This is a question near and dear to my heart because I've gone all my years through the public school system. It worked very well for me because I knew how to play it. But now my perspective has to shift because I'm going into the field of teaching, and I have to reevaluate what the school system is all about, looking at not just the kids who do well, but the ones who fall through the cracks.

So help me out guys, what's wrong with the systems we have?
If you were a teacher, how would you improve things?
Should school be mandatory?
Are standardized tests a good thing, or do you think they don't accurately represent your intelligence and ability to learn?
Are there some things that just can't be tested?

not everyone knows how to play it, some parents arent knowledgable enough to help their kids take advantage of the system. then we get arrogant or egotistical or lazy teachers. at least its free lol.

Obviously not everyone knows how to play it, that's why I'm wondering if people know of ways that would make it less of a game, so to speak.

And there is so much blame put on the teachers, but honestly bad teachers tend to be a pretty small percentage out there.
Besides, if the solution were to just hire better teachers, what's stopping us?

Teachers with ambitions, wouldnt want to work in public schooling i think. They would try teaching somewhere with repute, and income lol.

Well then isn't this an issue of not paying teachers enough such that it pushes people who would do well out of the job market?

It's not the issue of school being mandatory but being the issue of how much homework they're giving the students and preparing the kids more for standardized tests and not for the life that will be approaching them in x amount of years.

All a teacher can do is suggest things to their local Teacher's Union and see if they can try and change the rules and curriculum or even talk to their curriculum team leader about it. But it's not that's going to help.

In places around Europe they succeed with a higher notice in science and math, higher test scores and almost no homework. They're doing things differently than what we're doing and that's a problem. It's an even bigger problem that kids and even teens aren't as interested in math and science like they were in the 50's.

As far as standardized tests and someone who has been looked at as being on the...modified spectrum, standardized tests don't represent your intelligence and can actually hinder people from showing their intelligence. When I was in middle school I was actually barred from taking Spanish I in the 6th grade because I took a modified English TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) and the score wasn't to their likely.

So i don't have much knowledge on this subject because well.. I went to public school and i don't have kids or want to be a teacher so i never evaluated it that way but i can however go by the experiences i have seen

Myself - I went to public school and had a school with a very good curriculum .. yet a school down the road wasn't *** My school read of Mice of Men in 9th grade and the other didn't mandate it until 12th

My cousin - she went to private school up until 8th grade and then the school ended and she had to go to to either another private school or go to high school and since she wanted to play on the high school sports teams she went back to public school but she is doing very well for herself - (that said i have other cousins who did well for themselves and only went to public school)

My friend was home schooled - THIS is based solely on the person providing the curriculum. He was already going for his masters by the time he was 20 or 21 HOWEVER! he had little to no social skills as he didn't have the normal interaction with other people growing up with kids in the school system.

I think the amount of homework and the teaching methods of the teachers should always be changing. I learned more from the teachers who made education fun / made us read and then watched movies.. or who had us learn about a country and then cook food (extra credit if we did so) .. the schools want kids to be well rounded .. i think everyone should have to have electives in music and sports (could be phys ed) and learn a foreign language (and i think you should start earlier than what we are now) .. AND they should offer real world courses (even accounting 101 because you can learn debits/credits and how to balance a check book) and home ec (learn to cook and sew etc) ... my high school offered many electives from a planetarium (astronomy) to drama to

and btw i am just lazy which is why i don't bother being all "proper" with my capitals lol rofl
