Laertes was feeling rather impatient today. As he sat atop a small rock formation, the dark lion fidgeted with his front paws, occasionally looking up to search the horizon for any shapes that might be approaching the Suka’Fumo.
There was reason for his nervousness – and it was a really good one. Daizee’s belly had been growing in size with each day and it was clear the cubs would be born soon. His excitement had been growing exponentially but so had his fears. Would they be alright? Would they be healthy? How many were coming? Would they be okay with all the rumors going around…? Would they all be purple. Oh, Gods! He hoped they all had at least one spot of purple on them. And would Daizee be alright as well? It was her first litter, after all, and they hadn’t exactly planned for it.
The dark lion sighed, making a few lines in the rock with his claws. He had to get ride of his nervousness before he returned to Daizee’s side. The last thing he wanted was to make her even more nervous than she was probably feeling already.

Laud was getting annoyed... well more so than usual. He had been traveling for some time now and hadn't come across anyone to sell his wares. His gorgeous mane was slowly loosing its luster and volume as the sun beat down on him making his body... shudder... sweaty. Honestly it had only been dawn a few minutes, or what felt like minutes, ago.
Golden eyes took in his wears. What he wouldn't give for better material as well as beads. He wanted and expected the best. He sniffed with distaste at this semi-best furs and necklaces. As another hour went by and still no sign of life Laud was getting pissed, honestly! At least there was trees in this foresty area inside of the flat lands that were the rogue lands. Which he couldn't tell if he was on rogue lands or another part entirely.
((His name is Laud'Kuryba))

So well did he blend with the foliage around him that Laertes barely noticed the male in the distance. In all honestly, he heard the green lion long before he actually saw him.
“Halt!” the Guard called out somewhat brusquely before he caught himself. Just because he didn’t recognize the lion it didn’t mean he wasn’t a Merchant he hadn’t seen before. He certainly seemed to have a few trinkets of the sort. And even if he wasn’t part of the pride, there really was no reason to be rude to the poor fellow. “You’re crossing the borders of the Suka’Fumo pride, friend.”

Kur gave a girly-shriek, nono wait manly MANLY yell. Yeah much better. The voice broke him from his internal bitching about his appearance. Finally, someone! Frowning he took in the other male once he found where it was coming from. How degerating to have someone see him not in his perfect state. The word 'friend' made his eyebrow rise in mocking surprise. Huh, how interesting. He thought to himself before clearing his throat speaking with a charming tone.
"Ah yes, right. Terribly sorry but Suka'Fumo you say? Can't say I've heard of the place before." He edged cautiously closer. " Am I by chance welcome to sell my business on this land? You see I design furs or jewelry for lions and/or felines. They are best suited for my work." He puffed himself up as best as he could, trying to look professional and not some bedrangled wet sack-of-sadness. He eyed the other male, "You know, you would look fabulous in dark furs. Hmmm." Ideas and patterns started swirling in his head.

Laertes had to feel a little sorry for startling the stranger like that – for it was clear he was stranger to the pride, not just because his words had so implied but because he didn’t have any brown feathers behind his ear. But he seemed to share such a great an affinity towards the pride’s artistic ways and that certainly couldn’t be ignored. Looking much more at ease, the Guard even looked around at his own coat when the other male mentioned getting something for himself – an idea that had indeed crossed his mind before on several occasions. “If your words are true, you would be welcomed to join us. The Suka’Fumo is a pride that might suit you. It is a well organized place, full of life and amusement. We have Merchants going in and out on a daily basis, looking for furs and trinkets to bring back to the pride. The Costumers and Tinkers take those wares and created elaborate adornments for everyone to enjoy. And we have the Theater, where our Actors perform a great number of plays.” He was used to greeting strangers at the border and talking about the pride but the Guard chose to first address the things that might interest the green lion.
“Actually, the Suka’Fumo seems like the perfect match for your craft. But, of course… if you do not wish to join, you are still welcomed to trade with our Merchants. We have a large group of strong lions who do the hunting for the whole pride so we don’t sell anything we create amongst ourselves. Everything we create is given for free.” Laertes didn’t create anything really, on the contrary. He had very little sensitivity regarding any kind of crafting skills. But he already considered himself very much part of the pride – he had a mate now! – a so he was happy using the plural. "I'm Laertes, by the way. One of the pride's Guards."

