Dalla was the unhappiest she'd been in a long, long time. Stygg and Gaved's litter of cubs were grown and gone, and Dalla had yet to conceive. She was feeling frustrated with herself, with Gaved, with Stygg - everyone. Whose fault was it? Was there something wrong with her? She didn't know. All she knew was that it was miserable living in the same den as her husband and his second wife. It truly was. There was no escape, really. And then Gaved's insufferable b***h mother, well, she didn't make things any easier. There were some days where she thought about leaving the den. Somehow annulling the marriage. She had little doubt that she'd be happier with someone else, a different family. It was aggravating, demeaning, and depressing. After a day of crafting, Dalla was home alone, enjoying the peace and quiet of an empty den. She meticulously put her supplies away, humming softly under her breath.

Gaved was enjoying the quiet of the den now that the cubs were grown and out of everyone's fur. He slunk back to the den in silence, wondering if he might be able to take a nap on the furs, but that nap wouldn't be alone. Dalla must have had the same idea. Hm. Gaved considered leaving -- Dalla could be dreadfully unpleasant -- but he didn't want her to think she could run him off. "Wife," Gaved said by way of greeting, approaching Dalla. He tended to be more affectionate with Stygg than with Dalla, perhaps because Dalla had such a sharp tongue on her, but she looked a bit depressed. Gaved decided to be nice. He leaned close to her to touch his nose to her cheek. "How was your crafting today?"

There were times that Gaved was completely and utterly intolerable, and there were times where she could almost see a glimmer of gentleness in him. She knew that she oftentimes provoked him, but it was something of a defense mechanism. She hadn't wanted to marry Gaved, but Dalla had done so obediently. Their relationship hadn't ever been smooth, but it was what it was. The moments where Gaved was gentle with his approach, where he tried to be a considerate husband, these were the moments that Dalla thought that she could come to have feelings for him. This would be a truce, then, and Dalla's words held no anger when she finally answered. "Husband," she returned the greeting, her voice soft. "Today was very productive." Dalla returned his touch with a light one of her own, a gentle flick of her tail against his. "How was your day, Reaver?"

Gaved was usually a little on edge around Dalla, waiting for her to lay into him. Of course, he had to admit that he usually deserved it. Gaved had said his share of insulting and provocative things to Dalla. Her obvious disdain for their marriage had always grated on him. He was a proud and accomplished Reaver. She had never been properly appreciative.
"Productive, good," Gaved said. "I'll bring you some things from our next raid to work with." Somehow it annoyed him to see Dalla always poking around for bits of feathers and things. It seemed beneath her.
"I was patrolling. Boring." Gaved yawned. "Haven't gotten into a good fight in ages." It had been too long since he got a good challenge. There was nothing as thrilling as the feel of your claws sinking into someone else's pelt, and the bite of their claws sinking into yours.
Gaved had run out of his stock of small talk. "You want to make some cubs? We haven't made any yet." He wasn't sure he wanted another heap of cubs around so soon, but it irked him that he hadn't managed any with Dalla yet.

The prospect of small talk delighted Dalla, and the barest hint of a smile flickered across her features. It was a nice change from the awkward, stilted conversation they managed, and it really should not have come as a surprise to Dalla that their little chat inevitably turned to something that she'd much rather have avoided speaking of.
And the way he brought it up, augh. Dalla's features tightened, the little smile that had graced her lips dimming until it disappeared completely.
"No."
Her voice broke slightly, and Dalla turned away from Gaved so that she could tend to her supplies once more. The urge to snap at him was strong, but she was feeling so very dismal.
"No, I don't."

