Hopefolly - Meshindi A good a day as any to die.
He said it every morning. Words that on their own were morbid Meshindi laced with ambition and transformed into something inspirational. The intrepid rogue he'd grown as would soon be a rogue no longer, and instead take his place as what he'd been born: his father's son, a viking; a lion of worth. Too many days separated him from his homeland and his memory of what exactly it looked like suffered in the wake of it.
"I think we're close," Meshindi said adamantly. "Don't give me that look. I know you are."
And why wouldn't he be? Gepeto had been assured they were "close" for several days. Meshindi's optimism was dauntless, and to his greatest and only companion, undoubtedly annoying.
Propelled faster by the familiarity of the scenery, Meshindi kept a few paces ahead.
"We're close," he insisted. "We are." He sounded much like the cub he'd been when he'd last seen this place. "I'm sure of it this time."

Gepeto - Shia bean Gepeto spent most of the journey in perturbed and disgruntled silence. He wanted to believe that, just as Meshindi had said, if s**t hit the fan they would gladly abandon this hunt for redemption. He wanted to trust his gut in knowing that there would never be any love found for any pride--not even his best friends; that the life of a lone lion was by far better then any other in comparison. But a large part of Gepeto doubted himself. He was worried that, just as Meshindi had said, he would end up really liking things. Truly liking them. And that uncertainty both worried and infuriated the large male. " Mm." A look had surely been given to the black lion. One of great indignation. "I think we've passed that tree ten times now. You're lost." And in turn, Meshindi had gotten Gepeto lost. He said this even as the other took to a quicker stride, maybe even because Meshindi seemed to become more overtly excited. "I'll believe it when I see it." He muttered begrudgingly, shifting his weight onto each paw faster in order to keep up.

Quote: Gepeto couldn't catch the break in his poker face as long as Meshindi kept his pace ahead of him. He was free to twitch his nose as much as he wanted. Voice steady, stride steady. That's all he needed.
"You'll see it soon, I swear by it." He didn't sway the likes of the females with some tough guy persona who none the less kept every promise he made, but Meshindi was good for his word. If only he had something to swear on to spice up his oaths. There was nothing and no one except Gepeto, but err, yeah... no.
Hopefully, one day he'd find a wife and then he could swear on her life to get his point across. Maybe he'd marry just for the sake of doing that. Maybe he'd go so far as to marry the lioness heading their way --
Wait. Quote: Zilly had no choice but to endure a bout of loneliness when her bird took off one morning and didn't come back the next, the one after that, or the one after that. Ohahira wasn't a very good substitute for company like she'd hoped. Too busy with the thrall work. Zilly never noticed there was so much of it!
Then came a vision of a lion brown and black and more brown all over, with eyes just like hers. He was big and he was temperamental. Every time she saw him, he was complaining, or looking like he wanted to.
The side-effects of her visions were so violent that Zilly did not often try to prompt them anymore. She had no reason to improve her abilities if her mother should not take her back.
Until now.
Zilly considered Him her friend. Possibly her best friend when Dira was not around to play that role. It's just he didn't know it yet. But he would. She would find him one day and tell him so.
Zilly had not expected him to find her first.
She was lurking around the borders when she spotted the pair in the distance. Joyfully, she ran toward them. The obvious thing to assume was she somehow recognized Meshindi, but she ran right past him and to Gepeto.
"It's you! It's you!"

