So I came across an interesting fact I had never known before- .30-30 Winchester has the same diameter and casing length as .308 Winchester: 7.62x51mm.

Now, here's my question- if their dimensions are the same, is it possible for a .308 rifle to fire .30-30? Or is there some difference between the rounds that would prevent this?

.303 British and 7.62x54r are only off in their respective dimensions by, like, 2mm in length. However, looking at them, they're drastically different. The same is true of .30-30 and .308, as seen here. The neck is farther down, the case is thinner, and let's not forget the rim. Look how similarly different .303 (far left) is from x54r (second from left) in this picture.

I thought the .308 was longer. Anyway I tend to think about the 5.56 and the .223. If I recall the physical dimensions are near identical, but 5.56 has more head pressure which will result in kB if you try firing it in a weapon designed for .223.

There's something else about the 5.56... maybe the case wall is thicker? The case is ever-so-slightly different, but not in a way you'd readily notice. And it's not guaranteed to explode, it's just more likely.
