In which we declare war on unknown forces
And stretch out an unforgiving arm...
Quote: Kidondo did not like this. He did not like this at all. He was used to being able to keep his temper sated and this rush of emotions driving through him was a strange and unwanted feeling. He felt as if the threads of his control were wavering, felt as if he wanted to lash out and kill something to release all this pent up rage that burned in his chest. But those he would gladly have taken his anger out on were far from this place now; dwindling out there in the shadows. Oh but they would get what was coming to them. Oh, they would.
As he stepped out across the sand to where the Firekin had begun to gather, his dark claws dug needlessly deep into the sand - his subtle way at attempting to vent before addressing the people. The muscles in his body were held tense; his face hard as stone. Lifting from the darkness of his mane, his ears turned this way and that, trying to seek out voices of those he was most familiar with, perhaps. Either way, a single look at the lion would have spoken volumes.
He was not himself.
Only a week ago he had supported his grandson back home to safety. Only a week ago he had looked his daughter, Azar, in the eye and told her that everything was going to be fine. But it was not fine. Nur’yu was dead and the perpetrators were still very much alive.
The red lion vaulted up onto the flat surface of one of the rocks jutting out from the gold and threw back his head. The roar that uttered forth from his jaws was meant to be a call to those in the heart of the lands, but half-way through it transformed into something rather more angry; echoing harshly in the mouths of the dens gaping their way. And, when it was done, he felt somewhat hollow inside; as if a little of him had fled with that call. A piece that might have been lost forever. His tail whipped back and forth and though he felt perhaps it would have been better to sit, he found he could not. He was in no mood for sitting.
Then his head turned, just a little, to catch sight of No, giving her a glance - just a brief glance - that he seemed to draw strength from.

Hey bro, and welcome to another firekin event!
It has been a week since the firekin were attacked by an unknown force. A week since a group of lost Hongshan arrived at the prides borders, making tension between the two groups hit a fever pitch. The borders are secured, but lack of water has weakened many of the forces. Although many things are uncertain, one thing is clear: the firekin must make a choice. Do they support their new allies? Do they take action against an enemy they do not even know?
Well, they're firekin. Of course something is going to be done! The only answer now is what...
THIS RP INCLUDES SOME BIG CHANGES TO THE PRIDE.
Even if you do not wish to RP, I do suggest you read over the proceedings. At the end of the RP there will be a super important OOC message from us about how we will be going forward. Pleeeeaseeeee read. Failure to comply with the rules we set out will make us super sad face, for cereal.
Quote: Rules:
@@@@ 1. Only accepted firekin members and Hongshan may post in this RP. However, newbies may make non-SOA NPC animals, such as lizards, mice, or other desert creatures to witness. @@@@2. You may have your firekin voice their opinions about the pridal decision openly. @@@@3. Always remember to respect other people in RP, even if your characters do not get along! @@@@4. These threads sometimes move VERY fast. Do not take it personal if someone misses something you've said. @@@@5. Ask questions IC if you can! If not, they will be answered at the end of the RP in an FAQ.
But what about prizes!
During the event, we'll be giving out a lovely firekin lady! You do not need a duel for her to join the pride, but you DO need a completed JRP for certing. A raffle will likely be held at the end for everyone who has yet to win something. She is not a Hongshan.
In addition, I'll be raffling a free headshot to everyone who enters, regardless of wins!

The sound of Kidondo's roar echoed about the rocks and crevasses of the council. The sort of roar that could shake bone and scatter enemies. But ever at his side, the black cat stood firm as the lions of the pride assembled. It wasn't often that the entire pride was summoned for any particular matter. The last had been to vote on water rations.
Today, there would be no vote.
In stark contrast to Kidondo's apparent anger, No sat looking cold. Stony really, as though her grey fur were well carved rock. Occasionally her claws pulsed against the rock beneath her, but other than that she was motionless. Her jade eyes seemed piercing, watching those who gathered. If there was anger, it was not of the sort most firekin knew. No was not a creature who reacted to her rage with violence. Some might say it would have been for the better.
Once the majority of the group had filed in, it was the black cat who rose from where she was seated. Kidondo was still thrust forward over the group, and she took her spot quietly beside him. When she spoke, her voice was terse and unflinching. "As you are well aware, last week we found ourselves in the center of a dispute that was not our own. A dispute that has cost us the blood of our pride, and perhaps, something just as precious."
"Some of you are hoping I have gathered everyone here to offer you a person responsible. To parade out the Hongshan who, unwilling or not, may have been complicit in this attack," her nose crinkled. The tips of her fangs showed. "Firekin demand blood for acts against us. We demand justice for those injured. And those who have died."
She paused for a moment. A shade of emotion across the black cat's face. The death of their grandson had, as of yet, been a private matter. "Firekin demand blood for acts against us. But sometimes, blood is not enough." Her neck straightened. "No amount of parading or scapegoating is going to repair this problem. We aligned ourselves to the Hongshan. We are firekin. We do not need to fear who we offer our allegiance to."
"So I ask you then. What is to be done with a pride that thirsts for ever-dwindling water? To enemies who do not know what they should rightly fear?" Her voice echoed with a hint of the rhetorical. From the stony look in her eyes, it seemed the black cat had already settled on an answer.

