I'm watching this and reading, not knowing what to think. A glow in the dark dog that's been cloned. Kinda sounds wrong, but after they said what it could lead to, idk what to think.

So what do you all think?

Hopefully I'm not late like I was on stuff like, Nyan cat and Trololol.....

Pretty nifty news.

Honestly, if they didn't do it someone else was going to as well. With early research and our first steps into genetic engineering, the early creations are going to seem pretty useless. Same thing happened with steam power, and look where it got us? Even the internet was seen the same way, but it's porn collection tends to make people not take it as seriously. razz

I'm fine with genetic tinkering so long as these things are kept out of the eco system, and by that I mean things that are not easily controlled. Plants come to mind, with companies like Monsanto doing highly questionable if not downright disgusting things. Yeah, I really want there to be regulation for this stuff.

It does remind me of something. I want the entire copyright law rewritten so that, while the code itself is copyrighted, the thing that uses the code is not. Why? Currently, farmers have been sued and bankrupted by companies like Monsanto because their plants crossbred with the farmer's. Now imagine this same thing is applied to fixed genetic diseases in people. The company now owns that person and their reproductive rights.

...Crazy ramblings, but it's a legitimate fear given current trends...

oooh they got dogs too now? I'd only heard of the glow in the dark cats (that glow red under UV and whatnot). Yeah, most always they are cloned, I don't know how well they breed (they be secretive about that). I think it's cool, probably a little wrong on the side but who's gonna stop em really?

My question is why they're doing it with so many different animals. They've already proved it can be done with multiple species. I don't believe the point was to make as many glowing freak animals as they can, but to use the method for other purposes.

Pricey consumer goods, pretty much. Inevitably some company out there is going to start selling designer pets...even more designer than they currently are now.

I thought it was bad enough when they were injecting dye into chicken eggs to cause the chicks to hatch in different colors due to altering their feather (as well as skin) pigmentations.. Fun pets, until they grow up, and (Legend of Zelda fans will get the joke) you too can have your very own fully-grown blue Cucoo.. Or so they would, if not for the fact once the chicks became pigment-altered chickens, those same chickens were returned to pet stores nationwide because they were no longer "cute", thus causing a government crackdown/ban on the practice..

Imagine glow-in-the-dark chicks though, once they grow up and are no longer "cute" or "fun" you too can partake in KFC's limited-edition 24-piece bucket of *BAD PUN ALERT!!* GlowSticks.

They also make GITD mice. I want one! whee
And I read an article once about a scientist injecting weird colors into a pregnant dog to make her have rainbow puppies. They were so cracking cute! x3

Ooh~ I'd really would like to 'glow', if I knew for a fact it doesn't hurt or constantly itch!

I suspect the goal is to use GFP or RFP to tag various genes or cellular processes of interest, and try to use this to gain a better understanding of metabolism etc.

Same reason you have rats whose brain cells can be switched on or off by specific frequencies of light. It's for the science.