Gepeto - Shia bean They had long since crossed over the boarder onto claimed territory. The change in terrain and the varying smells all around them bold welcomes and warnings to those who belonged and those who did not. Strangers with no names or faces left their marks close to one another, strong odors that did nothing more than remind him of what he had once left behind. Out one door and into another... And yet, even Gepeto found himself repeating it. He would hate himself later for it, certainly, but for now the lion was unable to control the adrenaline rush and nervousness and excitement… We are close. And he was prepared. The brown lion fully expected his companion to take the reins on this. He was the one who had a promised position within the pride; He was the one to drag Gepeto all the way up a hill and through some trees for deliverances sake. All Gepeto was responsible for was seeing to it that he gave this place a chance. One. Possibly. So long as it fit their needs. Gepeto had no intention of helping Meshindi in outside of that. None. But sometimes life threw curve-balls when you expected an easy home-run. Nothing was that simple, especially not when it came to them. "It's you! It's you!" He had seen her in the distance. He had given Meshindi, the stranger, and himself a spacious gap for which they could talk; figure things out. The scene played out in his head one way: Meshindi would address her and expect whatever kind of 'welcome back to the pride' initiation while Gepeto would…wait. Watch silently from a comfortable distance, tense and completely aware of his surrounding area. He would be ready for a fight if it was brought to them. But he wasn’t expecting her to bypass the dark male ahead of him. Gepeto was not expecting her to stand before him, eyes alight with recognition that he could not reciprocate. That he could not quite understand. When she finally fell silent, Gepeto raised a single brow before shooting Meshindi a very expectant (if not irritated) look. This was not his problem to be dealing with. Take care of this, please?

Quote: Gepeto had to see things from his friend's perspective: What would he think if someone suddenly ran up to Meshindi and rejoiced his mere presence? He was no conspiracy theorist, but what wasn't suspicious about this?
Suddenly, his mind was abuzz with potential answers. Had Gepeto been a viking all this time? Was it some supernatural force that drew them together, something in their shared blood?
"You know her?" Meshindi asked. And with that, he set himself up to get shot down. Quote: "Not yet," Zilly replied. Everything she said sounded off with the utmost enthusiasm. She smiled and spared but a glance at Meshindi, confirming he was the companion she had seen in some of the visions; nothing more. Not to say she showed any animosity toward him, she just... didn't care he was there, apparently.
"My name is Uss D'mzil," she informed Gepeto, clearly proud of it. "You can call me Zilly. I'm glad you're finally here! I was worried you'd starve out there since you're so awful at hunting, but you made it!" Quote: Meshindi turned his head away to try and conceal the laugh he was holding back. He'd tried to shield Gepeto from his own shortcomings in the past, but hearing this crazed female blurt them out -- how did one not laugh at their 'brother's' expense?

Gepeto - Shia bean Before he had a chance to, Zilly said it. That should have been all she needed to say for Meshindi to take over. To do what he had come here to do. Gepeto didn't know her. Help a brother out. But he didn't speak up. And the more Zilly rambled off the more confusing everything became. The angrier Gepeto felt. Was this an inside joke shared between Vikings? Was it Meshindi's intention to ridicule Gepeto in front of the whole pride? Was this really the first sign of what things would come? 'I was worried you'd starve out there since you're so awful at hunting...'.......If there were a cliff close by, he would have jumped off of it. It took all his strength not to lash out violently, golden eyes setting HEAVILY on Meshindi. Every bit of anger he had in him was sent telepathically to his companion. "I do not know you. I don't know what the hell you're talking about. Get out of my way." And with that the brown lion moved past Zilly. He kept his gaze on Meshindi until he too was behind him. Gepeto had no idea where he would go or what he would do when he got there, but he was done. If only for Meshindi, and just for this one time; he would walk away.

Quote: All fun and games until someone gets pouty. Meshindi was already too sympathetic to be heading for a pride like the Stormborn. Imagine what his father would say if he'd seen him pandering to Gepeto's moodiness?
"Oh, come on." Meshindi only dared to speak when he was side-by-side with his friend. "She's obviously crazy. Who cares what she says? She''ll probably get captured and then you can vent by making her count how many stars are in the sky."
The only reason Meshindi was so sure this 'Zilly' would be taken as a thrall was that she kept following them. Quote: Zilly had tried the obvious tactics to no avail. "Hey, wait!" didn't work. "HEY, WAIT!" didn't either. She needed something that would stop them in their tracks. Just one thing that would prove she did know him.
What was his name? Ugh, she was so bad with names!
Zilly stared at the sky. Just looking at her was enough to give someone a headache. There had only been one vision in which she'd heard it. What was it? What. Was. It.
No use. She couldn't remember. "Wait! Hold on!" She ran, and not only caught up with them, but went around them, blocking their path. "I'm a seer!"

