So, this was it. The legendary desert of the Firekin.

"Too ******** hot," Mkazo muttered, squinting his eyes against the sun's glare. Compared to the mountains of his birth, these lands felt like a giant forge. The sun beat down on his black pelt, promising to shed the thicker pelt he'd grown to combat the cold. It had been thin compared to his pridemates, a relic of his Firekin blood, but here? Too damn thick, and it was making him too ******** hot. He let out a low growl before beginning to pace. He was friggin' cranky, and he wanted to get this duel over with so that he could get to some shade.

As far as heat went, Moto'spaki was much more fortunate than many firekin. And, evidently, this rogue. After all, not only was it at an ideal length for this sort of climate, it was also an ideal color. White, for most part, he wasn't very bothered by the sun. The credit didn't lie entirely on his pelt, of course, he'd also had the luxury of being raised here.

So he was quite a bit calmer then Mkazo when he arrived, less irritated. But Moto'spaki was still a serious lion, and it couldn't be said he looked relaxed. Calm, but ready for the duel. "You are Mkazo, then." He greeted, and briefly mused at how this lion resembled some in his family. Especially his father, with the bright red mark on his forehead.

"Lets get this over with. Begin." He usually let the rogues start.

He probably should have dodged such a thing. Really, part of the advantage of giving the opponent the first go was it was easier to dodge this first attack, because you knew it was coming.

Still, the dark male crashed into him, forcing Spaki back a pace. He didn't stumble though, and braced himself against the other lion. He wouldn't be shoved another inch! But perhaps his stubbornness in staying put was leaving him open. Well, he'd deal with that later.

Well, this was off to a good start. Mkazo's grin had a feral edge to it as he lunged and swung with one heavy forepaw. His claws might be retracted--even he could figure that the pride wouldn't be thrilled if he went around ripping up his duelists--but he could still put a fair bit of muscle into the blow.

The paw hit him in the back of his head, and that was hardly a very nice place to be hit. Moto'spaki was glad that, at least, he was a male, and his mane offered some sort of deflection. Sort of. Well, he was quite sure it would have hurt more if he didn't have a mane.

He was still a bit dizzy from the blow, but, nonetheless, pushed against the male and raised his own paws, intent on returning the favor.

Sidestepping the older lion's swing, Mkazo barked a short laugh. "You'll have to do better than that," he taunted, before whirling around to release a strike of his own. He probably should have kept his mouth shut--one hind paw slid out from under him as he pivoted in the sand, causing him to stumble.

It wasn't that taunts really got to Moto'spaki, really. But they did make him feel extra-good when his opponent attempted to insult him, then messed up and gave him a perfect opportunity for a strike. It wouldn't be the first time a rogue had trouble with the sand, and he was happy to take advantage of it.

This was why he had a smirk on his face and he went for the blow; a paw aimed for the other male's jaw, intent on helping him the rest of the way to the floor.

Fuuuuuuuuuuckthathurt.

Spaki's blow had the intended effect, sending Mkazo crashing into the sand hard enough that--damn, was there sand in his nose now?! Shaking his head and sneezing in a vain attempt to knock loose the embedded grains, the dark lion clambered to his feet. Rather than give his opponent time to gather for another blow (and, unfortunately, refusing to give himself the same courtesy), he leapt forward with a wild swing.

He was pleased with the result of his attack, but may have enjoyed it better if he didn't need to keep on going. His opponent got up quickly enough, but there was enough warning for Spaki to evade his paw, ducking and sidestepping.

However, the wild attack of his opponent didn't exactly make him easier to approach. Not wishing to end the duel with only one blow to him, the white lion went in for a swing anyways.

Snarling, Mkazo barely ducked the paw that damn near whistled over his head. Close, too close. At least keeping pressure on the other male seemed to be doing something, so he wasn't about to let up now. He gathered for a leap...and found himself fouled up by the ******** sand again. His paws skidded and slid, causing his jump to be much shorter than he'd planned, and making him look silly besides.

"Damn it!"

Amusing as it was to watch this male flail around in the sand, it also, frustratingly, saved him from another blow from Spaki, who had been preparing to meet him head on. Now his paw just shot out and returned lamely.

"This isn't working." He said, setting his paw back down. At this point they were just throwing misses back and forth. Perhaps just because of this lame ending, he'd say this lion had lost the duel. It seemed stupid to let a lion who couldn't handle the sand become a Firekin. But fair was fair. Spaki had only actually struck him once, while he, in turn, had been hit twice. "You have won." Moto'spaki concluded, and if he was disappointed, it didn't show in his voice. He was very good at maintaining a monotone.

"I recommend you get used to the sand quickly." The firekin were, after all, at war. A fighter who couldn't even secure his footing was simply begging to be killed.

Despite having just finished a duel, he relaxed quickly. "You may follow me back, if you wish, or find your own way." He shrugged slightly, then, apparently rather uninterested in any more conversation, began to walk back towards the barracks.

It was over? The news that he'd won almost came as a disappointment--he'd hardly finished on the most impressive of notes. Almost being the key word, there...he was in, wasn't he? In a pride of warriors such as this, he would have many opportunities to impress. These thoughts could nearly be read on his face as they happened--although his expression quickly finished on a look of irritation at the mention of the sand. He was going to train until he ******** owned this footing that was like snow in its treachery...and yet was so very different. It was in his blood, and he would find it.

"Grandparents would probably have my guts for lunch if I didn't," he muttered, before he padded after Spaki.
