One of the cities being rebuilt to inhabit survivors.
New Los Angeles has been fenced off from the rest of the destroyed city to hold off the infected. The city is now inhabited by survivors of all sorts with it's own make-shift government and rationing system.

The former-refuge-camp was now somewhat of a city. Or at least, people called it a city. They didn't technically have a government, but everything that was done was done for the good of the people. For now, at least. She'd been here quite a while now, since she'd come across it a year or so back. Now the "city" was responsible for keeping nearly one hundred alive. That was a big number post-apocalypse. It was a hard task, a very hard task, considering the virus effected more than just humans: animals too. Meat was the hardest to come by, thankfully though, humans didn't need meat to survive. They made do with what rations they could find scavenged about what was left of the city of Los Angeles. Canned and dried goods that didn't go bad mostly.

But some began to attempt to start farming even. Not the easiest thing to do, since not many were experienced farmers, but they managed to grow some crops that could sustain human life. Like back in the old medieval peasant days: they survived well on potatoes and such. It was the best they had.

Water was also hard to come by, as in California it only rained so often. But somehow they would manage through the year, losing people, yes,and that always happened, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been. And they tried their best to maintain the fences surrounding the little city to keep the infected out. They'd managed to put up two layers of fencing to keep out the zombies, because last time there was a breach all hell broke loose. This city wasn't impenetrable, surely, but it was something. And with it, an attempt to rebuild what was left of humanity.

Lauren was glad she had this place, instead of having to fend for herself out there alone. She'd been alone briefly, but that had nearly done her in. No good. She'd nearly lost herself in more ways than one out there. So it felt a little better knowing she was here now, and she could at least help welcome in those who were seeking help. The lookout had spotted some survivors heading over, and so it was her job to bring them in safely, and make sure none were bitten.

Her gun remained holstered on her hip, though she hardly used it anymore, and her knife on the other side. Her hand resting there as a precaution, something she'd grown to accustomed to, she hadn't realized she did it most of the time. Getting out of the city was inconvenient, going through the fences and the like, and after that was a litter of abandoned cars, a few old buildings, some trees and overgrown grass. There could be any stray zombies just hiding out waiting, they'd learned to do that lately, and it was unfortunate and scary. You couldn't always tell if one was dead. So she moved quietly. Often times, word gets spread of this little safe haven, so survivors search. Not all make it. And lately that's been happening a lot. A couple just the other day was swarmed by a small group of corpses when they tried to get to the city. So now she would attempt to safely find and escort the survivors back. She heard footsteps and drew her weapon, unsure if it was human or zombie.

Kaidan and Andrew met a few people in their travels, and each one told them of Los Angeles, that it was being rebuilt to help survivors. After some discussion, they came to the decision that it was their best chances. Slowly, they made their way. It was a long journey, from the middle of Arizona to California, but after a couple weeks, they finally arrived. They didn't approach at first, instead just studying what they could see of it from a distance. In the years they traveled together, they learned not to trust every rumor. For all they had known, the rumors were wrong and LA was overrun with zombies.

But what they saw was evidence otherwise. They could see people, non-infected people wandering through part of the city. It appeared to be fenced off, and Kaidan could see some zombies standing outside the gates, out of view from the gate, but visible where they stood.

After a couple more minutes, they moved forward, only to be stopped by a girl with a gun. Kaidan lifted his hands, and Andrew reached for the dagger strapped to his belt.
"We're not infected," Kaidan said. "We heard rumor that LA was being rebuilt and we came to see."

She came across two survivors. A man and a young boy. The man was smart enough to put up his hands in surrender, but the boy, he didn't seem too scared. That was different. But she supposed even young children would have to harden up with the times. She lowered her weapon and moved closer to the two, looking them over. He said they weren't infected, but he could have been lying. But they looked fine. Healthy otherwise the obvious sense of malnutrition and heat exposure and...well, dirt.

"Well the rumor was true. To an extent." She holstered her gun and spoke again. "It's not too far that way, but stay sharp, sometimes they like to hibernate near the fences." They weren't out of danger yet. Infected always had ways of jumping out at you, even when you thought you were safe.

Kaidan nodded at her words. "We could see them from where we were standing. There seemed to be a lot there just waiting," he said. Andrew kept his hand on the dagger, watching the woman warily. It wasn't until Kaidan put a hand on his shoulder that he relaxed and stepped back, letting go of the handle of the dagger and standing slightly behind Kaidan. "Lead the way," he said.

