[This is backlogged some, set before Iirte became heavy with her litter. Zara has been approved for her duels before the breeding was picked.] She had finally found them, the soldiers that her father had told her so much about when she was young. Travels had brought her through the Savanna and into the desert. With brows turned downward and a confident smile on her face, Zara stepped, ever so lightly on the hot sand, further into the barren land that through others she had found to be the lands of the 'Firekin'. She had every intention of joining their ranks and not to back down until she had done just that. This was her dream, her goal and there was no way she'd let it slip out from under her paws just like the wind. Though it was slightly strange. The petite lioness was sure that she was within their borders and yet she had not seen a single lion who matched anything from any of the stories she had heard.

It had been a long, grueling day for Iirte Aasa - and it had hardly even begun yet. Between the drought draining their resources and her insistance on working as much as possibly, she was living in a perpetual state of exhaustion. Her night with Xennek had helped to refresh her at the very least, but that was far too long ago, and she was nearly at her limit once again. But even with all her fatigue, she refused to allow herself to just take a break. She would push through and persevere - just as any other member of the Firekin would.
Perhaps it was because of her exhaustion that her patrol was taking a bit longer than normal today, but for all the longer it took her she was carefuly not to miss a thing. Not even a stray lizard escaped her keen eyes - and it was glaringly obvious when she spotted an unfamiliar lion just inside the pride's border. Her lips pulled into a frown at the sight and she quickly made her way over, stopping a scant few lengths away from the stranger - a lioness.
"What brings you to these lands, stranger?"

The blistering sun beat down onto the ground beneath her. Traveling for so long had left the lioness' body weary but spirit soaring as her eyes finally caught sight of the other lion approaching her. Her mind was obviously slowed from the heat as Zara had not even noticed her until the other had stopped not too far from her being. A small sigh of relief passed her mouth. At least she had not made to charge her, at least not yet. Though she matched every story her father ever told her. Was this one of them? It had to be!
Zara’s mouth turned from a disappointed frown to a more serious face, or at least as much as she could muster as she attempted to hide her own glee. “What brings me here is my wish to join your ranks.” She replied, looking the other lioness over a bit more, nodding slightly even without her notice. This had to be the place or at least she hoped lest she look like a fool for wanting to join nothing or gods forbid; the wrong pride.

Iirte wasn't surprised to here the reason the other lioness was on these lands - one would be crazy to come to them in the midst of such a drought without the intention to join the ranks of the pride that dwelled here. Even so, she took a moment to glance the other lioness over. She was the right coloring, and she certainly looked like she had the mindset of a Firekin. Truly, she would find it easy to fit in amongst them. But first...
"If you wish to join, then first you must duel me. If you win, or we draw, you will have earned your right to stay within these lands."
The lioness smirked, crouching down and readying herself for battle. Her muscles coiled taught and she weighed herself on the shifting sands beneath her. She doubted the other lioness was familiar with the terrain, but there was still the matter of her fatigue. If anything, the two of them were on equal ground at this moment, for they each had some form of advantage in the fight.
"Now come! Show me the fire that burns within you!"

Roll: 3 - Hit!
Zara's muscles clenched, body poised as she crouched lower to the ground. Her paws shifted awkwardly on the hot sands, a feeling she had never felt before now, at least not in this way. This was the moment all those play fights with her father would surely come in handy. Other then him, the lioness had never truly fought another though this was a duel and not an actual fight to the death...right? Even if it was, it was unlikely she could live with the shame of letting herself down and her father down.
She sprang, claws extended and mouth opened, fangs exposed as she moved to close the gap between the two, a burning passion to do nothing more then make her father proud pushing her on. Not deadly, but a desire to win. To prove herself. In all of her play duels, she was told to never go for her father's neck or belly, the weakest spots and some of the deadliest, and neither were points that she aimed for, instead, it was the shoulder, the legs. Just immobilize her and there would be no more duel.

Iirte allowed a low growl to rumble up in her throat when she saw the other lion crouch, although the noise was certainly not meant to be intimidating or threatening. No, it was anticipation that vibrated through her chest, making her body thrum with life and energy; energy she hadn't even realized she'd still possessed. She readied herself for the other's attack, but already the drought had taken its toll on her abilities.
A blink of the eye and already she had missed seeing the other spring forward for her first attack. A paw landed heavily on her shoulder before she could dart out of the way, and she grunted from the impact before darting away. She was quick to roll her shoulder, stretching the muscle and testing for further injuries before springing forward to swipe at the other's paws, her claws still safely sheathed.

Zara was careful with her overgrown claws, taking care not to accidentally actually harm the lioness. This was test of strength, endurance, not who could tear the other up more. A snarl made it’s way out of her throat as the swipe missed, the newcomer back-stepping out of harms way, though she was getting careless as it had nearly let her paws become victims in this. That was not something she wanted to experience so early on; the force of one of these lions on her paws. They already burned enough as it was.
This was far more exciting then she had imagined it to be. She felt alive. More alive then ever before. This is where she belonged. She was born for this. Zara lips raised, teeth bared, she made her way again, aiming again for her shoulders, though for the one she had not already impacted.

