History No one in the Ile'elimu has been able to precisely trace the pride's origins, thought it is widely accepted that they have been around for a very long time. The tunnels the pride resides in go deep down in the earth, their sides worn smooth with generations time.
Long ago they were subject to a number of ruling prides who used their knowledge to further their own expansion, it is only within living memory that the pride became self governing. Because of this they are often hesitant to get involved in external affairs. In an attempt to ward off empirical rule they vowed that no one lion or family will ever control the pride's actions. The pride only expands when population demands they find more resources, otherwise they tend to keep to themselves.
For years the pride has existed as a solitary entity, its members essentially cloistered within the territory as a method of defense. The previous council was intent on continuing this way despite an increasingly narrow gene pool and a growing thirst for the knowledge of the outside world. Three years ago a plague struck the pride, stemming from a contaminated dissection, and spread throughout the tunnels. The researchers and council were devastated, with few members surviving. After the plague had run its course came a period of infighting, various groups blaming each other for the disaster. Eventually it settled and the pride has begun to rebuild, though lingering hostilities occasionally surface.
Margulis was one of the few council members who survived the plague, though she was damaged by it. The fever left her with distorted vision and a steady tremor in her front paws, so she has been unable to return to research. Instead she has devoted herself to politics, and feels that to return to former glory and advance in their research the pride must open itself up to the outside world. She hopes to form alliances and encourages rogue joining. There are those who support her, but there are equally those who believe she will be the ruin of the pride.
Only time will tell.

The Method Religion While it is up to an individual what they believe, the tenants of the Ile'elimua do not support the worship of gods. They believe that while the presence of gods in the world is an interesting phenomena which warrants scientific exploration it is errant to pray or worship any in particular. Some may take a holistic approach and have a general awe of a universal force, but it will rarely be anything defined. Rogues which join with religious beliefs will not be persecuted, but they may be asked questions.
Laws Cubnapping from other prides or from the nannies is strictly prohibited and will be punished severely if the cubs are not returned unharmed. Willful murder with no scientific purpose is considered a grave offense and will not be tolerated. The line gets fuzzier when there is an experiment taking place, and each member is left to judge for themselves what is an is not acceptable.
Evil This gets complicated. The Ile'elimua do not really believe in the concept of someone being strictly evil. Experiments of all kinds are considered for their scientific merit and some of those experiments cross into the territory that others would consider evil or cruel. As long as their is some useful result to come of an action they do not tend to condemn that action. In rare cases lions may be brought before the council to explain their actions.
Outsiders This varies among pride members. Some are very open to the presence of rogues and newcomers and will welcome them, others may range from standoffish to aggressive. Rogues should exercise caution when approaching the pride. If a rogue can successfully avoid the traps unaided or shows a particular talent in a discipline they will gain some respect.
Coloration There is no restriction on coat color in the pride, although lions with very unusually bright or defined markings (skulls, pawprints, plants, etc) may be looked upon curiously and requested for selective breeding.
Breeding As far as the Ile'elimua are concerned, individuals may have whatever sort of lifestyle they desire. Flings, mates, polygamy, and rogue breeding are all equally acceptable. Pairs are not necessarily romantically involved, and parents are not required to be involved in their children's lives if they do not wish to.

Ranks Ualimu (3) :: The leaders of the pride, this is a council of older lions and lionesses who have spent their lives dedicated to the scientific pursuits, although there is typically one young member to speak for the needs of their generation. They represent a variety of disciplines and approaches to life. This is an elective position and all members will have the same say in pridal affairs. OOC: This position is currently open and will be idea and RP based. Applications may request it but initial positions will be selective and limited.
Mmea’elimu (unlimited) :: These lions have dedicated themselves to the study of botany. They provide much of the plant resources the pride uses through their gardens and are best known for their wide range of knowledge in identification and cross breeding. Some may choose to produce medicines from their plants, while others may choose to work with the Sumu'elimu in producing poisons. They typically reside in the uppermost levels of the tunnels. OOC: Free to request
Uzima’elimu (unlimited) :: These lions have dedicated themselves to the study of the life sciences. They are typically interested in how living things function on a biological level. If needed they act as physical healers but more commonly they are involved in experimental processes including cross breeding, dissection, and occasionally vivisection. Due to the nature of their research these lions typically reside near the tops of the tunnels where they can readily access the pens and the outside world. OOC: Free to request
Ardhi’elimu (unlimited) :: These lions have dedicated themselves to the study of the earth. They are called upon to predict changes in the seasons and are often the first to know if a natural disaster is coming. The majority of their time is spent ranging from the pride but when they are at home they typically reside in the older low tunnels where the raw rock is exposed. OOC: Free to request
Mbongo’elimu (unlimited) :: These lions have dedicated themselves to the study of behavior. Their research can vary greatly from lion to prey subjects and may focus on any sort of psychological or behavioral information. Others may be cautious of them as some Mbongo have been known to use particularly cruel tactics in gathering information, however it is not uncommon for a Mbongo to be well respected if their research is positive. They typically reside in quiet offshoots of the lower tunnels. OOC: Free to request
Sumu’elimu (unlimited) :: These lions have dedicated themselves to the study of poisons. While some may choose to develop these agents for use in traps and espionage, others choose to develop antidotes and antivenoms. They may reside either alongside the Mmea'elimu and the Uzima'elimu, or in the deepest recesses of the tunnels alongside the Anga’elimu. OOC: Free to request
Anga’elimu (unlimited) :: These lions have dedicated themselves to the study of the universe. As much of their research requires the night sky many of these lions do not leave the tunnels in daylight. As a result over time they typically develop vision problems and can be considered strange by other members of the pride. They typically reside in the lowest and oldest sections of the tunnels. OOC: Free to request
Provider (unlimited) :: These are the hunters and gatherers of the pride. They may be young lions who have not chosen a discipline or those who simply do not want to engage in research. They bring food and other requested supplies to the tunnels. Some may choose to live in the tunnels alongside family members, but most reside on the outside in dens. OOC: Free to request
Trapper (unlimited) :: These are the guards of the pride. The Ile'elimu will not willingly engage in combat so instead they protect their lands with a variety of traps and blockades. These lions are adept at digging trenches, setting snares, and observing unseen. They are often the first to judge outsiders. They typically reside on the fringes of the pridelands. OOC: Free to request
Teacher (unlimited) :: These are lions who have typically retired from a discipline and now teach the young cubs of the pride. They will be the primary education for the pride's youth up until adolescence, and are expected to be knowledgeable in all of the sciences as well as the pride's history and current knowledge of the outside world. They typically reside just outside of the tunnels in dens. OOC: Free to request
Nanny (unlimited) :: These lions are the heart of the pride, they care for the cubs and juveniles whose parents are working in the tunnels. They are highly respected and may be young or old, male or female. It is not uncommon for a nanny treat all youth of the pride as their own. They typically reside just outside of the tunnels in dens. OOC: Free to request
Duujua (unlimited) :: These are the youth of the pride, cubs and juveniles who have not yet taken an interest in any discipline or profession.
Somo (unlimited) :: These are the lowest of the pride's members, and are not allowed to roam free unsupervised. They are often used as test subjects for various forms of research and there is no stigma against harming them. Somo may be criminals, purchased slaves, or trapped enemies. It is uncommon to be promoted from this rank unless a strong talent is shown. Children of lion Somo will be removed from them and raised by the nannies. OOC: Free to request, this is also the only position available to nonlions
