User ImageShe'd heard around the pride that there had been talks regarding a possible betrothal. She'd heard that it involved her papa, and that it also involved Thorgrim. It made Ulrika a little apprehensive. Thorgrim frightened her; there was a cold, calculating look in his eye more often than not, and it wasn't something that she was particularly fond of. As such, Ulrika found herself keeping a safe distance from Thorgrim's whole family. Even Halvar, which was disappointing, because she rather liked the handsome lion. He gave her puppy-dog eyes, and it empowered her. Honestly, who didn't like being looked at like you were the most beautiful creation the Gods had ever crafted?

It was scary, really. What if the talks were about her? And ... Gods forbid, Gaved? That lion terrified her, even more than his father did. She knew that he beat his Thrall - she'd seen poor Stygg looking roughed up on more than one occasion. Maybe it was Morath. Yes, her papa would not marry his most beloved daughter off to a tyrant.

Ulrika allowed her thoughts to consume her as she dozed in a warm ray of sun.

User ImageAfter talking to Lena about Ulrika, Halvar felt much better. He was sure Thorgrim thought he should just stomp up to her and announce that they would be wed, but Thorgrim was stern and imposing and vaguely dashing in an old-guy kind of way while Halvar (although young and strong) was too good-natured to intimidate a Freeborn girl. Halvar couldn't imagine pulling that off.

It occurred to him that he hadn't seen Ulrika around lately, but after a good deal of searching Halvar spotted a familiar ivory-and-brown pelt. She looked relaxed, lovely, and unaware of his presence. Halvar has half-tempted to slink off and try again another day, but he steeled himself and walked up to her, putting as much confidence into his stride as he could manage.

"Hallo, Ulrika," Halvar said, drawing up to the pretty lioness in her sunbath. He held his head high, attempting to look cool and confident despite the vultures flapping around in his stomach.

First one green eye creaked open, soon followed by a pale yellow one. Ulrika froze for a brief moment when she realized just who had called out to her. Of course it was Halvar. Why wouldn't it be? It was just her luck that he'd approach while she was oh-so-flatteringly flopped out in the dust. Just.. just her luck.

In the blink of an eye the white-maned lioness was up in a more lady-like, seated position. Tail curled around white-tipped paws, dual-toned eyes watching the handsome brown lion warily.

"Halvar. You should not sneak up on a lady." She sounded slightly miffed, though a slight smile flirted with her muzzle.

Already he was caught off guard. She was smiling -- maybe? -- but Halvar didn't know what to say.

I was thinking, you know, maybe, it would be a good idea, since you know, my family and your family, we're all, you know, well since I'm a lion and you're a lioness, obviously, I was thinking maybeweshouldgetmarried.

The embarrassingly stupid words unreeled in his mind as soon as he opened his mouth and he snapped his jaws shut before he could utter them. What came out instead was "I was thrnkkg."

Halvar cleared his throat, trying to summon up that confidence again. "I was walking, and I saw you ... I didn't want to disturb you, but I had to say hello. I couldn't just walk away from such a beautiful lioness."

Smooth. Thorgrim probably wouldn't approve, but Lena might.

Ulrika have a slight shake, dislodging bits of plant matter and errant dust from her coat. When Halvar choked - or rather, when he seemed to choke - Ulrika gave a slight tilt of her head and perked her ears. Was he okay? She tilted her head further and eyed him curiously.

Suddenly he was all flattery, and Ulrika's eartips tinged pink. Bright pink.

"Halvar," Ulrika's voice broke. She cleared her throat and continued, "are you... are you flirting with me?"

Oh, she hoped he was. More than anything, she hoped Halvar was flirting with her. Such a match would make her father happy.

Such a match would make her happy. Her papa had spoken of it long ago when he'd returned with that stupid patchy Thrall.

Halvar felt his ears turning pink as well, but fortunately his ears were covered in dark fur. He hoped Ulrika couldn't tell.

He remembered Lena's advice to be confident.

"Yes," Halvar said. He smiled at Ulrika. It was more of a shy smile than a bold, dazzling grin, but it was the best he could do.

"I don't know if you know it, but I've admired you for the longest time." Now that he was actually talking to Ulrika, he thought for sure she would say yes. He had the devil of a time figuring out what mysterious feminine creatures were feeling, but he almost thought that Ulrika was as pleased and nervous as he was himself.

Ooh. Her heart thud in her chest, bouncing all over the place. He'd admired her for the longest time? He was a handsome lion, he surely was, and from one of the families who had been in the pride since... well, since forever. This would definitely be an ideal match.

Oh, that shy little smile.

"H-have you?"

Her ears felt like they were on fire. Her stomach was all a-flutter. Was he getting at something? Even if he wasn't, she would demand that her papa set up a marriage for her. Okay, okay. Calm down. Calm down. Encourage him.

Right.

"I've... admired you too, Halvar."

Was that HER voice? All husky and... and wanton? Oh, she hoped so.

"You're so handsome. And strong."

And he came from good lines, which was important.

Halvar had never heard Ulrika's voice sounding so positively sexy. He wanted to shush her in case the weeds at their feed spontaneously burst into flame.

Some errant spark of common sense, baffled at finding itself in Halvar's head, prevented him from voicing this thought before escaping its prison.

"You flatter me," Halvar said, dipping his head to acknowledge her compliments (and give himself a chance to look away from those gorgeous eyes before he lost track of what he was trying to say). "If you do admire me, Ulrika, I had a thought." He cleared his throat, fighting down the urge to wiggle anxiously like a cub. "Would you marry me, Ulrika?"

Ulrika almost collapsed in a heap of relief. Halvar was so handsome, so bold and of good blood, an old family. And he wasn't Gaved, which was the most appealing thing about him. She pitied the lioness that got stuck with him, that was for certain. Halvar was certainly not Gaved.

Bouncing happily on her paws, Ulrika nodded, a huge smile breaking across her maw. "Of course I will be your wife, Halvar!"

That being said - and in a most unladylike fashion - Ulrika darted forward and nuzzled his ear and cheek, all while purring with giddy delight.

She was so glad that she would not be marrying Gaved.

Halvar beamed. He couldn't get any words out through his grin when Ulrika agreed and nuzzled his cheek. She was so sweet and so bold, such a perfect Freeborn lady!

It was lucky Halvar wasn't a mind-reader, because if he had known Ulrika thought about marrying Gaved for just one second the mental picture would have made him faint dead away.

"That's wonderful!" Halvar finally choked out. He couldn't think of any words strong enough, not without lapsing into awkwardly poetic territory. Cautiously, he nuzzled her cheek back. He could do that, right? He hoped so, because he couldn't resist.

Oh, Ulrika!

"It is wonderful, and you are wonderful, and life is just so wonderful as well." Ulrika couldn't help the way she fawned and beamed at Halvar. She shoved Gaved out of the recesses of her mind and simply forgot about him - it was safe to do so, now that she knew she'd be wed to Halvar.

He was such a sweet, earnest line, and Ulrika knew she could be happy with him. No, she would be happy with him. He would make a fantastic husband, and for a Freeborn lady, there was nothing more that she could want.

Ulrika purred softly when he nuzzled her cheek.

"Will your den be big enough for us, or should we find something larger?"