Roll: 2 - Bide!
Although the other had managed to dart away from Iirte's attack, the guard could not say she had done the same. Once again she felt a paw impact her shoulder - although thankfully, it was the one that hadn't already been hit. She growled and quickly darted away from the other lioness, flicking her tail and pressing her ears against her head.
This time, she did not attack outright. Instead she kept her distance, pacing in the sands and waiting for an opening. With two sore shoulders, she could not risk darting in recklessly, lest the lioness' next blow weaken her further. Although this was a duel, the fact remained that she still had duties to attend to once it was over. And it wouldn't do for her to allow herself to be weakened enough that she would have to take it easy.
She was a Firekin. She didn't know the meaning of taking it easy.

Knowing when to take it easy might have actually proved useful as Zara's chest was heaving though a smile was plainly seen on her face. She was enjoying the excitement. A real duel, not a training match, but it was real. The only thing better would be to actually fight with the intent to kill which this was not nor would she allow herself to act in such a way, or at least to the best of her abilities.
Again Zara charged, paw raised to strike once more, though it was beginning to take a toll so where her aim really was anyone's guess. Everything hurt. Her body was not used to this heat, the sand on her paw pads or the way she was pushing herself in this duel. "You're not holding back are you?" She called out, almost mockingly. "I thought I was fighting a warrior of the desert!"

Iirte was quicker to attempt to dodge this time, but she could not prevent the other lioness' paw from hitting one of her haunches as she slipped past. The blow made her grunt deep in her chest, and her tail lashed with agitation as pain settled into her leg. She grit her teeth and once again skirted out of range, her mouth hanging open and dragging in deep breaths. The heat was beginning to get to her, and she tried to ignore the uncomfortable dryness in her mouth. She had hours yet until it was her time to drink from the mud hole.
"An honorable warrior would not hold back! Rest assured, I fight with all my strength!"
Even so, she made no move to get within range once again. She needed a moment to recover from the harsh blows she'd already sustained. Her lips pulled back slightly and her nostrils flared as she pulled in deeper breaths, savoring what little moisture the air had to offer to her. Not yet... Wait until her next attack...

Zara fell forward, stumbling over her own paws as she glanced passed the other lioness. She recovered as quickly as she could, turning herself to snarl back at Iirte, fangs bared. Despite her paw connecting, the horrible hit made it feel like a miss. This heat was horrible, and fighting under the blistering sun could not be good for either of them.
“As I’m sure you are such a warrior.”
Her body curved slightly in a circle, silver orbs keeping sight on Iirte. She tried to step as lightly as she could on the broiling sand that was beginning to sting as the pads under her feet. Again she made move towards the other, though this time, she was beginning to falter, getting weaker as the sun rose higher overhead.

This time when the other moved to attack, Iirte was quick to dodge. The only thing the lioness managed to touch was the very tip of her tail, a miss by any standards. Almost as if to mock, the tail twitched as soon as the guard was out of range. She rolled her shoulders once again, willing away the ache that had begun to settle into them before darting forward. Rather than biding her time once again, she chose to attack.
Her paw whipped out, aiming towards the other's shoulder. She wasn't about to go down without a fight; not now or ever!

Silver eyes widened as suddenly a paw came towards her. It was just barely that Zara was able to avoid it, nearly tumbling onto the grains underneath her in her haste. Her jaw hung open, panting heavily while she attempted to recover her breath, hoping for a bit of time to do so at least though her eyes stayed on Iirte the entire time. There was no way she could let her out of her sight. After all the stories, these lions were a force to be reckoned with. One look away and it could be a loss for her.
She waited, her muscles aching from unfamiliar strain under the stress of having to react and function in such ways. She could not lose this. It meant too much to her, but she pushed herself too hard at the beginning while the other have waited, biding time while she had tired herself out. A good strategy.

Iirte didn't allow the miss to bother her too much. While the other lioness bided her time, she launched herself forward again. This time, she brought her paw across the other's face, and while her claws were still sheathed the blow was heavy enough to be dizzying at the very least. Before the other could retaliate she darted away, crouching down and lashing her tail behind her. She remained like that a scant few moments before getting to her paws and smirking.
"Sorry about that. I couldn't dare admit defeat without getting in at least one good blow. You're a more than worthy adversary."

End Result Zara: 12 | Iirte: 9
Zara had already been weakened on her feet and the blow sent her stumbling to the side, her eyes flashing back to look at Iirte. She had taken her eyes off her for a moment to rest them and that had been her downfall or at least that’s what she appeared to think until the other lioness spoke. “Defeat? You mean, I won?” Had she really proved herself against them? Was she really one of them now?
One eye closed quickly, squinting shut. Her head spun while she still attempted to recover but Zara couldn’t help but smile. “Zara,” She suddenly said, “My name is Zara. We began so suddenly, I didn’t even introduce myself. And...I'm honestly not sure what happens now. I didn't think I'd get this far.”