Andrew glanced up at Kaidan, then at the woman. He didn't trust her, but apparently Kaidan did. To a limit, Andrew was sure. He pulled the hood of his cloak up, hiding his face from view. As a kid, he spent all of his time inside. When he finally got outside, the sun rising had hurt his eyes. After Kaidan found him, he searched for a coat or hat, something to shade his eyes. The only thing they found that was still intact was the cloak. All the hats and jackets had already been scavenged by other survivors. Three years later and Andrew still wore it all the time, and almost always with the hood up.

He watched the adults silently, listening to what they had to say. He was not much of a talker. He never talked to the other survivors they came across, letting Kaidan do all the talking. He never spoke unless he was alone with Kaidan, not trusting anyone else enough to let them hear what he had to say.

Lauren began to lead the two towards the city. She looked at the kid and then the man. "He yours?" She asked. "We don't get many children around here. " Children were hard to come by in the apocalypse. Mostly teenagers at the youngest, because they could hold their own better. The younger they were, the more you'd marvel at how they survived for so long. There was a young couple back in the city that she knew of, that was pregnant, but that was the closest to new or young life that had been seen in a while.

"Name's Lauren, by the way. I guess i'm sort of like the welcoming committee." She admitted, smiling a little. If they had a nice face to greet travelers, people wouldn't suspect to be mugged or anything and lash out.

She glanced at the kid again, who seemed a bit introverted. He'd likely latched on to this man, and this man only. Trust was always something hard to come by these days, but she meant no harm.

Andrew silently glared at her under his hood, knowing she probable wouldn't be able to see it. Kaidan shook his head. "No, but he might as well be. We've been together for a few years. He's a good kid. Great company," he said, glancing back at Andrew. "I'm Kaidan. This is Andrew," he added. "It's nice to meet you." Nice to meet another survivor, not a zombie.

Andrew looked around them, taking in their surroundings and watching for any zombies. He spotted something strange through the overgrown brush and stopped walking, staring at it. After a couple seconds, he stepped forward, going through the bushes to figure out what it was. And then it moved and he immediately reached for his dagger, digging it in the neck of the canine as it leapt at him. The sound drew Kaidan's attention and the man turned, sliding his bow from his shoulder and an arrow, shooting the canine off of Andrew. There was a yelp from the dog and it fell dead. Kaidan immediately ran back to Andrew to make sure he was okay, helping him back to his feet and holding him close.
"It's okay, you're okay. Come on, we're almost there. Can you walk?" Andrew nodded, though he looked a little shaken. He was still clutching the dagger in his hand.

It all happened rather quickly. One moment they were in the midst of a conversation, the next: a dog was attacking the boy. She drew her gun and aimed at the corpse of the mutt as a precaution as she moved towards them. "Come on, we need to get back. We're almost there." The kid looked shaken, but he still clutched that dagger of his as if his life depended on it. Poor kid.

She lead the two to the city. Besides having to evade some shuffling zombies, the rest of the trip went rather smoothly. Now they could hear the sounds of the city as they got closer. She raised a hand and waved to the look out, who was standing atop a building with a sniper, and a pair of binoculars. He waved back, and turned to say something to someone on ground level by the gate.

She let the two in through the gates first before closing and locking them behind her. "You two are safe in here now, we've got ration meals, first aid, some clothing and supplies to spare, and shelter." She told them and then smiled a little reassuringly, "And no infection. We try to keep it as clean as we can."

Andrew followed Kaidan, holding onto the man's jacket with one hand and the dagger with the other. He held the dagger until they were through the gate and the gate closed, after which he slid it back into it's case, still keeping one hand on Kaidan's jacket.

Kaidan returned his bow to it's previous position, but kept a hand on the collapsed bo staff tied around his waist until they were inside.
"Thank you for the help Lauren. I don't suppose you have running water here, do you?"

Lauren cringed. "We've got some. Not much. We're entering the dryer months and water's harder to come by." She admitted. "But yes. Though we've been told to use it sparingly. For necessary bathing, cooking and drinking, and first aid." She explained, holstering her weapon and walking into the city. "Like i said, we've got a ration system, here." Water and food were rationed off to the survivors, and bathing water was used vary sparingly. Typically, unless they managed to tap into clean waterlines, showers didn't come easy. They were limited to 2 minute showers here, or you'd simply take a bucket and a rag. Another unfortunate thing Lauren hated was that there was only a few buildings with shower access. The main one was a small gym center, which had it's locker rooms and showers, but the water was limited.

She walked in with them further as they passed some buildings and other survivors. The actual amount of space they had here wasn't so big, because, well, it took a while to clear out these buildings of infected. So they only had so many housing buildings. But it was still something plenty of others welcomed. There were some tents set up outside, for those who prefered space and not wanting to be packed up into the buildings like sardines.