Gepeto - Shia bean " Crazy..." The lion spat back, rolling his shoulder dismissively in mid-stride. That she was, but that was also not the point. While never one to admit it, Gepeto was embarrassed. More than he had anticipated he would be if ever something like this were to come up. On the surface the large, brown lion would deny her claim fiercely. He had taken down prey before...once. Unfortunately deep down inside Gepeto knew the truth. He had always known. That didn't mean he had to like it. A rare sign of interest sent his tail whipping to the side. Zilly, a seer. A huria of the Firekin lands, with his basic knowledge of these sort of occurrences, would have laughed in her face if he didn't have some doubts. Still, it wasn't enough to slow him down. Instead, he looked over a shoulder and made a Tch noise. "You'll get yourself into trouble spitting off lies like that."

Zilly had not felt so flustered in a long time. "It's not a lie! I am!"
She was a what? It was coincidence at work a lion as religious as Meshindi had gone his entire life without hearing about seers. None of his vagabond tribe that substituted as a family had reason to mention them; some didn't know about them either. It had never come up with Gepeto. Not much did.
Meshindi stared at his friend and asked "What's a seer?" He startled when, before Gepeto could answer, the lioness was again in front of them. She was quick for one her size, he'd give her that.
"I can prove it!" Wham! Zilly bashed her forehead against the former Firekin's.
Meshindi quickly sprang into action, placing himself between the bound-to-be-dizzy Gepeto and this lioness with a death wish. "Are you crazy?!" Hadn't he answered his own question earlier?
Zilly frowned. Not because she regretted her actions, but because they had not prompted a vision!

Gepeto - Shia bean "Fuc--" Thick skulls. Lions had them. Gepeto had one. But it wasn't thick enough to keep out the dull ringing in his ears or the dizziness that followed Zilly's abrupt and unprovoked attack. Whatever words that had been on his tongue were now bitten down into by the clatter of his teeth. Blood filled his mouth and coated the white fangs that bared, the foul taste of metal burning his nose. Before he had bothered to open his eyes again, to see that he had stumbled several paces in the direction they had come, Gepeto released a pained roar that, not to be overlooked, was also filled with a seething rage that continued to build in ferocity the longer he suffered. His snout was wrinkled, his golden eyes watering... " b***h..." The lion hissed as he stepped forward. Zilly had tried his patience for much too long. Gepeto had succumbed to civility for much too long. There were no amount of words he could say that would express the message of a perfectly placed bite. Or a heavy swing of his large, taloned paws. Stepping into their Meshindi-barrier without having noticed he was even there, the male expelled a very heavy breath before muttering. " Move." It was clear what Gepeto had in mind for their following 'seer'.

The insult had as much influence on Zilly as water on the feathers of a duck. She paced in a small circle, similar to how a cub would just before they laid down to sleep for the night. Except she did not cease this movement, just went around and around and around.
"Gepeto," Meshindi said sharply. Far be it by him to tell you the point of stopping his friend. She'd hit him first; by all means, Gepeto was justified in killing her -- and Meshindi, who did not know there was more to this lioness than her actions so far suggested, assumed she would be in the belly of the vultures tonight.
Zilly gleefully bounced on her back paws, the others flailing in the air like a rearing zebra. "Gepeto! That's it!"
She and Meshindi were both facing the wrong direction to see what was coming for them. Kondo, fierce Captain; savage, churlish brute, was as much a what as a who. As much a force to be reckoned with as a lion.
And as familiar as if someone had taken paint to Meshindi and recolored some of him.
Kondo hated seers. Hated them. There was a special place in his heart for Uss D'mzil, the stupid b***h. His eyesight was not what it used to be, but he recognized those colors, that pattern, and that girth.
Gepeto's roar had enticed his curiosity and here he was.
If these strangers were merry-making with that so-called Reaver then the pride was about to have some new thralls.
Kondo roared louder and deeper, and somehow, with more malice. Gepeto's anger was mighty, but he had a long way to go before he woke up as much a menace as his future Captain.