Kur watched as the other checked himself out and listened to the other talk. "Huh, that does sound pretty tempting to join such an interesting pride." He flicked his tail with indecision as he thought of the pros and cons. Be in a pride with support as well as lackies... being alone have no support and goodluck on getting noticed or promoted to the highlife. Then his eyes gleamed at the competition at being top designer, he did love a good challenge. "Ooooh." He purred out at the thought of a theatre and having his works on full display for all to see.
Then the words 'free' stalled his thought process and he raised an eyebrow at the idea of doing such hard work for free. Ah well he thought while shrugging his shoulders he could work around that somehow. "Laertes." The name rolled off his tongue. "Interesting name, I am Laud'Kurybo." Kur bowed in greeting. "A guard you say? Huh you certainly have the muscles. Now, are there any rituals I have to perform inorder to be accepted here? And would you know where a lion can pamper himself after bouts of travel?"

“You would only be required to meet the King as he is the only one who can give you permission to stay with us. Nothing more. But it really shouldn’t be a problem considering your interests.” Laertes smiled a little when he heard his name being repeated and he chuckled lightly when the other male mentioned his muscles. “I’m afraid I am a lion of very few talents. There are not many tasks that would fit me… even though I didn’t have to work at all to be honest.”
He paused, tilting his head a little, happy that the green lion was interested. “I am perhaps giving you the impression that we have the most peaceful but exciting pride in existence where everyone lives happily without problems or tension.” he paused again, taking a deep breath.
“There is more to the Suka’Fumo than what I’ve told you, of course. And before you make a decision, I am obliged to explain things a little further.” This was always the hardest part for Laertes. How did you tell someone they could join on the basis of becoming second-rate members destined to serve the upper class? “There is an old custom that we uphold in this pride. All lions that possess the color purple on their coats are considered to be of the upper class. I initially joined the pride as a Noble but later chose to take on a more physical role as you can see. But that wasn’t required of me, on the contrary. The amount of purple on my coat gave me an instant level of respect and recognition I did not expect to find. This is an important part of the Suka’Fumo daily life, the strict class division. Those without purple must show deference towards the nobility at all times, especially towards males. There is a place where the rules aren’t enforced in the same way and some lions cut all ties and join that group. But that wouldn’t really fit your crafts, I think. Do you still wish to join? I can take you to the King now and tell you more on the way.”

' The King huh?' Kur thought about the possibilities of getting royalty to promote his wears. "Right, right very helpful. Ah so basically just eye candy I get you now." Kur almost laughed. "Ah no, noillusions of grandeur my friend. What is life without its little hiccups so to speak." Well crap. He was going to get a complex by being in this pride and he frowned at the negative thought of having no purple on his fur or his eyes. He was the best, he would over come this... issue of color.
"Hmm," He ponder for a few minutes it was after all a lifemaking decision and required some thought before just jumping in all willy-nilly. "Yes. Bring me to your King." He paused and with somewhat of a difficulty spoke out, "Please."

Ah, good. It seemed getting a better understanding of the pride hadn’t discouraged the green male. It would be pointless to lure newcomers into the Suka’Fumo if they were to leave upon finding the true nature of the pride.
“Very well, Laud’Kuryba. I shall take you to the presence of Bwana, - hopefully - our King.” Laertes chuckled before letting out a roar that would indicate the nearby Guards that he had found a potential member and required someone to cover his post. He would walk slowly, taking the time to get to know the lion a little better before his meeting with the King to ensure that the other male wasn’t hiding any unsavory intentions. After all, it was rather convenient that someone who fit so perfectly in the Suka’Fumo would suddenly appear at its borders by accident. But such coincidences were a natural part of life and Laertes wasn’t doubting the stranger just yet. That optimism wasn’t necessarily foolish even if he was taking Laud, a complete stranger, to the presence of Bwana. Because even if the green male did have hidden intentions, Laertes figured the none would involve a risk the safety of the King and the blue-eyed lion pitied anyone who would try to show anything other than the utmost respect in front of Bwana when his bodyguard was looming close. Heh! And Laertes would be there as well – although the massive black bodyguard with the unyielding gaze would serve as a much better deterrent in his opinion. Oh, maybe he could pay a visit to Daizee on his way back… he was rambling inside his head wasn’t he?
“This way, friend.” And with a friendly grin, the dark Guard made his way back to the heart of the pride.

He watched as the other male, Laertes, seemed to be having an internal conversation with himself. It was the flickering emotions that crossed his face that gave Laertes away, Kur was good at reading others... well sometimes... okay rarely but when he could he sensed it. "Alright, lets shove off Laertes." He spoke calmly but paused to look around- ah. There we go! "One second, I need to make myself presentable." He gracefully walked over to the watering hole wash up and style his mane appropriately. Kur turned around and walked back to follow Laertes. "Now, we can make our way to the king."
And so begun the first step towards his new life in Suka'Fumo. What a journey~
END. (thanks mogami biggrin )
