duelling recently though, perhaps trying to conserve energy, but to Kasi, there was no point not duelling. If they all lapsed into a sedentary lifestyle, then they would surely be picked off by a stronger pride, and she would not allow herself to do such a thing.

Caught up in her thoughts, she almost didn't see the male approach, but a flash of red caught her eye and she turned towards him - almost expecting to see her brother, or someone else related to her. He, however, was not. She didn't think. She had so many relatives in the pride, it was hard to keep track.

She perked up significantly at the offer though, and a small grin appeared on her face. "Think you can actually offer a good fight?" She responded flippantly, but raised herself to her feet and set off to a clear duelling area. Her last duel had been a bit one sided- in her favour- she really hoped this other male did better.

She fell into a defensive position when she reached the area, watching him. Was he going to offer the first move to her, or take it for himself? It did not bother her either way, but she had to keep a close eye on him until she figured out how good he was.

Miss!

"Think? Dear, I know I can. The question is can you keep up?" Xennek was glad to see her response to his question. This might just prove to have been a good idea after all. Following the lioness into the dueling area the lion looked around approvingly. This was actually his first time as a challenger here. But how different could it be from a real fight? He was going to go for it. Not as strongly as if he were fighting for his life, but strong enough to give this female a time. And himself one as well. Grinning Xennek didn’t hesitate, “Let’s not waste time, hmm?”

With that he lunged towards her, but not as a really serious attack. More of a test to see how good his opponent really was. Still it would be nice if he did connect with her. At the same time he hoped not. How would it be a challenge then to hit her on his first move? Chuckling the lion reached out with his claws and gladly touched empty air. It was a miss. Twisting he landed roughly on the dry ground and faced her. He was curious, how would she react now? What kind of fighter was she? As it was, it was her move and the lion watched her patiently. Well as patiently as an eager lion could be in a fight.

Kasi didn't bother to respond to his comment - it was like a tease or some joking statement, and Kasi didn't think either of them were posed seriously enough that he wanted a response. Well, it's not like it mattered if he did, she wasn't out to make friends with duels. She was out to duel.

She was pleased when he didn't bother to try to act gentlemanly (what was the point in giving your opponent the first move just for their gender?) and he launched himself forward. Unaware that he was not serious, she treated it as if he was and threw herself to the side so that he missed. She had one advantage in fights that she knew of, and that was that she was fast on her feet. She kept her gaze on him as he landed and she gave a lopsided grin when she realised he was within range of her to leap.

She launched herself towards him as fast as she could, her claws extended and swiping towards his side. Her grin only grew when she felt it connect with fur, as she twisted to land near him and keeping her gaze firmly on his movements.

Miss!

Well she definitely wasn't a shy one. Xennek was glad to see how quickly the lioness could react. This duel was serious to her. Nothing like how he was just using it to vent off extra steam from his frustrations concerning the drought, this was serious business to her. Then maybe he should take it more seriously as well. He should. Just because it was a female and it was a drought - why was he holding back for? He needed to focus. This was going to get him no where during a fight.

Not realizing how quick she really was Xennek winced in surprise as he felt her claws rake into his side. Sheesh! The larger lion jumped back in surprise before letting out a low growl. There was no time to be so distracted by his thoughts or this heat. He had a battle to fight.

Still he stumbled as he threw himself at her and once again hit air.

Kasi found his reaction to her attack very amusing and had to withhold a girlish giggle - which would have horrified her had it escaped her when witnesses were around. Had he expected this to be playful? If he wanted playful, he should have chosen another girl.

"Sorry, did that hurt?" She couldn't resist teasing, and began to stalk around him, watching him closely. He swiped at her, but she launched herself away, moving further out to circle him. She knew she should probably attack again, but a prey - in this case, an opponent - constantly moving made things difficult, and even though he had already missed twice, she wasn't about to under estimate him yet.

After all, as serious a duel as it was, this could be rather fun...

Xennek just shook his head at her, "Haha. Very funny." Muttering under his breath the lion had to keep his guard up as she circled him. Sheesh. This must be what prey felt like when surrounded by a pack. But despite his failure to keep up with this lioness today Xennek found himself having fun. His midnight gaze looked over to the right of the female and he thoughtfully moved slowly.

How should he go about this?