Kosuke spared a glance at Shula, who still recovered from her injuries. She was much better than she had been, but he still worried. The male squared his shoulders, then stepped forward, gold eyes narrow. "I think we all know the answer to that question, and the answer is that we must strike back and find the filthy cowards who hide in the shadows to attack us! We are the FIREKIN, we fear NOTHING!" His tail curled as he looked around, listening for any who voiced a similar opinion.Savitri rose to her paws, having been sitting. "If we're going to war, we need to put the cubs somewhere safe first, protect the future of the pride!" The pure-white lioness just had no idea where to STICK them... Her eyes passed down to two of her cubs at her paws, who looked up with fear in their large eyes. Despite what Kosuke had said... She DID fear. She feared for their safety, as well as their cousins, and all the other cubs. "Does anybody know of a safe place, somewhere our faceless cowardly enemies won't find them?"

Ute was upset. Things were not going well for her people. Family had been hurt. Water was scarce. She had made a few enemies, as far as she was concerned. She was afraid for her mother; whom was standing next to her. They both stared up at the Regents, Zii's tail curled around her daughter and her daughters was around hers. Zii knew that Ute felt that perhaps some of this had been brought on by her allowing the group into the pride; but did not want to openly talk about it right now. She just wanted to have someone holding her.
Ute and Zii didn't know what the answer was going to be. Ute leaned against her mother and whispered quietly in her ear. "Mother... no matter what... I will protect you first. She said, her blue eyes squeezed shut and her head lightly bowed. They could both guess what was going to happen.
"No matter what Ute. I love you." Zii responded quietly, her own golden eyes looking to her child and taking in the image of her. She was so strong.

Only a few minutes ago, Seide had a conversation with Veru. It was not the pleasant chatter where Veru attempted to annoy her, and the large, cool lioness pretended to ignore it. Seide took death with the same outward neutrality that bespoke her profession. But, inwardly, her gut was beginning to twist.
"I'll be close by," she offered the mostly white lion. There was no hesitation, then, as she bumped her forehead against his. Maybe Veru didn't need the comfort, and maybe he was better off than Seide was imagining, but her mother had always drowned she and her sisters in affection when things went wrong. It was not a lesson she forgot.
There were other lions gathering already for an announcement she'd already known. Breaking into a trot, Seide made her way through loose sand and abutments of solid rock. She joined her Uncle and Aunt in law. She imagined their eyes must have been greying by now, with the constant stress. There was no outlet in site.
Perhaps war would give the Firekin hope. More likely, they would harass their leaders with questions until their personal panic died down or grew to an intolerable level. Seide's eyes searched the crowd. They found Veru, and she did her best to form a smile. It did not come out well.
"This, Savitri, is the safest place. Do not forget that."

Ali Baba had taken a risk that morning. Upon attempting to depart from the cave, his father cried out, almost desperately, and demanded that he be allowed to take part in the gathering. Sinbad had made the mistake, several years back, in attacking a god that had crossed their borders. Whether he knew what he faced at the time or not was irrelevant, the result had been the same. Sinbad had been cursed. His personality had done a complete turnaround and now rather than the baleful, arrogant sire that Ali Baba and his siblings had grown up with, the lion had become a sobbing, whimpering, humiliated creature barely worthy of being called firekin. There would have to be something done about that but with Kenna having her own affairs and limited resources within the pride itself, 'doing something' was becoming more and more difficult.
He could hardly refuse the older male from hearing out what the leaders had to say and what the pride would respond with, but Ali made certain to keep several strides ahead of his old man.
He paused as the others gathered and took a moment to sweep through the gathered members. Mouthing an 'ah', he continued down to join Kosuke in the sands. Of all his siblings, Kosuke had the best head on his shoulders. Many had their own families or had fallen under Azula's delusion.
"Quite the gathering...", Ali mused quietly. "Sorry to bring out a wet pelt-" He nodded over his shoulder as Sinbad loped his way down.
As No piped, Ali raised his head and took a short look around. Anyone? Not yet. He was certain everyone would have a response.
"I say we bring hell to them." He responded casually, elevating his voice so the leaders would hear him. "And take what we need to survive. There was a time such practices were used- and in those days we thrived both in numbers and in reputation."Sinbad dropped himself to a sit beside his sons and took a deep breath as he looked over the gathered numbers. His pride...they were so angry! Of course there were a few that had been wounded, maybe even some deaths. How terrible! Who would want to come and hurt them? The poor things were only doing their duty and protecting their pride after all.
Ali's cold suggestion earned a gasp and a look of horror. "We can't do that! That'd be so...heartless! We should see if they'll meet us for a civil discussion.""Shut your mouth, you're embarrassing yourself..."