Gaved thumped his tail irritably against the ground. This happened every time. Every time! He thought he was getting somewhere, making some kind of peace with the lioness that managed to irritate him more than any other. He didn't know how he managed to piss her off so badly, so often.
He waited to see if she was going to say something nasty, coming up with a dozen or so cutting retorts while he did so. But Dalla just kept picking at her things and looking depressed. And her voice had been weak. Sad.
"Well, I'm sorry," Gaved snapped. "I'm sorry I didn't give you cubs. I wanted to, you know. I tried. Maybe--" He scratched irritably at the furs on the ground, slicing them with his claws. Gaved didn't like revealing any vulnerabilities to Dalla, but he had already started. "Maybe there's something wrong with me." His voice had lost its angry edge and sounded just as miserable as Dalla's. He had failed her as a husband. It was no wonder she was so grouchy all the time.

Dalla hadn't been expecting that. She'd been expecting the abrupt snap, the anger and blame and rage and irritation and maybe even a thumping since she was a failure of a wife who couldn't even provide her husband with the offspring he deserved as opposed to the offspring of a thrall. She hadn't been expecting his voice to become void of anger, and Dalla certainly hadn't been expecting him to place the blame on himself.
It really made the situation much more bearable.
"Lets.. I don't want to make you feel bad, and I don't want to feel bad about it, either." She sounded muted, quiet, distant. "I don't want to fight anymore, and I don't want to place blame on either of us, Gaved. I know I don't make you happy, and we haven't had a litter yet. I hope one day we will."
She paused before awkwardly pressing her nose against his shoulder.
"Maybe the stress of everything," Dalla made a vague gesture with her paw, "is affecting things, husband."

"I didn't know you were trying to make me happy," Gaved said, a bit taken aback by Dalla's ... sweetness. He had always felt much more comfortable letting down his guard around Stygg than Dalla. Stygg, while sweet and strong in her own way, had always been... well, less than Dalla. Gaved had never known how to deal with a hardheaded, capable female with the attitude of a cornered honey badger.
Now that Dalla was playing nice, Gaved didn't know what to say to her.
"Why didn't I ever make you happy?" Gaved asked. "I'm strong. I'm a good Reaver. I don't hit females."
Well, he hadn't since marrying, anyways. Gaved had learned that while females tended to be weaker physically, they could also be stubborn and ferocious.

Dalla was quiet for a long, long time. Her pale eyes were focused entirely on her husband's face, and it was difficult not to crumple and weep. She'd never wanted to be this unhappy. She'd never wanted this sort of thing for herself after seeing what her sister had gone through. She'd wanted to make her own life choices, not to be the pawn of a meddling, old-blooded Captain like Thorgrim. How did she put all of that into words without causing a larger rift between herself and her husband? "I ... my sister had an arranged marriage. It was also arranged by your father. Such a thing was not what I wanted for myself, and so I found myself bitter from the start." She wasn't sure if she made sense, but she didn't want to point out that he hadn't been easy to get along with, either. This wasn't about pointing fingers or making him feel bad about himself. Perhaps things could be mended. "And Stygg," Dalla's voice was a choked whisper. "I did not know how to react to her. To what she's become to you. She has given you cubs, and I have not. Your mother does not make this easy for me, though I'm sure she wants nothing but the best for you."

"I didn't want an arranged marriage either," Gaved said. "I didn't want to be married at all."
It had still been intensely annoying when Dalla seemed to hate him at first sight. He had enough of an ego in those days to think a female should be falling all over herself to please him if he so much as looked in her direction. Of course, most of the females he had interacted with had been thralls, so that was generally the case.
Gaved's tail twitched from side to side as he thought over Dalla's words. He wasn't much of a deep thinker, but he was trying his best. Navigating female emotions was like swimming in the midnight ocean, but he could sense a light ahead.
"Do you want to leave, and marry someone else?"

Dalla felt a surge of anger, first and foremost, but she forced herself to tamp it down so that she could take it apart and analyze everything that was bothering her about the question he'd asked. When she deconstructed everything and really thought about her feelings, the realization was a little startling. No, she did not want to marry someone else. Dalla watched Gaved closely, her pale eyes watching every nuance of his body language. No, she did not want to marry someone else. She did not want to leave Gaved behind, and a little part of her did not want to leave Stygg behind, either. The lioness was a good mother, and kind-hearted, and helpful - and Dalla was also fond of the cubs she'd helped look after. Dalla shook her head and released a soft sigh. "No. I do not want to marry another. This is my home. You are my husband. It is as simple as that. I do not want to be miserable, and I do not want you to be miserable either. We must strive to be... gentle. With one another. Do you agree?"