" Shut it!" Gepeto warned through clenched jaws. It was expected of him, a natural reaction, Meshindi had seen it coming....And it was one that would without a doubt prompt more to follow. His breath was hot and jagged, his face twisted into an ugly snarl. Black hairs atop his head shook wildly as the male threw a shoulder forward, aiming for Meshindi's side before attempting to step around his companion. Gepeto's momentum was building, his heart was racing, and yet-- When a scent caught in his nose, he stalled suddenly. And then, as a roar echoed all around them, Gepeto straightened away from Meshindi's touch. Rage would not subside, not after the annoyance that Zilly had subjected them to. It would only strengthen as the gap closed between the new figure...and his brother. Instinctively, the movement he had been making before completed itself; and now Gepeto stood in front of Meshindi. Between the males. Where he might have lacked in the hunt, the brown male surely made up for it in the fight.... If Zilly had seen that in her visions, none of this would have happened. Surely. Readied for anything, Gepeto's attention did not falter. At first nothing registered familiar about him. He was a threat, and Gepeto did not make it a habit to check out coat patterns before starting a fight...but the longer he stared, the more interested he became. The more familiar the other male was. For a moment he tried to clear his head, to remember where he had seen them. Those markings. Where.... Gold shifted to Meshindi, then. A light bulb went off. His eyes widened slightely. Could it...

Meshindi did expect these things from his friend, all of them -- the outrage and the physical aggression. He was smaller and could be shoved out of the way if Gepeto really wanted. The best he could hope for was to keep getting in front of him until he calmed down.
Then, a roar. A scent.
Meshindi saw Zilly dart to the left, out of their path, before he surveyed the stranger -- who was anything but a stranger, in truth. He had prepared for this encounter a thousand different ways and all of it for null: His mind was numb; his paws frozen to the ground by some chill only he felt. Was this fear or joy taking his coherency hostage?
The Captain approached like he'd attack. He didn't. Not yet. "Went out and found an outlander bodyguard, did you?" he asked Meshindi. The time it took to reach them was all he needed to comprehend this. His son had returned, spawn of that insult he'd wed. The lion Kondo was when he spared him had already been on the path of no return. Since, he had only become more cruel. "And what name do you wail when this one mounts you?"

His entirety went rigid, hardened by uncertainty; by confusion. His friend, the one who kept a leveled head when he could not, looked as if he had just seen a ghost. It was an expression foriegn to Gepeto. It was... almost kind of funny. Almost. If it hadn't of crippled him. He had intentions of letting Meshindi fight his own battles amongst these 'vikings'. He intended on watching as the pride either let them in or ran them off...not all that concerned with whichever way the wind blew, so long as they were to survive it. For a moment, shifting in place between the two males, he had forgotten all about those intentions and replaced them with instinct. Meshindi protected Gepeto, and the same was true vice versa... But this was not his fight. He would protect Meshindi, but only when it was absolutely necessary. Gepeto swiveled back, fixing his gaze on the stranger once more. It became apparent that nothing outside of fur was reminiscent of the male at his back. Words he had not expected, a strength that did not need demonstrating to be felt, conflicted with his view of Meshindi. This…despite their physical similarities…could not be... The bold, brown lion who would have in any other situation launched himself forward in a blind rage held his ground and remained unusually quiet; aside from a snort of laughter. Meshindi lacked that sort of crude humor, as well. Relations between the two seemed impossible...surely...

Meshindi was the kind to utter a disappointed hello to his father and you didn't need to be a seer to predict. Besides, seers could be wrong. Sometimes, they saw only what was likely, not what was certain.
Meshindi put his words to better use. "We're here to join -- to fight our way in."
All Kondo had given him were insults and noises. A grunt lurched from his throat. He glanced between the two lions a few times. "Then I'll fight you both together and you can waste less of my time."
"I don't think you're allowed to do that," Zilly said, not missing a beat.