He couldn't keep biding his time, he had to move. Nodding the lion tensed his body and leapt towards the female determined to pin her down. If he could just get her in reach then he could do something finally! Instead the loose sand beneath his paws threw him again and Xennek only felt air. Shaking his head he twisted again so that he could face her. What was wrong with him today? Was he really getting this rusty?

Kasi leapt out of the way of his pounce, grateful that he had missed. She was faster at times, yes, but she had a feeling he probably had more muscle behind his frame than she did, though she trained often she was only a young adult - she still had a long way to go to really gain experience and strength.

Twisting to face him, she launched herself forward before she could second guess her move - and hopefully before he had noticed she had moved back towards him.

Something must have gone wrong though, because when she landed, she felt the sand and not the furry hide of the male she had intended to catch. She turned back to scan for him, locking her gaze on his red and black pelt, trying to figure out what had happened and why she had missed.

She hated missing. She'd rather get bruised and battered by the end of a fight than have missed a single hit. Though she was thankful for being less injured these days, since her body only had so much strength to repair itself with, with the drought lingering over the lands.

This time he was ready for it. Xennek's gaze narrowed as she threw herself towards him and with ease of experience the lion dropped down and rolled his body out of the way. Hah! See if she would get a hit in on him again. Still he couldn't help but to grin over at her.

Who said he could play around a bit now that she had slipped up a little in this duel?

"Are you going blind now?" He teased lightly, "I'm over here not there." Yet while he teased his body was tense and his gaze was else where. Surveying his opponent and the area around them. Surely there was a better way to fight then just charging at each other like this. Come on, Xennek. You can do better than this.

The jerk had ducked! Ooh, why hadn't she allowed for that? She should have just pounced at his legs and not aimed for his head like she had. Stupid, stupid, she scolded herself inwardly, and returned to circling him.

"Just checking if you were still awake," she tried to excuse, tossing her head and looking confidently back at him. "You haven't done much yet! Still waiting for that 'duel' you promised me."

She clenched her claws in the dirt, wincing slightly as the dry and hot sand rubbed up against her saw paws. Walking in the desert had rubbed them raw and running around duelling was making it worse. No matter! She would not let that hold her back.

Xennek grinned at her, "Oh I'm awake, don't worry." At her retort the lion shrugged, "What can I say? I must take a while to warm up in this type of situation. Don't worry I'll try harder." He gave her a look before moving again. This time he was still biding. He saw her wince and was suddenly feeling the weight of the desert heat on his back. He didn't know how well he could do after all. Stupid drought. How could he fight with so much dragging him down? His spirit for the fight was fading. His body kept pushing against him, angry at him for pushing it so far. Still he was stubborn. He would see this through to the end.

But the best was to let her come to him. He was tired of this chase. It was a fight not a race! "Well? You going to do anything?" He asked suddenly stopping and looking over at her with his head tilted. But despite how relaxed he tried to appear the lion's body was tense, ready to move. Ready to attack.

Kasi scowled at his taunt and pushed aside the pain in her paws. Do something? She had been doing practically all the fighting in this duel and he had the nerve to say that? Ugh!

She was frustrated at her own inability to hit him and the pain in her paws, so she threw herself forward without really thinking. She missed him completely, she realised while still in mid air and landed heavily on the ground. Her paws stung as each grain of sand grated along the sensitive pads.

She groaned slightly, but bounced back to face him, prepared to keep going. Her mouth felt dry, and her paws ached, but she was never one to backdown from a fight. She tensed and kept her gaze firmly on him.

Xennek grinned. It appeared that his opponent was growing a bit frustrated. Though admittedly he was beginning to feel the same way. The drought's obvious effect on his body was showing and already he was out of energy. This was awful. But watching the lioness made Xennek smile despite his frustration. She was definitely an dedicated soldier.

But he knew better than to push their bodies in this situation.

"Alright." The lion shook his head at her, "You win." His dark blue eyes glittered with warmth, "I took a hit today and can't move much more." It was true, his paws were beggining to throb with each step and every muscle in his body screamed for rest. For water. So without hesitation he began to move. Slowly walking past her, Xennek spoke without pausing. "Tell you what. I enjoyed this - I'll be here tomorrow evening as well. We can duel again then if you want." Without waiting for her answer the lion slipped away into the shadows.