She was still, to say the least riled up. She had been told to relax, to jut wait, to be patient while the regents decided what to do and now, now here they were finally making a decision. Jyotika gave a quiet growl and flickers her tail "Its to be a hunt then?" She calls, she wasn't one to hold back her words, she was ready to go, ready to claim the lives of those who dared to touch one of her children, dared to maim one of them. "We are firekin, we should not be sitting talking, it's time for action!" Ea'Pavlov sits beside his mother and shakes his head. He was worried about her, he knew she would go marching in to battle teeth and claws out and ready to take down what ever was out there. She was a tough old bird. She would probably and kill him if he said that to her face. He was willing to march out beside her, to make sure she came back alive. He stayed quiet listening to his mothers powerful words. Near by the new family of three mostly, black and white lions sat together, the large male sitting between and slightly in front of his two sisters. He had finally managed to win his duel so here he sat, taking his place protecting his sisters and being filled in with quiet whispers. It sounded like there was a war on the horizon. He liked the idea of that. He stays quiet, watching the creatures around them as they voiced their opinions. Tails lashed every where it seemed and Xagans tail automatically joined in. He liked a good brawl. Geei snorts and looks to her youngest sibling "You'll be staying here Adalie." She whispers, her voice kept low "You would get in our way, stay behind and see to the wounded." She snipps. Adalie grumbles at her sister but nods. She was no fighter, strong enough to win a single fight but in a battle, in a war, she would probably get hurt, or worse killed, especially with her siblings around trying to make sure she wasn't getting dead. Haru moves closer to the calling regents, his tail held high his ears tilted forwards. He felt it was time for him to take some action. The firekin had let him come home, they had accepted him and his lady mate and now they were calling for war, calling for assistance. Haru was a strong lion and he would go to war with them, happily. Tyson moves over to his father. He had always been a small lion but he had been paying attention. Lots of things had been happening and he wasn't going to be left behind. He could be a feirce creature when the need arose. 'I'm with you father." He smiles at Kosuke, "For mother."

Moto'spaki was, of course, among the lions gathered there that day. And like everyone else, he was hardly a happy camper. The lion wasn't one to lose his temper, and though it remained intact, he too felt very angry over what had happened. He wasn't one to talk much, but he figured if there was any a time to say something, it was now.
"Kosuke is right." He agreed loudly, for any who cared to hear his opinion. "We must strike back, and show them what happens when the firekin are messed with."
Though... "Perhaps it would be wise to know more of our opponents. What have we learned from the Hongshan?"
She was hardly one for talking about politics, or anything, and her position might be a little irritating, and she lied to the side of those gathered. Kalama was more interested in watching what happened than actually participating in much decision making, but she liked the idea of war. "We could use some real fight." She said to herself, because it would hardly be smart to say it out loud. For her war was amusing, and would pass her time, for others it wasn't, and that might be enough to start a fight. Even Kalama preferred not to start a fight in such a situation.
Though Yayuka was still very much injured, and still needed to rest and recover, he had come just like any of the others. He had, after all, been attacked by these lions, and now that he'd had time to compose himself... Well, he was furious. His paw might never work the same way it had, and he held it up pathetically. He had also lost most of an ear in the fight.
So when lions talked about striking back, and war, he growled in agreement. He just hoped he'd be ready for fighting again soon. For the first time, he actually wanted some sort of payback.