"As you can see, it ain't much. But it's as homey as you can get around here." She admitted.

Kaidan nodded. He could understand rationing things so that they lasted through the whole population. For years, it had just been him and Andrew, so there was more to go around, but they'd both have to cut down now. Well, Kaidan would cut down. He wanted Andrew to continue eating as full meals as possible. The kid was only eleven. He still had a lot of growing to do. Kaidan didn't mind cutting down how much he ate if it meant Andrew got enough. "It's okay, we won't shower if it'll save the water." Andrew pouted a bit under his hood, but still didn't say anything. Admittedly, he just wanted to sleep at the moment. As they walked past one of the buildings, Andrew tugged on Aidan's coat. When Kaidan looked down at him, Andrew pointed at the building. Aidan turned to Lauren. "Is there anyone in that one?" he asked her, gesturing at the building Andrew had just pointed out to him.

Lauren walked alongside them and followed Andrew's gaze to one of the buildings. She wracked through all the names she recognized who might be staying there. "Yes, but only a few. Myself and a few others included, but it's got space: a few rooms and some furniture. Enough to go around." She smiled down at the young boy. "I'm sure there's a bed somewhere in there for Andrew, " She told them.

She did technically live in that building, but as people came and went, she'd more or less just bunked wherever she felt the most comfortable. There was about four rooms, a couple actual beds, and some old furniture: a couple couches and a big old armchair Andrew could probably use. Most people here just took to making their own beds if ones weren't available.

Andrew didn't return her smile, but the idea of a bed sounded great to him. "What size beds?" Kaidan asked. Being the only one Andrew trusted, Kaidan did his best to stay as close to the boy as he could at all times. Whenever they found a bed, they usually shared it. They had both become light sleepers, and they always set up traps that would alert them when they were tripped, so they'd have time to prepare for a fight.

Lauren thought about it. "I could just show you." She waved her arm for them to follow as she lead the way inside the building. The front door of the building was almost always propped open, but had a curtain of sorts for privacy. She lifted the curtain up as she stepped inside. The walls were a dusty creme color and the carpet on the floors was in some areas ripped or tattered. But over all, it was in decent shape. There was a couch in the front room, a reclining arm chair, and some bags and blankets folded and packed up. There was a kitchen off to the side, though it was also being used for people to live in. There was a make shift bed and some supplies there too, separated by another curtain.

"I'm assuming you want the back room," There was a small hallway, two cupboards, a bathroom, and two bedrooms. Like the other rooms, there were doors on both bedrooms and the bathroom, but they were propped open and had a sheet hanging. The doors would be closed if there was an emergency, or if there was the odd chance of a couple wanting some privacy. The front door would be closed during the colder months though, to keep the house sealed as best as they could.

Lauren lead them into one of the empty bedrooms. There was someone here a few days ago, living here, but they'd left the city walls and was assumed dead by the lookout. Or, you know, not-so-dead. Now the room was up for grabs, and since Aidan had a child with him, he seemed perfectly eligible to take the space. Inside the room was a full sized bed, and a small dresser. There was a window, but the outside was barred off, fortunately for them, it was like that when they found this house. The room was small, but big enough. "This'll be yours. You got a bed over there, and that little dresser for belongings if you have any." She said. There was some blankets folded up on the bed already, she pointed to them,"That should take care of you, and if you need any other supplies, there's some guys down the block who hand out extra clothing and things."

Threw the journals of dead survivors found in the sewers of L.A, there was mention of a city inside the city on the surface with survivors with supplies with some sort of make shift community.Deep under the sewers sitting back on a office chair smoking a little meth and Looking threw the old journals of the dead for hours, billy decided it's best to look for the city, since hes been in isolation in the underground sewers for years ,he could get information about the rest of the world and maybe see if there are other settlements to trade drugs for supplies .After hours of preparation and planning he was ready to leave the hellish sewers and go back to his old life of drug dealing, but before leaving the small room he waves goodbye to the dead bodys stuck in a sewer pipe then leaves. Moving threw the dark tunnels with weak flashlight avoiding any zombies and pretending that it is prison , he finally manages to find a ladder, putting on a ski mask billy begins to slowly climb up the ladder slowly, he makes it to the top then beings to remove the heavy hatch with a wrench.

After the hatch was fully removed billy lifted his head up and looked around saw nothing but trash all over, Billy slowly threw pack onto the ground pull himself up onto the hard surface. Amazed by the quietness of ghost city and former chaos that was upon the world, Billy wondered if the rumors was real or old.
