These sands were...odd for such a lion as himself to be wandering in. His paws were used to swamps and snow, not grains of sand wedging themselves in between in toes. It was annoying, border-lining infuriating to think that he would need to get it out at some point in time, but now was not that time. No, Sokoni sought a new home, a new purpose. On his way to these dunes he had been informed by a passing red lion that if he wished to join these 'Firekin' he would need to duel his way in. With a roar he should be able to summon a member to fight him and for this 'butcher' to prove his worth to these warriors in the desert.

The massive lion stepped back, bracing himself on the sand as best his unsteady paws could. Air filled his lungs and his maw opened to released a roar loud enough that hopefully someone from this pride would hear over the wind.

The day had started out much like any other for him. Chores and checking up on the health of those in the pride who required his aid had taken up much of his morning, followed by a bit of training on his own part. He would be no good to anyone if he did not keep his strength up. With those completed he now made his way towards the edge of the lands, mentally going over a few verious routes he had been testing in search of herbs. They had thus far not amounted to much, but anything was better than nothing.

A roar cut through the air, pulling Tulen away from his thoughts. Annoyance at having his thoughts interrupted was quickly replaced by the realization that this must surely be a rogue seeking to join them. He had yet to be lucky enough to duel a rogue wishing to join, and eagerness quickened his pace. A black and white male was what awaited him. The medic looked the male over as he approached. "Looking to join?" He spoke, managing to hide the excitement of a fight from his voice. "If you wish to join our ranks then you will have to beat me." He shifted his stance, readying himself for whatever move the rogue may take.

So this...this was the Firekin he would duel for his right to join. It seemed easy enough, actually but as Sokoni knew all too well: looks could be deceiving.

"But of course. I wouldn't be here if I wasn't." The black male purred as his claws poked out from the inside of his toes as he flexed his paws, feeling the unfamiliar sand underneath them. Just as quickly as his claws had come out, they vanished once again. This was a clawless fight, a duel to prove his strength. There was another time and another place to go all out. This was not the place nor the time.

While this marked lion had an advantage of knowing the terrain, he would see just how well these Firekin could really fight. Taking his position, Sokoni's body tensed, his fur bristling as the muscle underneath twitched with excitement. It had been all too long since he last felt like this. It seemed the other was ready now, or at least as ready as he would give him a chance to get before he lurched forward, Sokoni's large legs underneath bringing him forward as he made way to crash into the other male. He had never been good at fighting from a distance, he preferred to be right up and personal with those he fought.

Tulen simply smiled at the male's response. At least his first duel against a rogue had him against someone confident, though that was certainly no indication of strength or skill in a fight. The medic watched the male closely, eyes narrowing as he studied his opponent. He'd soon find out just how tough this male was. The darker male readied himself, and did not wait long after to rush forward. Tulen was surprised by his speed, and perhaps that surprise had caused hesitation. Whatever the reasoning the older male hit him hard, with Tulen getting only a short time to at least turn enough to keep his head out of the way.

The force of the attack had nearly knocked the wind straight out of him. Somehow he had managed to keep himself on his feet though, and even as he gasped for air he swung a paw out at the male. If nothing else he would try to gain a little space between the male and he to allow him to catch his breath.

Of course Sokoni could not help but beam with pride as his first attempt on this lion had resulted in a successful hit. Perhaps these Firekin were not what all the stories had told him they were. Especially after his opponent backed away, trying to catch his breath and put distance between the two of them, but no; Sokoni would not have that. Again. Again he went after the male. Up onto his back legs he went, paw out, keen to push the male into submission and chest puffed as his mane shook. The distance Tulen had put between them had saved him from another hit as Sokoni's weight pulled him to the ground prematurely, resulting in his paws swiping at the marked lion but not even getting close enough to hit him.

The rogue's attack fell short, missing Tulen completely. With breath still short he surged forward. There was no more time to wait, he would beat this lion! That first hit had bruised his ego, and he was determined not to lose to some rogue!

Perhaps his small rest had not been enough, for a sharp pain in his chest caused the male to falter. Jaws snapped closed as he staggered to one side, quickly turning to keep himself facing the other male.

A grin began to appear. This fight, however docile it might be, reminded him greatly of the true fights of survival he had enduring during his time in the rogue lands, during his time with his sire. The grin went sour just at the thought of the foul male, slowly it morphed into a snarl as he once again attempted an attack on the male, but his anger blinded him as his paw fell short of hitting his opponent on the side of his face, only having the tips of his front paw even glance the mouth of the black lion.

His failed attempt at a hit caused Sokoni to falter, stumble to the side as he regained his footing on this unfamiliar sand.

Claw tips grazed the male's maw. Tulen pulled back, snarling a reply, before pushing forward to counter. His own attack swung lower, aimed at the black and white male's front legs, however between his staggered breath and the male's unsteady movements it failed to connect.

This entire duel seemed to be a joke. Not only could this younger lion not fight worth a damn, but it was just the two of them dancing around one another without touching it seemed. Of course Sokoni would have been the last lion to call this duel a dance. In fact, he was beginning to think that he was getting rusty as he had only managed to connect one of his attacks...well, once. Gritting his teeth, he pushed forward once again with every attempt to pin his opponent under his weight and be done with this. The sand was just beginning to irritate his paws and the sun was getting way too hot for this swamp-dwelling lion. It would take time adjust to this climate, but he could do that in the shade.

Tulen braced himself as the male rushed forward. The pair collided and Tulen was sent crashing to the ground. The other male's weight pressed down on on him, sinking him slightly as the sands shifted away from their combined weight. He squirmed a bit, trying to inch his way just far enough out to make his move. With a snarl his head flung forward, snapping at the male's neck. He readjusted his attack at the last moment. This was just a duel, after all, and it would not do well for it to end with a dead rogue on his paws.

The counter-attack sent Sokoni reeling backwards, hopping as he did so, one of those said hops nearly landing on his opponent's belly. Finally this lion had fought back with what he had thought befit a Firekin based on the rumors he had heard. Perhaps he was younger then even Sokoni had thought and that there were others who fought with more zeal then he was currently seeing.

Tulen rolled out of the way, quickly pulling himself up onto his feet. He shook sand from his mane and snorted. It seemed he had indeed lost. As much as he hated to admit it it seemed he needed more practice, or he had underestimated this rogue.

"I think we are done here." He spoke, eyeing the rogue curiously. The pain in his chest started to subside, his his ego would take a bit longer to heal. The firekin male turned and walked away, pausing for but a moment to snarl back. "I suppose I should welcome you to the firekin then." With that he walked off, not eager to stick around any longer.
