User Image Before his time in the pride, Don had grown wicked and cruel, solitary by nature, and self-sufficient by choice. There had been very little that had drawn any form of compassion from the brute male, as he felt others were weak for relying on anyone but themselves to survive. He had nurtured this attitude for many years on the hot savannah, fighting because he could, pushing others around because they had not the power to fend him off. And now he found himself here, in a pride with other lions, both male and female, in a place that was still strange, cold, and unnaturally rocky to him. And though it was unlike anything he had ever experienced... this place had changed him. The large lion had grown to accept company without complaint, reveled in the duties that were placed before him as a Reaver, fighting both for pleasure and out of necessity, and agreeing with their ideals. They were the strongest, they had the right to take anything they wanted. Only fools opposed a pride of this strength, and it often meant their death, at least where Don was concerned.

It was strange, he had made a home with the Stormborn. Something he had never expected to occur during his life, but he had to admit, this had been a good decision. Gradually he embraced every aspect of their way of life, even the social part. Now the pale tawny lion found himself on the outskirts of the sparring grounds, prowling for a possible place to jump in and join the other fighters. He was still relatively new, and knew very little of the Stormborn by name, and far fewer came with a face to match it with.

User Image"Heeey, cuz!" Galning called across the sparring grounds, seeing the top fluff of blond mane that he was certain belonged to his blond cousin.

He shoved and scrambled through the assemblage to pounce playfully on his cousin, with a ululating warcry: "Yaaiaiaiaiaiaiaiah!"

He knew his cousins had news, and he couldn't believe they hadn't told him first thing! He was so engrossed in this, already beginning to chatter at them and demand explanations for why he hadn't been taken with them on their most recent outing when he was such an awesome warrior and companion, that he completely failed to notice for several long moments that he had not pounced on either of his cousins.

"Ooh..." he said, scuttling away. "Sorry! Er...I don't know your name."

He had heard someone shouting crazily, though considering there were lions sparring in the area he hadn't thought much of it... until something heavy collided with him unexpectedly. Don was baffled to find himself face to face with this yammering idiot, going on about something he was quite certain he hadn't any clue over. "Of course you don't," Don agreed in a low hiss as he recovered his footing; hardly any one knew his name. One good thing had come from this: he found someone to knock around for awhile. He was obviously able bodied enough to pounce on him, so Don wouldn't feel too badly about throwing his weight around.

"What kind of jackass goes around jumping on random lions?" he continued with a harsh bark of a laugh, exposing his fangs as he did so. Idiot or not, he had certainly made a fool of himself, and Don was keen to let him know it. "Unless that's your way of looking for a fight," Don quipped, flexing his claws into the solid ground. That may not have been the case, in fact he was almost certain it wasn't with how the other had babbled, but the pale golden lion was going to make the most out of this situation and that meant a fight. Whereas his 'attacker' had scuttled away, Don closed the distance between them considerably. "It's a good day to die, friend, I suppose you best be prepared." He had grown quite attached the Stormborn's way of greeting each other, and could not keep himself from saying it now. Not that he had any intention of killing the poor fellow, but he might make a good scratching post.

"I thought you were my cousin. The front bit of your mane's the same color as his. Sort of," Galning explained as if he hadn't heard the stranger's foul-tempered replies.

But he had, and those had definitely been fighting words. Galning had spent most of his youth getting into stupid brawls over anything, not always coming out on top because of his tendency to go berserk in battle. In some lions this might have matured into some sort of ability to distinguish between good reasons to fight and bad reasons to fight, but not so with Galning. He was laughably easy to provoke into violence.

"So what kind of jackass goes around calling other lions jackasses without hearing their explanations?" he demanded, already getting riled.

His lips pulled back in an expression between a grin and a snarl and he continued to back up until his peripheral vision told him he'd found enough space for a decent sparring match. "I am so going to enjoy handing you your tail and making you eat it and your insults."

There wasn't much to think about when it came to the prospect of a fight. It was a chance to stretch your muscles, hone your skill, and hopefully embarrass you opponent somehow- but that was only the icing on the cake. What really mattered to the Don, was that he'd get the chance to spar and stretch his muscles, even if the other guy's explanation for the pouncing made sense.

"The kind that's looking for a fight, dimwit", Don replied in a snarl, though he couldn't be more thrilled with the situation. He didn't even know this guy's name, just that he wasn't running away when threatened with violence. Commendable, but expected from a stormborn lion, and exactly what Don was hoping for. Win or lose, the large golden lion wanted to stretch his claws a bit before patrol duty.

Don followed step for step, his bulky body lining up head to head until they had reached a decent spot for sparring, claws already extended and ready for action. "You're free to try, but don't choke on your own in the process!" he laughed amidst a deep growl that rumbled in his throat. It was time to do battle!