Kuzaliwa`Jpi padded over the warm sand, passing several lions she knew but her thoughts were too disturbed to greet them properly, offering a simple nod of her head to each as she passed. Once near the front of the swelling gathering she brought herself to a halt, pale yellow eyes lifting to settle on the regents. The recent events from the start of the water shortage to the arrival of the newest hongshan members, and this latest attack on their own pride was enough to shake the faith of even the steadiest firekin and Kuza no longer felt sure about what was going to happen, or what they could do. It had gone from a difficult situation to a dangerous one. Sighing softly she glanced over to the side and spotted one of her brothers, Ea'Pavlov, and her mother. Turning she made her way over towards them, needing the comforting familiarity of family in this time of war.The burly young adolescent Souzan padded up to the side of the gathering, his mis-matched green eyes sweeping over the assembled lions before lifting to his grandparents. He might have been young but he was not dumb and he knew what had been going on, after all it was kind of hard to ignore it. Settling his rump on the sand he curled his tail about him, glancing round hopefully for his siblings or parents. Yet without any in sight he returned his gaze to his (slight scary) grandparents, noting the anger that fairly vibrated through Kidono. Yet it was No who always made him nervous and so he settled to watching the cold lioness, wondering what would happen, though suspecting it would be war. That was the firekin way.

Savitri gave her cousin a sour look. "And what if while we're all drawn away from the center to fight at the borders, they send somebody in to strike the pride's center? All that would be here are the sick, the injured, the cubs, and a pawfull of medics. It'd be slaughter! Unless you propose we leave a quarter of our forces here to protect them all, which could STILL be suicide."Kosuke sighed, glancing first at his son, then his brother... And then grimaced at his father. "We need to find a way to get his head fixed..." He leaned over, whispering so nobody else would hear. "Do you think if we found Finar-si, she'd be willing to help..?" His ear flicked, before he looked over to Moto'spaki, smirking a bit. He had the upper paw now.Rashmi finally arrived, dancing her way carefully through the crowd. As the white lioness got to the front where her 'mother' sat, she looked up at the regents, then over to Seide. She frowned a bit. "I think Seide is right, the cubs WOULD be safer here at the center. If we keep them in the sandstorm refuge, along with all the sick and injured, we can post the hunters and huntresses at the entrance to protect them all. Any foes trying to get past that kind of force would find themselves outmatched fast, with a new fresh lion popping up to replace any that have fallen at the entrance."

Xiāofáng had joined recently and still felt like an outsider in this incredibly close-knit pride. Yet she didn't let that stop her and she walked through the gathering like she had the right to be there, and considering she had won her challenge to enter the pride, she felt that she had all the rights of any pride-born lion. Yet this new development in her adopted pride worried the ex-rogue. She knew just how dangerous strange lions could be and these ones were strong enough to take down a member of the firekin pride... they certainly needed watching, and the pride needed to find out who these strangers where, how many of them were out there and how strong they were. Sighing softly she glanced about but saw few that she recognized. Giving Kuza a brief wave of her paw she turned to face forwards again, a concerned frown marring her expression.

Seide's eyes, which had moved elsewhere, took a slow trail back towards Savitri. They caught the other's gaze and held them. Though standing, Seide's posture was calm. Her voice was equally as neutral, though loud enough to be heard by all.
"You are making assumptions on a matter of which you yet know nothing." The red lioness' ear flicked towards No.
"While this may be a public gathering, you are still a guard, Savitri." Behind her, Seide's tail shifted and moved without noise. "You represent other guards and our military in your actions. If you cannot present yourself clearly and with respect, I will remove you from your position until you have shown you can act as a guard."

Elda was not usually one for these big gatherings. She'd much prefer to be training or on patrol or...being by herself. Unfortunately the summoning roar was not something she could easily ignore. There was meaning behind it. Anger, too, and somehow she did not think she wanted to miss what was about to happen. It had a sense of urgency about it and it stirred the blood in her veins. So, instead of moving off in the opposite direction - as she might normally have done - she pulled herself up onto her paws and moved across to where a large crowd was already gathering.
She was a large female, strong and loyal, but did not have much smarts between her ears. She was not a thinker. She was not a leader. She was an obedient grunt and so when there were times of debate, Elda had very little to say. Fortunately, where she might have backed off at such a large gathering and all the raised voices, it was one voice in particular that kept her rooted.
Seide's.
Whilst she was no longer the lioness' apprentice, the young adult still felt a kinship with the female - a bond that no one else had managed to create with her. And so, with a sharp exhale, the female moved around to get closer to her old master; moving quietly so as not to attract attention. She certainly didn't want to get caught up in any debates. She just wanted to be close to Seide in case she was needed, that was all.
Unfortunately for her, she had been spotted and by young Su, no less. The keen-eyed, political thinker was on her trail in moments, giving her tail a firm tug when her soft call did little to get her attention.
"Didn't expect to see you here." Su chirped when Elda cast a look back at long last.
Elda gave a grunt and, satisfied that she was close enough to her master, dropped into a casual sitting position on the sand.
"Well don't be like that. I think things are about to get very interesting." And the more petite - and far better groomed female - sat down next to her ogre of a friend.