It was irritating to watch Dalla thinking over his words, trying to decide if she wanted to leave, but Gaved managed to keep a neutral expression on his face. He had learned that snapping at Dalla just made her snappy in return, or mopey, which was worse because he didn't know how to deal with it. He felt tense, and it probably showed it in the way he stood stiffly watching Dalla.
He relaxed a bit when she answered. "Good," said Gaved. He hadn't wanted Dalla to begin with, but he had come to think that a Stormborn lion should have a strong, fierce wife. Stygg had her own kind of strength, and had borne strong sons, but he was sure Dalla's cubs would be a force to be reckoned with whenever they made an appearance. They would get his parents off his back as well. No one had exactly been thrilled that Gaved only managed to get a thrall pregnant.
"Gentle," Gaved said thoughtfully. He wasn't really sure how to be gentle. Dalla didn't want him to treat her like she was a soft thing, did she?
Wait. Maybe she did. He had noticed that females liked people to think they were soft, even when they weren't. It was a bunch of bizarre backward thinking to Gaved, but he had definitely noticed it.
"Do you want to go on a walk with me, some time?" He took Stygg out sometimes, but he and Dalla generally tried to avoid one another. Maybe that had been a mistake. Maybe ... maybe he could catch her a thrall or something, and impress her. That sounded like fun. Gaved flexed his claws.

She had to admit, she wasn't entirely sure she wanted to be treated as a fragile and meek little thing. She wasn't, and she never had been. She'd been in love with Gunne. Gunne, a beloved Warlord who had been snatched from his pride far too soon. He'd been fierce and fearsome, and he had never backed down from a challenge. It had been what had drawn her to the male, despite the fact that he'd been involved with her sister. There were times that Gaved reminded her of that great lion, and it was not when he was being tender and gentle with her. "I would like that," Dalla admitted softly. It would be nice to have some privacy. Some time away from the den, away from Stygg, away from things that might otherwise distract Gaved from her. She was a strong, feisty lioness. She was Stormborn, and she deserved a mate equal to her in every way. Dalla knew that Gaved could be that lion. She only needed to really give him a chance, perhaps.

Now that he had a course of action, Gaved was pleased. Maybe he could try this wooing business on Dalla. He had never wanted to, but there were glimmers of intriguing ferocity in the lioness. She was infuriating, yes, but she was also captivating. No other lioness could get under his skin as quickly as Dalla could. Maybe there was something in that. "Good," Gaved said briskly. "I'll take you out tomorrow night." That would give him some time to arrange things. Gaved had learned that asking lionesses where they wanted to go lead to endless rounds of 'I don't know, what do you want to do?' that made him want to tear his mane out. He would think up something perfect for Dalla. Gaved leaned forward and gave Dalla a brief nuzzle, pressing his nose against her cheek. Was it affectionate or just going through the motions? He was surprised to find that yes, it was affectionate. He followed it with a gentle, playful n** to her ear.

Dalla actually felt as if they'd accomplished something with this talk. Gaved was a handsome lion from a respectable family, and when she really thought about it, she was blessed by the Gods to have been paired with him. She had never, ever been infuriated by another lion the way she could be by Gaved. The levels of madness he could drive her to were insurmountable at times, but... This was nice. This felt normal. This felt like the marriage she'd always wanted, and if she were being completely honest with herself, his marriage to Stygg did not bother her at all. Stygg was a sweet lioness, an attentive mother, and a respectable den-mate. The n** to her ear caused her to giggle abruptly, and Dalla sent Gaved a coy look from beneath her lashes. "I would like that, husband," she murmured playfully, "but perhaps we can spend some time... together... now, as well?"