Oh, good. That was kind of what Galning had been expecting, but it was good to be sure. He'd already jumped on this lion without warning. Suddenly beating him to a bloody lump without warning would be incredibly rude.

"Heh!" Galning laughed darkly, definitely getting into the spirit of things. Oh, he was angry at being called a jackass, make no mistake, but he'd noticed that in his reply the ruby-eyed lion had as much as agreed that he was also a jackass, and that made things a little better.

His gaze shifted left and then right, making extra sure he had space to work, and then he began the super-secret awesome attack he'd been working on perfecting on his own for the past few, er, seconds. But it was an excellent move, really. He just knew it would be.

First Galning skittered to the left, and then he darted forward and to the right, deliberately overshooting his opponent so that he could launch himself straight up in the air and then come back down directly on top of his opponent, who would then be completely at his mercy. That was the plan. Right now, Galning was at the darting past part.

Don swayed on his pawed, testing his weight on each of them before hunkering down into battle position, which basically meant the tawny lion squared his shoulders and broadened his stance. He was prepared to charge forward and meet his opponent head on in a duel of strength, but was caught off-guard by the white maned lion's zig-zagging manuever. In fact, Don was such a large and bulky lion he had already begun to move to the right, as he had been planning on intercepting the other's path directly. And so when Dimwit changed course Don was stuck faltering in an attempt to reach and grab him as he moved past, which ultimately cost him precious seconds as he quarry evaded him in the other direction.

He probably figured Jackass was going to make a slash for his exposed side, and he would have been able to take that blow and lash back in reply- what he wasn't expected was the full weight of the other male to come crashing down on his back! A loud 'Hmmrph!" left his maw as he struggled to remain somewhat on his feet, though failing at it for the most part. It was all Don could do to keep himself upright, and even then it felt like his paws would buckle under him. In a desperate, and somewhat enraged attempt to get his opponent off him, Don allowed his legs to buckle as he tried to roll the lug over the side and ultimately off his back. Regardless, his teeth were snapping and his claws were flailing for any chance they might get to rip into flesh.

"Yai!" Galning cried, delighted at this victory, even though it wasn't truly victory. It was at least a success, and he was pleased by it. Obviously.

He hadn't thought much beyond what would happen if he landed on top of his opponent, and so Galning wasted a second or two trying to figure that out, and then trying to hold on as the tawny lion beneath him tried to dislodge him. Probably he shouldn't have been trying so hard to hold on, given that Don was about to roll over, or just roll him off, but he had no way of knowing that.

At least he didn't know it until it was happening and he found himself momentarily on his back with his belly almost exposed while lots of pointy bits tried to tear him up. At that point (haha) he figured out what was going on and charged straight forward once more, this time feinting as if he would try for another pass, but this time aiming for a balance-destroying collision.

He wasn't sure what came after that, but it would probably be brilliant.

He wasn't sure if this guy just innately enraged him, or if it was some special power the other male had, but Don felt like he was losing control of what could have normally been a well matched fight. Was it the fact the other male had surprised him with his tactic of... jumping? He should have known! He did pounce him before! Grumbling as he growled the tawny lion pushed himself back onto his feet, losing precious moments that caused him to be unprepared for Jerk's second assault. Don would have been happy to skirt the charge and grab the dark lion by the thick of his mane with his chompers, but he miscalculated the others speed and wound up being struck by the full brunt of the blow- which had him collapse and fold on his side until he lost his balance and landed with a thud.

Obviously this wasn't going as expected. For all Don's discipline he found this particular Stormborn's style of fighting to be completely baffling to him. He was use to strength versus strength fighting! Blow for blow exchanges that had both opponents staggering from claws and ripping, bone-jarring jaws. Not this running about wildly and colliding bodies. That's really what caught Don so unawares, and the more rational part of him, the one that wasn't bewildered, thought of this a good learning experiance. Regardless, he wasn't helpless even while on his side, as his opponent was still in close proximity due to their bodies colliding; so, Don did what he always did in this sort of situation. His torso shot forward with help of his muscular inside leg to push it into the necessary momentum, and a thick set of jaws aimed itself straight for Dimwit. ... He should probably learn the other male's name after this.

Sometimes the gods favored fools, it was said. Not among the Stormborn, who felt that fools served little purpose except as the butt of cruel entertainments, but Galning's old pride had believed something to that effect. Maybe that was where Galning's luck came from. Because there was no way his "style" of fighting ought to have worked at all.

"Oof!" he exclaimed, more winded by the impact than he expected. His opponent didn't look as bulky as some of the reavers in the pride, but he certainly was solid. Good thing the impact hadn't been with his head.

Galning would have claimed it was all him, baby. If anyone had asked. Which no one did. But in his head he was explaining to an adoring crowd of freeborn ladies how he'd won this fight. Maybe he had hit his head just a little after all.

Don's powerful, full-on attack snapped Galning out of his poorly-timed daydreaming and back to the immediate situation. No boasting until the fight was actually won. Those were the rules. Unless you were taunting. But Galning couldn't come up with any decent taunts that didn't have to do with hamsters or elderberries. Whatever those were.

Galning ducked, hoping that perhaps Don might sail straight over him with such a mighty leap. and then he changed his mind and suddenly jerked upright, shoulders first, in a way that might prove painful to anyone above him.

Don had hoped he could latch his jaws around the other's neck, just once, he wanted to catch the faster male and shake him with all his might. Of course, with the way the fight had been going so far, Don wasn't exactly surprised when his jaws snapped around air, what came as a shock was the impact he felt from below. Already mostly airborne from the leap, the tawny male lost his balance as Galning's shoulder collided into him. There was nothing Don could have done to avoid that at the time, and could feel the wind escaping his lungs all too quickly. Dimwit had more strength, and battle prowess, than he had previously expected.

Not one to be deterred so easily, Don managed to get his paws under him again, figuring it best to keep up the straightforward attack regime. There was no way he was going to let this one get a running start again! Summoning all his might, the pale golden lion rushed forward, claws outstretched as he meant to tackle Galning to the ground and hopefully gain the upper paw. He wasn't certain how much longer he would be able to keep this up despite it being a spar, but the many and various collisions were taking a toll on his muscles which ached from the previous attacks. Nonetheless, he still had enough fight in him to continue his power assaults- for the time being.

Galning was pretty sure the sudden impact had caused him to bite his tongue. At least, his tongue hurt and his mouth was beginning to fill with blood, so that seemed like a logical assumption to make. He spat and then grinned with blood-reddened teeth.

"Just give up," he advised Don. "You are never going to beat me. I am..."

He paused to think of something suitably badass to say and in that time found himself tackled to the ground beneath Don. Well. That certainly wasn't ideal. Galning had always been rubbish at dealing with being tackled once he was down, especially if he was on his back when he hit.

"Oof!"

Lacking any sort of better plan, Galning began to snap and scratch at Don indiscriminately. One of his eyes narrowed into a squint and the other began to bug out, as sometimes happened when he was fighting. Things were about to get real.

That shut him up at least! He had not wanted Galning to finish that sentence, and was feeling quite pleased that he managed to tackle him before he could. He could have laughed, if he wasn't trying to avoid being bitten and scratched while attempting to keep the other fighter pinned through force alone. And then he saw that face. That... horrible, bug-eyed face that caused him to stop mid-strike and blurt out, "Dude, what the hell is wrong with your face?!" He didn't hit the ground that hard did he? s**t, the last thing Don wanted to do was make a trip to a healer's den after this.
PostPosted: Thu Apr 19, 2012 4:18 am

If someone were to conduct a role call of Galning's faculties at that moment, it would have gone something like this:

Language skills? ...

Logic skills? ...

Fighting skills?

Crazy? Muahahahaha!

That was actually the noise Galning made as he burst into maniacal laughter, completely unable to form words of any meaningful variety. His blood was pounding too loudly in his ears for him to hear what Don had said to him, but if he had heard, he probably would have laughed anyway. That face was all the warning people got before he went berserk.

It had been foolish of Don to stop mid-strike, because now he had Galning cackling at him and thrashing wildly beneath him, aiming his attacks at any available bit of flesh, but especially Don's legs and paws, since those were the most easily reached. He was still working to regain his feet, too, but he was far less deterred by the weight pressing him to the ground now.

What the s**t was going on?! Holy flying stones this guy must have really hit his head or something. Or... and Don paused to consider this, he was just plain nuts. You know... he did tackle him earlier without warning, and this laughter wasn't exactly helping Dimwit's case. Don had already begun to lose some steam, having been knocked to the ground a few times before, and being thrown off balance by Galining's strange fighting style along with his apparent lack of sanity left the male with one thought. Get the hell out of there! It might be contagious! He didn't know where that thought came from, but whatever had Galining practically foaming at the mouth he was certain he didn't want it!

Unfortunately for Don, it was this kind of distraction that caused him to take several blows to his legs, and before he could jump away to prevent further injury one of his paws managed to get crushed by the thrashing reaver. The large tawny lion stumbled away the best he could, stings and pains shooting up his limbs like angry bees. His eyes narrowed as he took a more defense position, but made no more moves against the crazy lion. He'd had his fill of shocking surprises for the day, and was willing to call it quits. Of course, he wasn't entirely sure Crazy over there would recognize this as defeat, and so Don kept a vigilant eye on his opponent, just in case.
